Deuce Hogan

Got to give Hayden credit for doing that right.

Scotty had his eyes on an upgrade. This guy actually wasn't the first choice, though. A former player turned them down.

Pending background check? Do they want to make sure he has felonies on his record so he fits in?

If Hogan doesn't win it this year I don't think you're ever going to see him on that field.

And then the Oliver Martin whack jobs are going to come out of the woodwork and say how we would have won three natties if KF had just gave Doose a shot.

Going to be tough for Deuce to win the job without coming in for the spring. Essentially, he would need to win the job with only fall camp. I am not sure any QB has done that under this head coach.

Yeah and if Petras does well early on it's over. It'll be impossible for him to even get a long look and a fair shot. Only so many reps to be had and unless your taking them with the 1st team... Your swimming upstream. Injuries are always the X factor too. We have been really fortunate in that regard with QBs. Stanley was never really hurt during his tenure. Can that luck continue and to what extent?

I have no issue with Hogan at all, I just think there's about a 10% chance he ever sees the field at Iowa. He was born in the wrong year to no fault of his own. Kirk is already leaning Petras, Petras is a known quantity, and Hogan doesn't strike me as a kid who wants to ride the pine for 3 years and play one. He strikes me as someone who thinks he has a greater than 50% chance of being "the guy" when he gets here, but has a rude awakening coming. He's not a journeyman type who's going to grind it out until he's a senior.

Again, I have no beef with the kid at all, but I don't think it's gonna go the way he wants it to.

Timing is everything. I agree it'll be a matter of how long will he roll the dice to stick it out for? 2 yrs is my over under. I find the odds of him waiting 3 yrs to start 1 to be slim and none.

If Petras struggles and Deuce blows the staff away, it might be sooner than people think that he sees the field. Maybe Deuce is really good, maybe he's not all that, but let's let the staff see him before we declare he's not going to play much.

Come to think of it, let's see how Spencer does when the bullets are flying as well.

If Petras is the obvious top guy, he may be Iowa's QB for the next three seasons. That would put Deuce Hogan in the position of red-shirting one season and then sitting on the bench for another two seasons before he can even get on the field. That is a long time to wait. Is he going to want to do that?

Iowa has been extremely fortunate to have 3 straight starters who somehow avoided injuries in CJB, rudock and nate. However that isn’t the norm and regression to the mean is coming. I have to think petras will get injured at some point. We are a bit calloused as Iowa fans, because of extreme QB durability. The backup QB is just one snap away from starting. Look at Tua, Felipe franks etc

CJ had injuries and should have sat more.

I think I've seen somewhere that Deuce has indicated he intends to redshirt.

Yes, and he'd still be sitting 2 years behind Petras (hypothetically). The way KFz has talked about Petras, it would be surprising to see him lose the starting job. He'd have to really crash and burn. Too bad Deuce isn't a year younger.

So in practice going against a top 10 defense, you don't think PP and the guys in there fighting to maintain and gain position are not trying to get to the QB or intercept passes. K. what is different is that there are 60k to 70k screaming people. The old stage fright deal. That's the difference and you have varying forms of D, but to think the Iowa D in practice is not applying pressure is ridiculous. Sure he isn't gonna get hit,but that internal clock is a ticking and it all goes into his review for the spot.

Gonna be hard to do when he isn't coming til august camp basically. A kid in there 2 years versus 5 weeks or so. Hogan will be 3rd string at very best going into opening game.

Everything so true. When you put Petras in with a 3 score lead late in a game let him throw the ball instead of handing off 3 times and then punting. Safe passes into single coverage where the dback is off the receiver. Let him get a feel for rolling out, pocket passing, with pressure on him throw it way out of bounds. No INTs so it is a pressure situation.

Do all of you remember Tom Poholsky, spelling???, who filled who started a couple of times as a 2nd stringer and did well under a bit of a leash by Fry but won a big game on the road at MSU etc. The next year as the starter he couldnt hit the broad side of a barn in the very first game and was replaced and never played again I believe.

Dont count your chickens but I hope Petras is lights out for 3 years as his tape has shown he can be.

There's no reason to not redshirt. Unless you are a absolute phenom, or the other QBs all tear their ACLs, you aren't going to play QB at Iowa as a freshman.
This is going to be a big problem as recruiting becomes more and more important. By saying "you aren't going to play QB at Iowa as a freshman", you're excluding the top QBs in the country from even thinking about listening to a recruiting pitch from you.

I personally know people who have had that mentality, coming in as a freshman and "if I'm not starting I'm out". It never works out the best.
I think from everything he has said he loves competition and that is exactly what winning the starting job is.
