The reason teams like MTSU played a tough non con is to help their bottom line and athletic dept. I doubt they did thinking how it would help them get in the NCAA.
This thread has gotten really dumb as have many on this board lately....
The goal of the NCAA is not to get the best 68 teams in the tournament. If it was you would not allow any of the crappy small conference tournament winnners in the tournament. People are being so dumb around here they can't even grasp this common sense fact from the start. If you want to start your argument by saying the NCAA tournamet is complete garbage I can agree with you. Hell I would only let like 12 -20 teams in and play like a 3-5 game series or something like that if I was interested in crowing the truly best team in the country.
On to people being dumb and complaining about MTSU. Well I am sure they would gladly switch spots with Iowa and play in the Big 10 so they actually played in a good conference and had a good SOS. How in the heck do you expect any of these small conference teams to have a good SOS? They are not going to because the teams in their conference are bad. Their only shot at having any sort of OK SOS is to schedule really hard in the non conference. How may wins do you expect them to get on the road in preseason playing at good teams home court. They play in bad conference so they don't get a shot a recruiting as good players as power conference teams as well. I mean who the heck did Iowa beat on a neutral/away court that was a really solid team? Don't say UNI or Western Kentucky becasue they are OK but nothing special.
This whole argument is just dumb honestly.
Everyone knows MTSU is not as good as Iowa. The goal is not to get the best teams in.
I don't give a damn about whether or not Iowa is actually better. The same goes for the other teams that got left out. But I fail to see how anyone with a brain stem can look at MTSU's resume and be more impressed by theirs than any of the first six teams left out. The committee doesn't try to put the best TEAMS in, but they do try to put the best RESUMES in. They stated their case as to why they felt MTSU had a better resume, and IMO that case was pretty ******* weak. They won a bunch of games against crap teams, and only beat one out of the four top 100 teams they played.
Don't give me "Iowa didn't beat any worldbeaters". MTSU has ONE ******* TOP 100 WIN. Iowa has 6. Those other teams had more than one each. Their resume sucked, outside of a broken RPI system. Who did MTSU beat on a road/neutral court that was decent? Their best road win was #102 UCF. Iowa best road/neutral win? #80 UNI. All but two of MTSU's road/neutral wins came against teams ranked outside the top 150.
I honestly wouldn't have cared if a team like Kentucky, Maryland, etc., had gotten in over Iowa. I have a problem with a team like MTSU getting in over several teams that were FAR more deserving.
The committee does. Because Iowa didn't beat any worldbeaters in conference play, so they needed to make up for it with a few resume wins over good teams outside the conference. They couldn't do that though because there weren't enough opportunities to beat anyone of circumstance in their OOC schedule, except maybe Iowa State, therefore they were skipped over for the NCAA's.
