Fran's system will work just fine without a true 5. Needs a strong PG and four guys 6'6-6'10 who can shoot, drive and post-up. And I'd take quickness and hops over a lumbering 7 footer on defense...unless you can find someone special.

We should be shooting for posts with size and athleticism, there is allot of them out there in any given year.

It's not an either or proposition.

The trend in college basketball is more of the shorter post players (6'6" to 6'9") who are really athletic and can maybe even shoot a little bit. Woodbury has value, and if an elite 7-footer wanted to come to Iowa I'd gladly take him. But Fran's system absolutely works with guys like Branden Dawson, Jameel McKay, etc. I'd wager those are the kind of players he'd really prefer to have in the paint.

Gabe Olesani says "hi".

Mcay and Dawson can't shoot and if either one was 6'11 or bigger they would already be in the NBA.

Being shorter is not an advantage it's the opposite. It doesn't make you fit into anything better.

The 4 best players in the country are Okafor, Cauley Stein, Towns and Kaminski. All bigs who are either skilled or very athletic or both and none would be nearly as good if they were the size of Dawson and conversely Dawson would be a top 3 pick if he was 6'11.

Sounds like Iowa is bringing him in to play pg more than wing. A team full of athletic, 6'5" and taller players gives a lot of flexibility on both ends.

This can be good as far as speed and overall athleticism but it could leave us very vulnerable under the boards and leave with limited abilities as far as scoring in the paint.

Personally I don't think having a bunch of 6'5", 6'6", 6'7" guys is going to cut it in the big ten. You have to have size at the post and quickness and great skill at the guard positions. One of the knocks on Lick was this same mindset of being under sized. A 6'9" guy with very good leaping ability would be ok, but 6'7" guys is not going to cut it under the basket. Let's don't kid ourselves.

Lick had 6'5" guys like Gatens and May playing the 4 at times. That's not what you want. Fran didn't do that and won't do that. He is in on some solid bigs for the 2016 class and already has Pemsl in the bag. Some of the other guys he is in on include Nick Rakocevic(6'9"), Tyler Cook(6'8"), and Austin Davis(6'10"). He wouldn't be recruiting them if he didn't want more size than 6'7" players.

Iowa has gotten better every year under Fran and tied for 3rd in the Big 10 in his 5th year. But if you have seen each of the incoming recruits play several times and have a detailed breakdown on each of them I'm all ears. That's what I thought.

A lot of people like to compare Mr. Davis with Fran. Mr. Davis in his 13 seasons at Iowa finished higher than 3rd place..... once. He tied for second in the conference in 1996-97. His first year with the Elite 8 finish the Hawks finished 3rd in the conference.

In his 9 seasons at Iowa, Lute finished higher than 3rd place only three times. He won the conference Ronnie's junior year. That was the last time Iowa finished first or shared first in the Big 10... 1978-79. (And we lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament that year)

Remember, Aaron White has one other offer from Dusquene (sp)? And he turned out pretty good. Not saying he will turn out that good but no need to knock him until we see him for a couple years.

Aaron also had offers from Boston College, Northwestern, and Temple. That said, I agree with your point, you simply don't know for sure how a player will develop and mesh with a team until he's on campus and given a chance. Like someone else posted earlier, JO had some of the best offers out of everyone on the roster and he has ended up being a contributor off the bench as a senior. That's not meant as a slight towards Josh, just how it ended up.

Lute finished second or better in four of his last five years. The other year they finished fourth & went to Indianapolis.

No, one of the knocks on Lickliter was that he got short guys who weren't athletic. There's a big difference between guys like Dawson and Adrien Payne, and a guy like Brennan Cougill. And it wasn't their listed heights.

Theres a big difference between Dawson and Paynes height too.

Payne is 6'10 with a huge wing span. Prototypical size for a college 5.

Dawson is listed at 6'6 and realistically probably shorter.

I was thinking Payne was listed at 6'9", but I misremembered.

I'll agree with the second sentence. The year they finished fourth in the Big 10 they went to the Final Four. But the first sentence - nope. Here's a screen shot from the Wikipedia entry on Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball for Lute's years at Iowa:

They finished first or second (third or higher) three times.
