Chicago Cubs 2016 Thread

The starting pitching is where Theo has to concentrate. You will probably have to replace Lackey and Lester within the next year or 2, maybe even Arrieta.

Lackey will retire and it's unclear how much Arrieta will command. A lot will depend on which Jake we see in 2017. If it's closer to the 2015 version the Cubs may not want to pay that much. Lester is signed for like 3 or 4 more years isn't he?

I thought Lester was a FA after next year. i could be wrong though. There are PED rumors floating around Arrieta i don't know what is true and what isn't. He will be 33 next spring, do you start looking elsewhere? I don't know.

I haven't heard much about PED rumors with Jake, maybe some lone soul trying to make a name for themselves but I don't think anyone who is around him thinks that. Jake will be interesting for sure next offseason. Baseball reference says he is 30 right now, and will be 31 in March. So he'd be 32 in March of 2018. He is going to try and cash in that one huge deal if he can just because he's never had it being a late bloomer. I just don't see the Cubs paying that much for a 32 year old, maybe if it was only 2-3 year deal. Pitching, however, is the one thing we are a little thin on in the minor leagues so they may be forced to. Lester is signed through 2020.

I have to say I agree with the article. I think that the Cubs stand pat with FA for position players, and address the bullpen (will make a run for Kenley Jensen). They will also continue to look at young controllable pitching. I don't know if they can get very far on that front, but I think they try. I would love to see the Cubs move Soler for some young controllable starting pitching.

I agree I think bullpen is the way to look right now. I think our starters are good enough to get us to the 6th inning, then turn it over to a shut down pen. I'd like Jansen too. Wood will be gone possibly, and there is a good chance Montgomery is in the rotation so we'll need a solid lefty out of the pen also. Rob Zastryny (sp?) may be in the mix too.

Chris Bryant is the first ever College Player of the Year, Minor League Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and MVP in consecutive years. That is quite an accomplishment.

Harry Caray's restaurant chain CEO Grant DePorter has purchased Cub's catcher David Ross's gear. A cool $50,000.00 got him a signed helmet, chest protector and shinn guards.

I see the Cubs signed Jon Jay to a single year contract. I assume that means they have no plans to resign Fowler. Hate to see that. Why break up a good thing?

4 years and 80 million dollars is why. Dexter rightfully wants a longer term deal, and the Cubs don't want to sign up for that.

Yep the unfortunate business side of baseball. The Cubs would love to have him back but just can't commit that much to an older player as they have Almora and Happ coming up too. Jay is just a stop gap for a year. When they spend big money again it'll be for pitching and to try and lock up Bryant and Russell long term I'd guess. Rumor yesterday they want to store up cash this year for a big run at the Japanese superstar DH/Pitcher whose name escapes me right now. He is a stud apparently

His name is Shohei Ohtani....and he recently hit a ball through the Tokyo Dome. Ok, so it found an opening between panels, but his stats are certainly eye opening, both batting and pitching.

Yep that guy :)
He apparently is a great hitter and also pitcher. Weird combo for an NL player, seems more suited for an AL team.
We need to start a Cubs offseason thread like past years now I guess. Whose in charge of that LOL?
