Charlie Jones on Why He Left for Purdue

There's a lot of room for improvement on offense. If they are 121st again this season, they will inevitably lose more games this season because the schedule is tougher. But I think Iowa does whatever it needs to do to win a lot of years. If that's banking on a top 10 defense, they'll do it. I expect them to have another one of those this year so in turn, I expect a similar result really. If the offense can just be complimentary they will have similar success if not better success. There isn't a game on the schedule that I don't think they can win sans at Ohio State. So there for, in my mind, I aint too worried. Ya'll take Purdue, I get Iowa.

It is very possible that this team ends up with 8 or 9 wins but is a better team than last year. I am expecting that.

I wish we had a non con game worth talking about because ISU is rebuilding and I'm not sure what to think of them. I don't think we'll know a ton about what we'll be till we play Rutgers and Michigan. Just depends how those first few games go but if we struggle struggle against ISU and Nevada... Ugh oh.

Oh yes he does. Even Hayden Fry had the first drive scripted. KF has been doing that for years. I guarantee they have certain plays they are going to run when the 1st 3rd and 6 or 3rd and 8 happens at this part of the field. Those kinds of plays are logged down for the game for the whole game.
I didn't think teams did the whole scripting thing past the first few plays anymore. To really do that 10 plus plays is kinda dumb because you can't foresee the game situations. Down and distance what hashmark you're on in the redzone the defense and how they are lined up etc etc etc. The game now is all about situationally adjusting and if they are really scripting the first 10-15 plays that's nuts in and of itself I think

I'm ok with having a package of situational plays where when it's 3rd and 2 or less from midfield they either do this or this kind of thing. I'm sure they break things down kinda like that. But I don't think it's totally nailed down quite the way you're implying.

Yea, I never completely understood it for that very same reason you mention. I suppose it's more of a group of calls that can be called for certain scenarios. But, again, I never really understood how it can provide success because it depends on many factors.

I don't know if they do that so much anymore, but I do know they have set plays for certain down and distances they have logged down.

From my understanding, KF is involved in the offense minutia a lot more than people think. He is an offensive line coach. I think he leaves the defense to Parker, but he is more involved with the offense.

I agree that BF calls the plays and other than a handful of games, he has never struck me as an inspiring play-caller. But, we said the same thing about KOK.

Do I believe there are better OCs out there that could run KF's offense more dynamically? Sure. But, as Fry and others have stated on here a million times, hiring a coach is a crapshoot, and you could just as easily hire a new coach that is just as bad or someone who does not fit in with what KF wants to do with the game as a whole. It rarely works when the OC and HC do not see eye to eye. Look at the Vikings the last 7 years!

Whomever is Iowa's OC, he will still be shackled by KF's ultraconservative approach. I am confident that KF has a plaque above his desk that says "When you throw the football three things can happen, and two of them are bad." :)

Brian, Petras, and the offense as a whole are going to be better this year. I am confident of that. Last year was a shit show with a way too young and small OL, a RB who did not fit the system very well, and a QB and OC that are not talented enough to make up for a lack of consistent running attack.

The line is bigger and more talented as a whole. The RBs look like downhill Iowa RBs. Petras will not only benefit from a better running game, but his offseason training at the Manning Camp and the addition of the QB consultant BF hired are going to pay dividends.

All that said, Iowa's offense will, at best, ascend to mediocrity. With our D, the team will be dangerous with an average offense.

I am not going to pucker my ass over comments from a transfer. If he wanted to go to school that passes the ball a lot, he shouldn't have come to Iowa in the first place. Iowa is the same team it has been for 22 years. The fans have had the same gripes about the OCs during that entire time, whether BF, KOK, or GD. Iowa is what it is on offense, and while we would like to see a better offense, the overall philosophy isn't going to change until KF hangs them up. I don't give a shit what this kid has to say about it, I will just enjoy another 9-10 win season.

Everything is fine as long as they continue to win 8, 9, 10 games a year. If that dips, things start to be really uncomfortable.

The good news is that the players will be more ready in the experience category by the time they hit Michigan.

Especially with Nico being injured, it's time to see what the youngsters can do. Best of luck in your future Charlie, except of course against Iowa.

Charlie (and the Hawkeyes football program itself) is a victim of Brian as both and OC and QB coach.

I’m sure it won’t be, but that interview should be an embarrassing wake up call to Iowa football.

Could maybe use a guy like Jones and even Tracy with 47 of our receivers hurt before the season starts.

I’m just gonna go ahead and do it…#firebrian
An air raid siren on Brian's bed stand couldn't wake him up.

Aidan O'Connell loses his #1 receiver for the season because of grades. His childhood friend is looking at being #2 or 3 on the Iowa depth chart. You don't suppose he might have called Charlie Jones up for a chat, do you?

I will get scolded for this, but I am disappointed in what I think was his lack of gratitude. From Buffalo, a long shot by the coaches, to a lot of playing time quite quickly. Remember, guys were blocking for him in his heroic return game. And he was recognized as a “big play” waiting to happen on O. His coaches gave him plenty of good ink, as did the local press. So then, he walks away. And rubs our noses in the transfer to Purdue.
Just to be clear, this is my first ever criticism of a transfer out. Just had to speak my piece.

I won't scold you. I get the take. But, at the end of the day there isn't the same kind of loyalty between players and programs as there was back in the day. Coaches certainly can pick up and move to greener pastures. While I would like to think that this young man would have felt he owed it to the Iowa coaches to finish his career as a Hawk, at the end of the day, he has to do what is best for him and his future. Next man up.

End of the day it sucks to be on this end of it. But I get it. The two way street of coaches being able to hop around however they want and players can too. I remember when Adam Haluska came to us and ISU being bent pretty hard over it and of course Uthoff and how his transferring in all went down. Different sport but similar premise. These guys can do what they want with their careers it's short. The coaches that lose sleep over it are wasting their time. Coach up the guys you have and recruit some more.

The one thing that really should be looked at now that NIL is so prevelant is just the marriage between the collectives and coaching staffs themselves and how the tampering is getting done. I'm not sure how to police any of it but we all know that stuff is going on. As cutthroat as recruiting is we know that's a thing and needs to be policed somehow. Smarter folks than me need to be figuring it out.

I hear ya and exactly what I thought when it was announced he was in the portal. First thing I thought is you ungracious b-stard. Great point about guys blocking for him. Comes off as completely selfish. I'm sure that didn't sit well with KF and company. This is exactly the way our young now see things. No commitment to anything, just comfort. It's a "me" society now and "what can I get" kind of society.

This player leaving is completely different than a guy buried on a depth chart seeking playing time. Aidan O'connor was a walk on at Purdue so both these guys were lightly recruited. If they both came out as high 3 or 4*, there is a chance they could have gone to the same place, but they had to go out and find their own paths. When they both became successful at different places, that provided them the opportunity to join up again because of circumstances. As mentioned above, I have no doubt O'connor put a bug in his ear. Hell, I think he even admitted they kept in touch and talked on a consistent basis.

I sure hope the hell Iowa can dig in and find a way to win the BIG 10 this year. That would be the icing on my cake for this situation.

Oh, add into that having Iowa's KO return man being BIG specialist of the year and all-American.

Take that Charlie!

Yep - I'll be the leading the charge and carrying a biggest pitchfork - but until it dips I aint too worried about much. Just keep winning and churning out high win totals and shoveling heaps of talent to the NFL and brining in good players and classes. If Iowa does that the machine keeps rolling and make no mistake about it, Iowa is a football machine at this point. Not elite at all times on the field, but from a marketing, brand, program success, NFL success standpoint etc - this program is humming. Not sure I want to change much and if we do, I don't want it to be at the expense of success on the field with W's and L's - that's literally the only thing that matters to me.
