coin flip=offense, bad decision IMO

Melrose, appreciate your thoughts...I will admit I did not know that ferentz pretty much always takes the ball...I thought he used to defer quite a bit. I would be interested to see the won/loss record starting with the ball vs. starting on defense. Overall it might not make a bit of difference with a large sample size. But situationally, in a one game scenario I think these things can make huge differences. I like the debate also, thank you all for contributing

It would be hard to measure since Ferentz pretty much always takes the ball. I know Iowa won the toss last year at Penn St & deferred due to the inclement weather for that game, windy rain. He deferred definitely due to the weather. To be honest, I cannot recall any game he deferred prior to that game but I know there prob are a couple.

Actually, remember Penn St's 1st play of the 2009 white-out game, a 70 some yd touchdown pass, & Iowa started on D. One just never knows what is going to happen is my point.

I believe early game jitters and too much adrenaline can impact an offense more negatively than a good defense. A pumped up defense can also be overly aggressive and give up a huge play, but I like the d's chances better in that setting.

Yea, I hear ya. An amped up D is not nearly as bad as an amped up O on the road. Also depends if the O is a veteran O or young O. Boy, there is A LOT that can go into this decision.

Because Iowa has never been in a loud stadium before? Please.

Agree 100%, and again. You do not base your game plan on the environment. You base it on the conditions that you can not control.

Environmental Control, the answer to that is in the word. Mental. If the team is mentally ready for the game, then there could have been twice as many people in there. The team was ready, a fluke punt block does not count.

No one has given a valid reason for the defense to start other than this silly "environment" reason.

I like taking the ball first, if Iows can score or gain field position it puts the other team behind or at a disadvantage.

This is silly and has nothing to do with the ultimate outcome of the game. Whether you or I might have taken the ball or defered is not our concern. The good captain does everything for a reason. He is consistent and this is a strength; not a weakness.

I wonder if Stoops as an ex-defensive player now coaching in a revenge game at home against his former team might of thought..."nice, they are going to receive, we will kick it deep...give 'em the touchback, they will probably run on first and second down so we are going to completely sell out the whole series and gamble we don't get burned deep on third. Then we are going after the punt as hard as we can"......we played right into Stoops hands in my opinion by taking the ball first

anyone that thinks that the first possession of games doesn't matter, i do not believe....it all goes back to the coin flip decision [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eetk2Ue4xbo]YouTube - Ween - Baby Bitch[/ame]
