ESPN down grades all 5 Iowa recruits

having a top 20 class would sound better to recruits then a top 30 class. if a recruit is 50 50 between us and someone else it could make the difference. I'm pretty sure that's all herby is trying to say then everyone rips on him and it becomes stupid. I have even seen Jon say on here that recruiting services can be bias towards schools. I'm surprised people are arguing this that much i thought it was common knowledge
Im sure the convo goes like this? Recruit- Hey Coach Fran, I really like the campus and also heard you guys had a Top 20 class back in 2012. Fran- Well actually it was Top 30, but was an impressive class regardless. Recruit- Top 30? Im out, peace.

actually it would be more like fran trying to sell whatever class he has then it would be up to the recruit to decide if he likes what he is selling. obviously there isn't a whole lot of difference between a top 20 and a top 30, but when a recruit is on the fence small things can be the difference. if you argue this you're doing it just to argue

Personally, I wouldn't want any basketball players who are stupid enough to make an important decision based on slight differences in inconsequential, subjective data from the past.

little things can subconsciously make one place sound better then another. that is no reason to not want a good player to come here

No, I said being an idiot is a reason not to want a good player to come here. A person using that criteria, consciously or not, to make a major decision, is an idiot in my book.

Exactly. If a recruit is trying to decide between Iowa and Purdue and he's looking at who is going to be in place around him as a deciding factor, don't you think he would be leaning towards Purdue if they are sitting there with 3 4-star and 1 3-star recruit over Iowa with 1 4-star, 2 3-stars and a 2 star guy? To us as fans, we may feel stars mean jack squat but that may not be the case with a potential recruit. Perception is key.

just because someone has different opinions on what's important doesn't mean he's an idiot. its not like we dropped enough to make a big difference but from what I have been reading it sounds like some of our recruits have been killing it. imagine if they would have been upgraded we might have a top 15 class.

No, that's the exact opposite. Fans are the only ones who care about stars. Recruiting services are a big business, and they are not popular because "[fans] feel stars mean jack squat". They do not exist so players can compare themselves to one another.

The players know the guys who can play. The recruits contact one another and watch the guys they are going to play with. Unlike fans, who only know recruits as a youtube video and a page on Rivals with his vitals, the players know each other a bit more.

when someone has to make a decision between 2 things that are equal it usually comes down to something pety to make the decision. if someone then said you're an idiot for chosing something based on something that pety it wouldn't be fair because they don't understand how equal everything else was in your mind and how torn between the 2 you were

No, it would be: Hey coach I hear you have a top 20 recruiting class! Fran: That is correct, It is a top 20 rated recruiting class.

Says who? Do you honestly think players pay zero attention to ratings? I'm not saying they are the end all be all but I'm saying they can be a factor in a players decision. I highly doubt a recruit will get to see every incoming player on every school they are considering play in person before they make their decision. They may have to base their opinion on these players based on their tape and ratings.

I would hope that a kid would consider many other factors before they made their decision but I'm sure the talent surrounding them is certainly something to look at.

yea that's pretty bad after reading that back. I think I've probably spent to much time trying to convince people that recruiting services are bias and recruiting ranks matter to high school kids. serious question tho, what's with the pics? how do you even find them?

When it comes down to it Winning is what really matters.....Win and they will come!

Absolutely. However, this is an extremely important class for Fran to prove to the national pundits that he can recruit with the big boys. I don't think downgrading the class is going to hurt his perception but it certainly doesn't help.

Regardless of what they are ranked though, I think he will win a lot of games with these kids.

this is what I'm thinking. people get so caught up in arguing they forget to realize that high school kids think different then they do

Wow. Lots of intelligence in this thread. Do you think recruits go off recruiting services or playing against other players, or accounts of there friends playing against them. There is a whole lot of dumb goin on. Herb might have a slight point on why our class was downgraded but In NO WAY will this affect Fran or future recruits.
