Clayborn's 'Only team in state' comment makes ISU Locker Room

I'm not discounting that the staff uses certain tactics to motivate players...it's very possible that they pull quotes from the other team's players and post it on the "bulletin board" but you are out of your flippin mind if you think KF allows his coaching staff to bring up OSU or any other opponent during a week in which they are preparing for a different opponent(or that his coaching staff are stupid enough to even think about doing it). Frankly I think it's ridiculous that ISU uses Iowa as motivation for their other preseason games...but to each his own.

KF: Guys...this week we've got Michigan. They're going to be a tough opponent...blah blah blah...we have to respect what they do...yadda yadda yadda...get your heads in the game...meh...did you guys hear what Brandon Saine from OSU said about us last week?

KF: Well it wasn't exactly about America...and he didn't directly mention us...but that's the problem. That bastard said that the only teams in the Big Ten that they worry about are Michigan, Penn St, and Wisconsin. Can you believe that guys...he didn't even mention us...what a jerk. Doesn't he realize that we are in the same conference and have been for quite some time?
 
They don't use "Iowa" specifically for that kind of motivation, but they absolutely are going to play the "disrespect" card. They'd be foolish not to. ISU does this no more so than does Iowa...or any other coaching staff in America. They do it, because motivation matters in football and every little extra oomph of motivation a coach can squeeze out helps...its tough to keep any team fully motivated for 12 games. So coaches use every tool at their disposal.

And how do you know if it works? Words don't make you better at football.

You can get all hyper and act like ISU is going to turn into the incredible hulk over this, but in reality, this doesn't make ISU any better at football.

The game is 60 minutes, and over the course of that, the better and more discipline team will win the game.

Penn State was pretty motivated last year too, and they got theirs...
 
As stated earlier, most OSU fans already think this and their players most likely do as well. Does it **** Iowa fans and players off? The fans for sure, and the players probably. But Iowa fans don't play in the game and the players play hard every game. So do Hawk fans think they have the better team, of course they do and the players probably do as well. But getting all up in the air is not going to help win any game.

Yes, losing 35-3 is a motivational factor. Simply playing a rivalry game is as well. But its also true that every extra brick builds the motivation to a higher level. I would add as a caveat, that a team can actually get "too hyped" for a game and thus make errors...but Rhoads seems pretty good at managing his team's preparedness so I'm not too concerned on that level. Anyway, this stuff from AC absolutely can make this game more competitive...how much so is anyone's guess. But I would suggest that those on here expecting Iowa to have a cakewalk, are deeply misguided. Guess we'll know in short order.

You're right, motivation does matter. Unfortunately for ISU, talent matters more. Motivation is only going to get ISU so far.
 
Does anyone think that Iowa's motivation for this game is going to be "Keep ISU out of the Endzone and off the scoreboard?" Do you think Norm will tell his defense, "Hey guys, we held them to 3 points at their place last year, and if we "think" we are a better defense this year then we had better to hold them to 0"?
I think he might as he tries to fuel that defense a different way each week for each opponent. Kinda how the "6 Seconds of Hell" was something he preached well before the players mentioned it in a postgame interview...just a thought, as Iowa will have goals for this game as well, and not just ISU.
Heck, Doyle might have something posted for the Defensive Unit when they are in the weight room and film room stating that "Do you want to be the defense that let these guys in the Endzone?".
I am guessing that something of the sort may get the Defenses attention...

Good point. I thing our "D" would be a little ticked off if they were the first ones in nearly four seasons to let ISU get a touchdown on them.
 
The thing is, bulletin board material only goes so far. It has a little merit, but it's not going to the deciding factor giving one team an edge over another. Mentality is huge in sports, but you still have to keep things at face value.
 
I'll say as I've said all along. ISU can post all the bulletin board material they want. They can't do a damn thing about it. These two programs are so far apart talent wise, Iowa can say anything they want. Heck, Iowa didn't even play that good last year and yet they won by 32.

In my experience the team that has all that "Extra" motivation usually comes out really strong...but if you weather that first series or two...the game evens out and it's back to playing football, and the team with the even keel usually has the upper hand (Ask John Wooden who was known to take timeouts in NCAA title games, just to remind his guys to not get too high, nor too low.)
 
ISU will have plenty of motivation for the game this year, I expect us to win, but it will be much closer than last year. This thread is amazing...if you knew nothing about the history of these two teams you would think ISU was a D1AA team that hasn't beaten Iowa in 20 years based off the posts. How quickly some posters forget. The gap between Iowa and ISU isn't as big as many of you believe it to be.

You see it in sports movies a lot, and people want to believe that it happens the same way in real life.

The gap is huge this year, talent wise.

ISU has a winning record against Kirk Ferentz...and has beaten some VERY good Iowa teams, in Iowa City no less. The talent disparity is no greater now than it was then, and the coaching at ISU is as good as its ever been. Nobody has proclaimed that a little bulletin board material, by itself, will win this football game. But coaches use bulletin board material for a reason...because it can give a team that extra oomph to pull out a win. With the exception of last year, this series has been VERY hard fought over the last decade...a little extra oomph might be enough to turn a close defeat into a narrow victory. It may not...but the odds certainly got a little bit better thanks to Mr. AC's comments. Gohawks spoke wisely above, many of you would do well to pay heed to your fellow Hawkeye's words.

Since 1998, Iowa has outscored ISU by only a 230-215 margin...and that includes last years 35-3 Iowa victory. That is hardly dominance. This is not an argument about which team has had more general success as a program, its about this series since KF arrived...heck, even over just the past 5 years the series is just 3-2 for Iowa. So the margin between these two teams...IN THIS GAME...is very narrow.

I would be more worried about the 346 lb offensive lineman taking the place of the guy that got kicked off the team lining up against our defensive unit...that tub of lard is going to be in trouble trying block our guys...Their qb will be making a lot of quick throws agains...
