Eickholt Rivals reports Fran says he is not movinh on

What is he supposed to say right now while the season is still going?

The guy is going to get whatever his contract says, so not sure what negotiations there will be. Whether he wants to stay or not, its up to Beth. If she sees what most of us see, what Beth will say is that you deserve to go out on your terms, so please retire/resign and we will throw you a party and wish you well. Don't force me to fire you.

Yep, if Fran isn't coaching at Iowa next year, the only real discussion next week will be Goetz saying we'd like to call it a retirement and have an amicable final press conference together. And Fran responding with either a screw you, here's the keys to my office and my university phone....or ok, sounds good, can I pick the food for the party? Because he's getting all his money either way.

Fran is a cerebral guy. He understands that this is a results oriented business and the results the last few seasons on and off the court are middling, at best. I cannot imagine he would be shocked if Beth pulled him into the office for this discussion. That said, he is a hot head and to my knowledge he has never been fired (only left for better gigs). Whether it is retirement or just your career ending due to age, it can be a hard thing for some folks to process. If the marriage is ending, I just hope both sides are incredibly classy.

Right, he wants his money and IMO, he should get it. Why willingly walk away from millions. That's smart business. As far as Beth is concerned, I don't think there's much to debate. If she brings him back, Iowa basketball will go further in the red.

Agree it’s smart business but I’m not really worried if he didn’t get all that he wanted. He’s probably made Somewhere between 40 and 50 million in his 15 years at Iowa. I imagine his retirement looks pretty good

If Fran's time is ending with Iowa, it was a very successful combination both ways. Fran took the program out of the dumpster and made it respectable for an extended period of time, and he was paid reasonably well for the good work that he did. All good things must come to an end, and most of the time in the coaching world they do not end on a good note.

Yeah, and it's not like Fran was paid anywhere near the top of the conference. The Fran era at Iowa was mutually beneficial, it's just run its course.

Still don’t know if the 4 million dollar buyout drops after April 1st. If he plays the cat and mouse game to get every last dollar…I’m not going to shit on him for doing it.

What's the cat and mouse game for him? He has a contract and will continue coaching until told otherwise.

I just look at it as he's still coach till he isn't. He's under no obligation to plan ahead now to retire/walk away. His contract goes through 28. The ball is in Beths court. That's what he's just acknowledging by saying what he did. Surely the hell Fran isn't oblivious to the 'noise' and overall situation.

He either doesn't want to leave or he's cool with it. Either way he's gonna get what he's got owed to him. How it goes down is just up to Beth. We are on her timeline. What'd fascinate me is if say the decision has been made for awhile like many of us think and what kind of back channeling has been done on her end reaching out to others. That'd be a tricky thing to do cause you wouldn't want that getting out. Not till you've let Fran go anyway. That part of it all just interests me.

She seems to be pretty by the book so maybe she hasn't done any of that.

If they've done a good job at keeping that all quiet we'd never know but I'd like to think that since an inhouse hire isn't gonna happen that she's been kicking the tires on who else out there has interest. I know some have all their eggs in the DeVries basket but I'm just not so certain of that.
