Defense against Northwestern

Just for the record, I thought Iowa did a masterful job last night of extending the defense to keep Northwestern from getting into any sort of rhythm on points from beyond the arc. It really disrupted the Wildcats; only a handful of their points came on desperation shots with the time expiring and they were lucky to get them to go down. Also felt Iowa's tight perimeter D took away many of NU's passes to an inside cutter. The few times they managed to get it inside, Woody, White and Basabe were able to recover to challenge the shot or grab the rebound.

True, but Iowa won the game and won it easily. First time Iowa has won there since 2008. Fran now has as many wins at Northwestern as the previous 2 coaches.

It also helps that Northwestern is one of the worst teams in the Power 6 conferences.

Wow I knew NW was bad but I did not know they were that bad. Their only chance at keeping the game close was making 3 point shots. They had no one who could dribble drive consistently against the Iowa defenders.

It is nice to see Iowa killing the teams they are better than this year. The only game where Iowa struggled against a team they were athletically superior to was GW.

That is the first step in getting back to being a relevant team.

Sobolewski is the new Shurna. I hate that guy. He is always falling down on his shots even if he doesn't get touched to make it look like a foul.

Wildcats are not good...

without Crawford and Cobb. But Iowa still did a good job of playing with defensive intensity and for the entire defensive possession, even when Hawks had trouble scoring in the first half.

The foul call on Woodbury on Sobolewski in the second half was perhaps the most ridiculous call I've seen all year. Sobo falls down as he's shooting a layup, Woodbury blocks it cleanly, then falls on the guy laying on the ground, and gets called for a foul.

Northwestern is in a tough spot with their roster. They are so slow without Crawford and Cobb that teams can play them tightly on the perimeter with no fear of the guy with the ball. Even when they do back-cut successfully, defense has time to recover and block the layup, as Iowa did several times.

Carmody sounded as frustrated after the game as I've ever heard him. I think he knows he's in for a long year. At least he won't have to keep answering the question about if this is the year they will finally make the NCAA's. Clue: They won't.

I liked seeing that Iowa was defending the whole possession and keeping up for the whole game. My concern is what we'll see against Bucky.

Sometimes this team starts to lose focus and intensity on D when they're getting beaten on possessions -- understandable, but unforgiveable. It's easy to maintain the intensity when facing the Mildcats. If we see White and Marble (the most glaring examples) starting to dog it against the Badgers, there hasn't been any progress.

We'd better take care of Wisconsin at home, after that 4 of our next 5 games are at OSU, Purdue, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. What a meat grinder.

I dont think the Hawks will have any problem maintaining intenstiy Saturday night. Carver will be rocking.

And I think the opposite is true. I think it would be hard to maintain intensity if the team the Hawks were playing had no pulse.

I do not blame him, I am sure he seen this game as one they could win.

If you're dominating a team in every way, it can be tough to keep that intensity. But it's generally a lot easier to keep it up if things are going well for you, whether you're in a blowout or a nailbiter.

I think we are overlooking Nebraska. They played very well at Michigan and MSU. It was a 5/6 point game in the last minutes.....

They have a Beast center who is playing because the starting center is injured. He was pushing Nix and Payne around. Looks like a Pro Football Lineman.....

One game at a time......
