Combine Results

Nice. Van Ness 1st attempt in 40 was 4.64 not bad at all. Best so far was 4.44.

Lukas is listed as 6'5" and 272 lbs. I didn't know he was that tall.

Most ran in the 4.7 to 4.8 range.

Van Ness 2nd 40 was 4.66. He's in the top set of runners. Still getting props from the NFL Network.

That is about what Wadley ran.

If Van Ness goes in the first round...
Have there been other college non-starters who have been first round NFL picks?

Nonstarters even getting drafted is probably pretty rare. That quarterback from the real USC got drafted, but I think it was late. Barry Sanders only started a year and was a first rounder, but he probably would have been a first rounder even if he didn't start a year.

Antonio Gates never even played college football at all.

Van Ness' combine #s didn't sound that impressive, compared to other DE/DLine rushers. According to his agent his biggest strength is his motor -- hard to quantify that at a combine.
Campbell, on the other hand, is simply elite in every way. Hard to imagine a surer bet in the upcoming draft than him, at ANY position.

As to Van Ness…Can you read?

Interesting story indeed.

He wanted to go to Sparty and play both BB and FB.

Saban nixed the idea of BB so Gates moved on (a few times) and finally ended up playing MAC-level BB.

As far as FB, he was privately worked out by the Chargers who immediately signed him.

He wasn't drafted though.

Turned in to a phenomenal tight end and started a trend for teams to look for basketball players to try out at tight end.

Well, Eppy did not start his sophomore year and was still first team all conference. He was clearly the best DL on the team, but did not start. Starting on the DL at Iowa isn't critical. There are a lot of plays to go around.

Its a cool story on Van Ness, especially if he goes in the first round. It shows that Parker is either an evil genius with an embarrassment of riches or a guy who likes NFL talent standing next to him on the first play.
