Decorum

I never understood the attitude that a high post count somehow correlates to knowledge.. I post here all the time but don't consider myself to be a football/hoops guru.. Just an Iowa sports fan who knows "something" about sports, but I'll readily admit there are those who know far more about X's and O's, etc. than I do.

I post because I'm passionate, not because I feel the need to hear myself talk (or see myself type) and prove how smart I am or somehow dominate the forum and be one of the good ole boys club.

Some people have lives and/or don't work in front of a PC where they can post all day while at the office. It doesn't mean they're clueless.

Yes, there are trolls, but it's pretty easy to spot those.

Well said...

And I am not going to take a picture of my tat in front of a newspaper. Who reads papers anymore.

If you are going to create an account and then immediately start a new thread slamming the Hawks, you are going to get attacked. If that person isn't actually a troll (which is the case 90% of the time), then they are in very poor taste. It's not necessarily that people don't want to hear different opinions, people slam the Hawks all the time on here, just try and go about it in a respectful manner.

Let's say I was an ISU fan and I was ticked off at the fact that we just got pounded by Kansas. I'm not going to go register at CF, start a new thread and immediately tear the team down. Nobody knows who I am, they will assume I'm a troll and destroy me. Instead, I would post in one of the dozens of threads already discussing their shortcomings. It's a pretty simple concept in my opinion.

True. A lot of it is probably also not necessarily what you say, but how you say it.

Noobies can help themselves in a way as well. Don't come on too strong. Tread lightly at first & offer insight. Also, don't start by starting 15 threads at one time, usually starting a thread on every thought that goes thru their head. ;)

Remember people, we were all new once to! :D

Honestly, if you weren't a big enough Hawk fan to join in October or November of 2009 as soon as word got out JD started his own board, I don't care what your opinion is. There are a few folks who joined after that who are okay, but I am fairly prejudiced against folks who didn't join relatively early (though I still try to be welcoming).

I am new, honest mistake. I guess I should have just commented on someone elses post. Regardless, your comment about people starting after 2009 is funny to me. I tend to not like message boards and I am seeing why now. I never started in 2009 because I didn't have anything to complain about in 2009. I was still ok with KF at the time.

Anyways... I am taking everything with a grain of salt now, and just to poke fun, I have a hard time trusting anyone with the handle okeefe4prez. Actually, in 2010 or 11 I was probably only thinking about getting rid of okeefe and thinking it was him at fault, not KF.

What do you say about the guys who didn't have any hair on their arse at that time that are now old enough? What about the 7 year old who is now old enough to join? What about that Mr. smarty pants attorney? :p

High school graduates have become progressively dumber each year bince 1996, so some noob who is young is likely not going to bring much to the board. The kids are all on this thing called the twitter, anyway. I tried reading it once and it gave me a tremendous headache.

Why not? Everyone should be able to post anything they want to if it is within the rules. If that was the case then the board would have never grown under the Lickliter era. If Iowa gets 50 pointed by Illinois this week then I expect people to come out of the shadows with pitchforks and expect them to post.

Many people were reading through the forums without being a member. I signed up back when you had to he a user to access the OT board. Back in the good ole days when the OT board was fun.

I try to welcome all the new posters. On this point above, I just wanted to let you know that the opinions around Iowa football are for the most part binary. Should Kurt be fired - yes or no. Is Davis the worst offensive coordinator ever? Well, that one is obviously yes. Should we recruit juco LBs - yes or no. Sure, there are nuanced reasons for reaching every opinion, but everything is pretty much binary so "new" opinions are pretty hard to come by.

I've never seen anyone post on here that they think opinions are binary. Nice to see old posters can come up with new opinions too.

If someone has posted something that was posted elsewhere, resist the temptation to post something negative. or if a new poster makes a post and you have been around here for awhile, resist the temptation to act like this is your website and you must therefore somehow demean them or their opinion.

If someone is obviously trolling, email me...if there is a legit debate going on, enjoy it. But enough with the stuff lifted above. this isn't a commune closed off to the world..there are a few folks every day of the year who register for a new account...as in real people and not trolls and bots. That will continue to be the case unless folks run newbies off...that's not something I am interested in. Thanks in advance for complying as well as for not responding to this post in a smart aleck fashion.

Who knew that a thread titled "decorum" about trolling, from the owner of the sight no less, would end up so, so visceral?

I lurked on this board for close to 10 years, when I finally posted, I cracked a few jokes, posted some memes and gifs and some girly pics... I was welcomed. I am fairly positive, so I am sure that helped.

Absolutely they can. But they can also expect to get hammered for it. I would say that a few bad apples spoiled it for most but that's not the case. When someone joins this board and immediately starts a negative thread WAY more often than not that person is a troll.

When this HumorMe fella comes on here and does the same thing, I automatically assume he is a troll. Maybe that's not fair to him and he is actually a Hawk fan but when he said he didn't join earlier because he didn't have anything to complain about, that's pretty much the same as a troll in my book. Why do you have to join a message board only to complain? I joined back in the day when times were good because I actually enjoy talking about the good things. You don't have to only join in the negativity.

lol. You always deliver.

I would guess I've been as bad as anyone at calling people out. I'll try to ignore the cyfans I've posted about and let Jon decide their fate, afterall he never asked me who he should ban.
