Desmond King Not a Captain this Week

The team votes on the captains and King a defensive player maybe wasnt so much replaced by L Daniels an offensive player. Maybe L Daniels was voted an offensive captain.

Hmmm...maybe Desmond King is going to play on offense this week...so they couldn't make him a defensive captain. That's what I'm going with.

The whole team votes on year-end captains. The week to week captains are voted on by the leadership group.

I don't think it was an offensive-defensive consideration. Iowa now has three offensive captains - CJB, Vandy, LeShun - and one on defense - Jewell.

Do you think we'll ever hear the real story on why he's no longer a captain?

Never understood why captains are voted on. Coaches know who the leaders are and who understands the game more than others.

I'm guessing it's the players respecting Shun... not much more

You don't disrespect the returning Thorpe Award Winner to let LeShun know he has been doing great. And you do it after that showing by the team? It isn't like LeShun rushed for 250 yds to merit the promotion. Now, we don't know what he is doing behind the scenes that could warrant it but either way, it is a slap to the face of King.

Who knows, maybe King suggested this. He may have thought he didn't do enough for his team last week. That wouldn't surprise me.

This is the worry with a 1st round pick returning. Iowa is a bad team this year so why risk injury to finish 3rd in the West?

Not trying to nitpick, but isn't that a bit of a bold statement to make 3 games into the season. Not sure we've seen enough after 3 games to say this is a bad team. I think we've seen enough to say its not a NC contender, but I think your speculating a bit to make that statement this early in the year.

Every game is important, but this one feels a little extra.

Rutgers is a bad team. I don't care that it's on the road, Iowa has to rebound and win.....and win big.

Tho in the past we've rebounded only to drop right back down to earth the next week. Didn't we crush NW, think all is right in the world of Iowa football, and then get stomped by MN the next week? Think it was 2014

When unrest is high, KF tends to turn things loose for the next game. HN is then happy, and KF goes right back into the conservative mode.

I'd like to think this game will tell us a lot about this team and year, but I really have no clue based on the past

Have you ever participated in competitive team sports?

I've coached at the high school level. I always choose captains based on how hard they work, maturity, leadership and so on. It's also changeable during the year. Doesn't have to be a starter, but is helpful. Using a different sport, if my point guard or center midfielder isn't such a leader, they aren't playing those positions. Not all captains need be those positions. With baseball it's the catcher position that must be a leader and unselfish. They have to see the field. Popularity doesn't matter to me. It's their popularity with me. I've been quite successful with doing that. I want a kid that will get in someone's face, including mine and the official if need be (and done correctly) and is respectable on and off the field. Popularity contests don't always do that. I rarely have issues with motivation. My teams typically overachieve, though coaching a lot of talent is really fun. I want a kid who is willing to take them self out if it is better for the team. I've had a captain say he couldn't keep up with the speed and suggested another player.
