Where's the option for no more GD?

Jake took his shot down field and it turned out poorly. Everybody in the football world knows that since KF/GD run the offense that he would not go down field anymore.

CJ made his shot down the field thanks to a great catch by Powell. Since he connected, the threat remained that maybe, just maybe he would be allowed to take another shot down field.

I wasn't at the game, but it appeared that there were several deep routes being run all day. CJ in particular gave some long hard looks down the field but then checked down when it wasn't there. He also threw one deep to Smith that created a PI. Believe me, CJ is a lot more willing to look down the field than Jake is. That's not on the OC, that's a confidence/ability thing.

He's got a quick release plus a strong arm plus accuracy.

That's like the holy trinity of quarterbacking skills. Add on good decisionmaking, and you're looking at serious potential.

Look, I don't know how good Beathard is. I do know that he's demonstrated arm strength and a quick release that are superior to the other guy. Looks more accurate too, though that one isn't as obvious.

Bingo. Release, arm strength = intangibles.

Watch Beathard throw the ball and watch Rudock throw the ball. Simple enough.

Even if the turnovers are there - he has more potential.

Agree, and his teammates seem to like him better. I have no idea if that's true or not, but it just "feels" better when he's in. Does that make sense to anybody else, or am I just crazy?

I just dont see how Ferentz would not give CJ the start this saturday after his gm against Pitt.

You know what stood out to me on Saturday. The receivers seem to catch the ball when Beathard throws it. Rudock must throw a slippery ball or something. I think I counted three drops on ball thrown by Jake Saturday. If that guy can't throw a ball that receivers can catch when it's right in their hands...well, we SHOULD change QB's.

It's not like we would have scored if Powell catches that first one...or kept the drive alive when Vandenberg dropped his. Those points wouldn't have helped Jake anyway since he doesn't look downfield...bring on CJ.

There's no denying CJ might be a special talent but both QB's were beneficiaries of a much improved game plan Saturday. If Powell makes that catch JR has excellent numbers as well (not just good). JR had 8.0 ypa which is very good to and where we need to be in order to get the running game going. You would think JRs ball would be easy to catch but maybe not.

The giggest difference I see between CJ and JR is that CJ is willing to stand in the pocket and take a shot to get a pass off. JR is not. If he starts feeling the pressure, he bails. That's enough for me to pick CJ. That's also not something that KF or GD would see in practice, as they don't put the QBs under game speed , real pressure.

I like how you guys think Jake was the problem Saturday. I'm all for giving CJ a shot but as long as we've got Davis as the OC it really isn't going to make any difference

What planet are you on??? Who was the coordinator in the 2nd half? The offense looked good in the 2nd half.

Getting here too late but it would've been interesting to have a third choice of Jake AND CJ (i.e. one half for each against Purdue).
I for one would love to see a duel where each guy knows going in that they have exactly one half each to blow the doors off Purdue.

Tristan's quicker release and stronger arm enables him to lead the receiver more effectively. Go back and watch Riddick's passes; he doesn't place the ball on average quite as well.

what do you mean poorly, Jake hit powell right in the hands, then he got a 15 yard PI penalty going to smith and he had a 40 yard completion to Vandeberg.

Jake stinks at this level. CJ might be terrific, would love to see him get a chance. Frankly, won't watch Hawks anemic O while Ruddock at QB. Predictable boring and unimaginative.

Jake is far from stinking it up. He played very well last year. If the so called dominant running game was cranking out 5 yards per carry from the first game on he would have had a lot better passing game and open receivers.

I think Jake has regressed or gotten a little gun shy this year but he hardly stinks with good numbers in UNI and Ball St games and in the limited touches he had in the Pitt first half.

The ISU game - all the hawks played below par or more.

Jake actually had more opportunities in the Pitt game than CJ did. He had four drives to try to score and CJ only had 3.

There should be an option for either because I think both can get the job done.

People tend to look for facts to justify their conclusion and dismiss what doesn't agree with their conclusion. This seems to be the case with a lot of people on here with respect to playing Beathard.

And the one incompletion beathard threw should have been a TD. Vandeberg stops turns an jumps instead of running through the route. If he did the ball would have been right there. Maybe he is used to the under thrown ball from Rudock.
