Deuce Hogan

I personally know people who have had that mentality, coming in as a freshman and "if I'm not starting I'm out". It never works out the best.
I think from everything he has said he loves competition and that is exactly what winning the starting job is.
If he redshirts which is guess would be highly likely, he could have potentially two years to play. I still don’t know if the kid would be content with that. He doesn’t seem to be that kind of personality from everything I’ve read.

If he redshirts, he could potentially be playing his second year here. Just saying.
Also 2 years is plenty of time to show what you've got. We have had guys at other positions start one year and go pro.

Everything so true. When you put Petras in with a 3 score lead late in a game let him throw the ball instead of handing off 3 times and then punting. Safe passes into single coverage where the dback is off the receiver. Let him get a feel for rolling out, pocket passing, with pressure on him throw it way out of bounds. No INTs so it is a pressure situation.
This makes sense but Kirk's QB development plan has been in place for 20 years and has made Iowa above average. Why risk that for greatness, or a win or two over Wisconsin? I am hoping Hunter Dekkers at Iowa State doesn't perform like the QB Iowa has always needed to take a champions leap!

Do you think Purdy signed with the Clowns expecting to start from day one or even his first year? Deuce is planning on a red shirt year and then competing to start. If he's good enough, he will start, regardless of what some of you yahoos think is Ferentz's loyalty to starters. If he can't beat out Petras after his red shirt year he'll have two more years to start, assuming Padilla or someone else doesn't win the job.

Yeah Deuce has mentioned how he talked with Kirby Smart from Georgia. Smart told him he could come in and compete for the starting job as a true fresh, and Deuce told him that he wants to redshirt, so he can develop himself and learn the playbook without losing a year of eligibility.

I think the bigger question is whether he's willing to settle for playing 2 years, or whether he's dead set on playing 4.

I 100% understand that there's a competition and that Hogan is banking on his abilities to win out. He's young and whether we want to admit it or not he's naive to the way Kirk works.

It's not debateable that Kirk is leaning Petras and he tends to be a "ride or die" coach when it comes to QBs. This is totally my opinion but I feel there's a way lower than 50% chance that Hogan takes Petras over. Kirk likes stability and we know he's not a guy who's going to make a change unless the house is burning down.

So should that scenario play out, Hogan would have to make a decision to ride pine for 3 years and I just don't see him as that type.

Do all of you remember Tom Poholsky, spelling???, who filled who started a couple of times as a 2nd stringer and did well under a bit of a leash by Fry but won a big game on the road at MSU etc. The next year as the starter he couldnt hit the broad side of a barn in the very first game and was replaced and never played again I believe.

Dont count your chickens but I hope Petras is lights out for 3 years as his tape has shown he can be.
Ironically, in college I was dating his ex girlfriend from high school.

It was kind of a strange occurrence. I had no idea who he was, but when he started that game for Iowa completely out of the blue - and I saw his high school listed on the screen- I immediately called my girlfriend who said she went out with him for awhile.

CJ had injuries and should have sat more.

he had injuries sure, but he didn’t miss games. I doubt any of his injuries would have effected the games ultimate outcome. At times it limited the offense possibly. However bringing Stanley in as a freshman probably wouldn’t have really resulted in more production.

I think this describes a lot of Iowa recruits. They believe their talent will win out no matter what and they don't actually pay attention to who they are playing for.

Playing for Kirk is simple:

Learn the playbook & know your assignments
When you're on the field, execute your assignment
Do nothing to bring attention to yourself

If you do those 3 things, 5 star or 1/2 star, you'll get a shot at playing.

If you don't do those 3 things, 5 star or 1/2 star, you'll sit.

The problem for Deuce is that Kirk only wants to play 1 QB so even if Deuce is worthy of some snaps, he may not get a chance to show it on the field.

Iowa's luck may run out on not having serious injuries to its QBs. Look what happened to Northwestern this past fall. Alabama is another example.

You gotta have 2 good ones. Deuce will be ONE PLAY from starting this fall, if he is as good as advertised.

If there's no one ahead of you.

That's the whole question of the thread. Will he be ok riding the pine for the next three years if it comes to that?

Don't forget a fumble or interception, especially when trying to making something happen.

You left out having dad intervene and dont have an upper classman starting ahead of you.

Also dont be a dual threat unless straight up middle.

Ha.... My kid was cleared way to early afrer a concussion and with a tibia stress fracture.

Naive sucker you are. Dude couldnt hardley move.

If I remember in CJ's case he was in fact injured but it was one of those injuries that wasn't going to get worse by him playing but it wasn't going to get better without surgery. It was basically how much pain could he play through.

I think for sure there were times he should have sat just to get some rest. Just living with pain is a big dealing it takes a toll on you physically and mentally which I think was evident in quite a few games.
