Don't look now, Top 25

Steve Alford has his UNM Lobos at 19-3, and fresh off a win last night against #10 BYU.

We, at Iowa, three years later, are getting excited on this message board because a team "played Ohio State tough....but still lost"

Alford knew what he was doing, and what he was dealing with in the Iowa fans.

He will parlay that into a bigger and better job.

You have to give him credit at some point.

To hell with alfords credit. That team of hawkeyes played harder last nite than any of alfords teams ever did. Lick's on the right track. Who cares about Alford.

Whether it is a 30 point loss, or a 1 point loss.........it's still a loss.

And, since 2006, we have seen way too many of them.

Alfords team will make the NCAA as an 11 seed and get blown out. The guy is not a good coach, the only reason his team is doing so well is because he played a weak non-conf schedule and he is also playing in the MWC! NEWFLASH: The mountain west got beat by the MVC in their challenge this year. MWC is horrible and a joke. BYU never should of been rated 10. Sorry alford will stay at New Mexico forever, which is fine by me, the guy is a terrible coach and even more of an @sshole than anyone I have ever met. I wonder if he is still picking up college chicks at New Mexico?

I can give him credit, he is a helluva mid major coach, but once he "parlays" this into a bigger and better job he won't do so well. He had success at Missouri St as well.

I'm sick and tired of us playing like a bunch of talented freshman and sophomores. Oh wait... I guess we are a bunch of talented freshman and sophpmores. Just hold your water, be patient, things will work out, Oh yea f#&k Alford

I couldnt disagree more with this. I didnt like Alford but the one thing i always gave him credit for was that his teams played extremely hard every single night. Especially when Horner, Brunner and Haluska were there. Those teams worked their tails off on the defensive end

With that being said the OP is trolling with this thread. who cares if UNM won last night? good for them

You said it. At least they will make it. We have no chance.

I wish the roles were reversed. But, they aren't.

And I couldn't disagree more with this. Alford's teams played to the level of their competition. They would play well against top teams, and then turn around and lay an egg against someone they had no business losing to.

You could see the difference in the team when they were playing a highly rated opponent. Even in the year they won 25 games - they were able to beat teams like Illinois and Michigan St. and Kentucky in the non-conference, and then they turned around and lost to Minnesota and NW, who were both cellar dwellers that year. Explain that one.

Against NW State, build a 17 lead in the first half, then let up and blow it. Repeat in the 2nd half. And don't tell me the 2001-02 team (year 3 with Recker/Evans) game maximum effort every game.

Craig Neal's Lobo's are racking up the win that is for sure. But how fun is it to have to win 20+ games a year and have to win your conference tourny to get into the dance and be one and done? The only thing different about SA is that he is doing something different with his hair. He seems to think his forehead is big and isn't combing his hair up but has some bangs going on. The real test for SA is when Neal leaves and he is all on his own. I don't miss the guy at all, mid major coach at a mid major school.

I don't care how he's doing, I'm glad he's not coaching here.

Agree.

Also, Alford is a fantastic mid-major coach. He really flourishes at that level. He even took some time at a Big Ten school for some on the job training before heading back down to the mid-major level.

Yes, congrats to Steve. Congrats on excelling at yet another mid-major school. The only correlation that Alford has with Iowa is the hole he put the program in before he left. Other than that, I don't care to discuss it. But now since it was brought up, I'm going to have to watch the boxscores to post when they lose... because that's only fair, right?

This is true - the 2nd half of that season was a complete debacle and youre right that they didnt play hard all the time. other than that tho i always thought his teams played hard.

Your point about losing to Minn and NW really doesnt equate to playing hard. I remember the road game at MN vividly and iowa played hard that game. They just made a lot of mistakes and missed a ton of shots. That was a tough game to lose but it wasnt from a lack of effort. Believe it or not you can play hard and still play like crap

So its fair to say you arent a Steve Alford fan spank? :)

A weak non-conference schedule that includes wins over Cal, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Creighton? A Cal team that was ranked in the top 25 at the time and beat ISU by 20?

The Lobos should be in the tournament without winning their conference tournament. The MWC is not the world's greatest conference but let's stop acting like they cannot compete with the major conferences...there just isn't that much difference between "mid-majors" and power conferences in basketball anymore. It only takes a few good players to be good at basketball and he can pull some kids out of Texas and Southern California and should be given credit for his successes. If his NM team was in the Big Ten they'd be right up there with tOSU, Mich St and Purdue...they might finish 4th or 5th but they are certainly a tournament team and he is a good coach.

Let's not forget that he was considered a tournament coach in his first few years at Iowa...after his success at SWMS and his success in the Big 10 Tournament during his tenure at Iowa.
