Charlie Jones on Why He Left for Purdue

I thought Charlie gave a classy honest interview. Sad he's gone and wish him well. Anyone with eyes ears brain can see there is a much better chance at getting a sniff of NFL action as a WR playing for a Purdue offense vs an Iowa offense. I hope Charlie has a great year cept one game!

I agree and wish him the best and hope he avoids injuries. Not sure he is a NFL caliber receiver, but being a receiver going to a school that throws a lot more over a school who is a ball control run, short control passes school, only makes sense for him.

Everyone liked his courage to field punts and make big plays doing so. Now that he wants a better shot and more playing time some are coming down on him.

Where have I seen this attitude before in our country? Sounds so TRUMPish.

When I see guys like that Hunter Renfrow out there and Beasley up in Buffalo doing what they do I can't just write off a guy like Jones and say he can't. He's fast/quick enough so it's just about opportunity and performing. How are they using him etc. That's where staying at Iowa would probably prevent him from getting looked at as much as going to Purdue will. David Bell with a 4.6 40 time is in the NFL now because he can play ball and showed it at Purdue. If Bell woulda been at Iowa with one third of the stats would he still?.... I doubt it

I could t agree more. Look I understand pouring your heart out in support of a player and the sting that comes when they transfer.

Did he grow and improve under the Iowa program? I have no doubt that he did. Would he have grown as much as quickly under a non-power five program? Probably not.

A person has to follow the pathway that gives him the best opportunity to play and grow and try to display enough to have a chance to fill a dream of playing in the NFL some day. I think most people would do the same thing if the opportunity came there way.

I wish him the very best except when we play Purdue. I hope on that day he drops every pass that comes his way or fumbles the ones he catches.

Mod, can you ban this guy! This ain't the open thread!

Just kiddin'

There's a lot of room for improvement on offense. If they are 121st again this season, they will inevitably lose more games this season because the schedule is tougher. But I think Iowa does whatever it needs to do to win a lot of years. If that's banking on a top 10 defense, they'll do it. I expect them to have another one of those this year so in turn, I expect a similar result really. If the offense can just be complimentary they will have similar success if not better success. There isn't a game on the schedule that I don't think they can win sans at Ohio State. So there for, in my mind, I aint too worried. Ya'll take Purdue, I get Iowa.
I think you hit the nail on the head here. What KF probably doesn't get enough credit for is the way he does make adjustments year-to-year based on the personnel, talent in certain areas, injuries, etc. Good example, the year that we were down to the sixth string running back and all Drew Tate did was throw the ball for the most part. And we won 9-10 games, IIRC.
I think the offense will be better this year and if it isn't, we'll suffer the consequences. But there is talent on this team and the coaching staff has shown the ability to find a way to win on most Saturdays, and that's the name of the game.
As for Brohm, I think he is a tremendous offensive mind. But while he has had some great wins (see Ohio State in 2018) and been a thorn in our side, he hasn't won big at Purdue. And that is in the lesser of the two B1G divisions. This could be a big year for them but they'll have to show it.

Nah, this is out of complete desperation with no other path. That's a little bit different than giving credit for adjusting in my book They had to become one-dimensional. Also, that was completely different than his game philosophy and sure it was wearing on him. Yes, he changed course, but, he really had no other option that year.

You don't make adjustments when things are going fine, you make them when they're not. They made the adjustment that year and it was highly successful. If things don't work out, we end up with a losing record that year, no doubt.
There are a lot of adjustments that are made that we as fans never notice. My bigger point is that this coaching staff makes adjustments and they're usually pretty good at it. Last year? Not so much. They probably did a lot of things that we didn't notice and none of them worked. Sometimes it's hard to adjust when you can't block the guy in front of you. But you don't win the number of games that this coaching staff has without making good adjustments.

My point is that every coach in America would have had to make the adjustment because they had to, no other path that season out of desperation. There was nothing else they could have done.

I just don't think its an apples to apples comparison. It isn't like they made an adjustment to go out of man to a zone in the secondary. They had to be pass happy at that point, and every other coach would have had to do the same thing. That's all I'm sayin'.

You do when your defense leads the nation in INT's with 3 going for TD's, setting that offense up with short fields, and with such a record of holding opposing teams under 25 pts.

On offense, Iowa abysmal in long drives last year. They had short fields because of the defense and special teams.

Without that D and special teams, Iowa is a 7-5 team at best.

I can remember us all complaining about how vanilla our offense was 20 years ago. And it hasn't ever changed. People can tell me not to complain because we're winning 8,9,10 games per year, and maybe I'm being a glass half empty guy, but how many games have we lost because of that vanilla offense and KF refusing to adjust things offensively? How many times have teams stacked the box and he'll still run it up the middle ALL game. And it's not only how many games have we lost because of the vanilla O, but how many talented receivers have we wasted the talent of?

20 rears ago Banks made adjustments on the fly and drove KF nuts. He tried to make a border collie into a lab.
