There is a reason they do it this time of year. I actually had a DirecTV rep call me on my cell at work today trying to get me to come back. Explains why.

Man, you'd think someone at the cable companies would wise up and say "hey guys, can we set the termination date on this contract as, oh I don't know, say April 1 rather than September 10?" That way you could let Disney ride a quarter without a giant customer and you'd actually have some negotiating leverage. I wonder if they do that and then Disney will only agree to short term extensions that happen to coincide with the start of college football because they know the bevy of pissed off Southerners and Midwesterners will come to their defense in the dispute.
I know, I know. I just can't.

If you remove yourself from the DirecTV hate for a second...this is actually a really bad thing for bars and restaurants across the state of Iowa. DirecTV is the go-to option for a lot of these places (BWW, etc) and they could potentially be without the biggest CyHawk game ever?
I realize Directv/disney don't give two shits about the state of Iowa, but its definitely in their best interest to get a deal done asap
That being said....I do sorta love the idea of ESPN being in Ames while their own channel is blacked out. There's something very Ames about that.

Although people would miss ESPN's Game Day, the game itself is on FS1, which is still on DirecTV.

Yeah but a lot of the "gameday excitement" seems to be the fact that ESPN is in town.

Direct TV needs to stop spending money on advertising and figure out their product and contracts.
I liked the idea of trying them 1 year ago since before then I never had a house but damn has it been full of regret.
I don't see why I should have to pay a cancellation fee if the product changes significantly like its about to.

That is why you have to be careful about those long term contracts. They tried to pitch me on DirectTV and the deal is horrible. You have to commit to 2 years, they won't promise what channels you will get AND they wouldn't promise me what the year 2 price would be. Year 1 looked great, though!
Not sure how this will play out, but if AT&T doesn't get a deal here I think they're going to have a helluva legal battle on their hands if they don't let people cancel contracts. ESPN is the second most daily viewed channel (behind Fox News) and on days of big games, their ratings dwarf everything else on cable. DirectTV knows that the primary purpose behind most of its customers buying certain packages is sports programming and they advertise the presence of ESPN. If they don't have ESPN they are setting themselves up for a frustration of purpose defense by a lot of angry customers and potentially unfair trade practice claims by state governments. It would be absolutely foolish for them to attempt to hold people to those termination fees if they lose ESPN for any appreciable period because this is precisely the type of lawsuit that would be ripe for class certification. I'll bet there are hundreds of lawyers who already have filings drafted and ready for delivery on Monday morning.
A) there's plenty more streaming sites
B) I doubt most of the general viewership has knowledge of, or is willing to use, such sites.
If you pay by credit card then cancel and tell your card company to deny any payments to Directv with your valid reason.
It's kind of like sitting down to take a massive dump in a public restroom and looking over and realizing there is no toilet paper.
