Oh shit ***hitting palm against forehead*** why didn't you tell us that sooner? We could have just quit wishing for more than mediocrity a LONG time ago. You idiots should remember we had more Big 10 wins in the 80's than any other school in the Big 10....or is a decade long amount of information considered a fluke and to never be aspired to again. Some of you are sooooo blind to what could have been, and still could be if we had a REAL Head Coach
Do you even bother to figure out if what you say is true, or do you just spout off? In a 10 year span from '81-'90 (I used those years, because 90 was better than 80 for the Hawks). Iowa was tied for second most wins. Michigan had 66 B1G wins, Iowa and OSU both had 55. So Yeah Iowa did well, but we were not close to #1 in wins.
Interestingly enough though, from '01-'10 the Iowa Hawkeyes were 2nd in the B1G in wins as well. OSU had 66 B1G wins and Iowa and Michigan tied with 50 and Wisconsin 47, Penn St. 45, and MSU 37.
So to use your own logic, is a decade long amount of information considered a fluke? Under KF we did the exact same thing that Fry did, and I would contend Fry had a much, much easier road winning games in the B1G in the 80's. Wisconsin was awful, Northwestern was putrid, Illinois was bad, and so was Purdue and Minnesota, basically it was Michigan and OSU and Iowa. KF had to play against good Northwestern teams, and Wisconsin, and Penn St. and OSU and Michigan and Purdue was good as well.
I don't think either run by Iowa (in the 80's and 00's) was elite. It takes being THE BEST in the conference over a 10 year run to reach elite, or a National title, or multiple playoff appearances now. Wisconsin isn't an "elite" program and they have had a very nice run the last 10 years. MSU isn't "elite" and they have had a very good 6 year run. Maybe your standards are lower, but I set the bar high for a extended period of time in order to be considered "elite". Oh, and I can enjoy Iowa being very good, runs like Hayden in the 80's and Ferentz in the 00's are awesome to experience.
