Declaring

If he’s smart, sure. But look at Adrian Peterson, dude is so broke he has to keep playing. The minute the checks stop he’s bankrupt.

Oh, you are right, so many of these high paid athletes or stars in other areas are just not good business people or money managers. Many times they hire money managers who rip them off. Tony Dorsett owed the IRS everything, I remember the former Ohio St all pro tight end for the 49ers who had to keep playing because his own dad who was his manager lost ripped him off, invested poorly and lost his money.

Look at boxes who pay a huge entourage and then go broke. There are a lot of money suckers out there and they can find suckers to suck the money from.

You stated that what Taylor has done isn't as impressive as Davis because of the number of games. It didn't matter. Davis carried the ball more in few games.

If you want to debate that Davis did it on bad teams and therefore his numbers are more impressive, that's different. It had nothing to do with fewer games, though.

and doing it on a bad team isn't necessarily more impressive. Good teams are usually more balanced. Sports history is littered with players who had great individual numbers on bad teams. You need look no further than the number of carries he got.

Tua Tagovailoa declared for the draft. I think that's the right decision as well.
Yeah he can't risk further injuries of any kind really in college. His stock can't get higher based on what all he's shown on the field. So yeah roll the dice and see who falls in love with you. Myself I wouldn't take him in 1st round. But I bet someone will. Even if he starts sliding to the middle/late someone will trade up to get him. I doubt he'll slide to 2nd round. But we'll see regardless finish rehab while getting paid is the way to go. He may have had a chance to go number 1 overall next yr if he were to recover, play well and stay healthy. Whole lotta ifs with all that. He's doing the smart thing

Tua ain't good enough to be a star in the NFL over a sustained period. He is too reliant on the pre snap and the first read. He cannot get through progressions very well. Before his hip injury he was insanely physically talented, but he doesn't have the mental tools to hang a long time in the NFL. Anyone interested in drafting him should watch what he did against Clemson in the title game. He had insane talent at WR and RB and when faced with NFL guys on the d-line pressuring him and Simmons at LB, the guy couldn't do anything in the red zone. An Alabama QB having that poor of a game in a pressure situation should be a major red flag. I honestly think Stanley could have performed better in that situation than Tua did.

I can't say I watched him all that close. I know I've seen him hit some of the best WRs college football has had to offer in stride when they are wide open 30 plus yards down field. How will he do with the quick adjusting NFL I dunno. He'll want to take a page out of Brees handbook though. Find ways to not get hit so much and get the ball out of your hand quick. Even Russell Wilson gets hit a little too much for my liking. But he's good at not taking direct hard shots.

So basically you agree that Tua did the right thing?

It does, though. It is easier if you are spreading that many hits out over 27 games as opposed to 22 and I did note the quality disparities in the teams.

You’re about to get the confused cat GIF ;)

The extended season has changed the record books, too. Troy Davis had back to back 2,000 yard season in 11 freaking games. That is insane. Taylor doing it in 13 and 14 games is not nearly as impressive, particularly given how good his teams are. Davis was on awful teams and everyone knew he was getting the rock. And Dobbins broke some Eddie George record. Again, Eddie did that without a conference title game and in one fewer regular season game.

My gal and I were just discussing this.
I don't understand how someone could have even a few million and go broke. You have to be pretty irresponsible if you ask me.

I get it - you don't like Iowa State. Query, xir, if JT played in 11 games this year, would he have broken 2000 yards? No, he needed that piss poor performance in the 14th game against a soft Oregon team to get there. Sad thing is like an eighth of his yards this year came in the Iowa game. Ugh.

You gotta watch that 30 for 30 called Broke. It explains it very well.

The unanswerable part of this is if JT only was in 11 games (12 with a bowl), would he have gotten more carries in those 11 (12) games?

Yep, that is why using a stat based on averages is a number that has to be used in the same sentence as a gross measure of yards, total hits, season bball points, etc.

It is like the discussion is it safer to drive on 2 lane highways vs multilane expressways with separated medians and looking only at gross numbers of passenger deaths on each type of road. That tells you nothing unless you look at deaths per passenger road mile traveled. I dont know the answer to this question but gross numbers do not necessarily give you the true answer.

Well for starters a million is not that much. Especially if you are retiring at a young age.
You can't go around acting "tax return rich".

A million dollars is indeed not what it was even 20-30 years ago but smart people who know how to invest, manage, and use their money should be able to do very well on 1 million after taxes.

Of course the other part is how high on the hog a person wants to live.

And my gosh I would hope these young athletes would want to work or do something meaningful in their lives after sports

I agree.

If I remember correctly Reggie Roby stated that early on in his NFL career he had someone, either an agent or someone close to him break him financially.
