Charlie Jones in the portal

I am being very selfish here and hope he doesnt find a team and comes back. Way too big of an asset in the return game and a very good receiver. I wonder if he didnt get the receiving targets he wanted during spring ball and wants to go somewhere that plays a lot of 3 and 4 receiver sets.

So Keegan Johnson starting at #1 wideout, Bruce the main starter at slotback. Jones has one season left to show scouts he could be a very good slot type receiver.
 
GOOD. I HOPE THE DOOR DOESN'T HIT HIM IN THE ASS ON HIS WAY OUT. WE DIDN'T NEED HIM ANYWAY AND FRANKLY I DIDN'T WANT HIM ON THE ROSTER ANYMORE. DUDE LOST A STEP IN THE RETURN GAME AND OVERESTIMATED HIS SPEED GIVING US BAD FIELD POSITION TOO MANY TIMES. I LIKE THE WR CORPS WHO WE HAVE AND HAD THIS GUY SLATED AS THE THIRD STRING KR/PR AND FOURTH STRING WR, SO THIS IS ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION BECAUSE HE'S NOT SIPHONING REPS AWAY FROM GUYS WHO WANT TO PLAY.

I don't begrudge a guy like him wanting to get more touches and more $. To get those he'd have to go somewhere else. He isn't going to get more volume from Petras and BF. He pretty much hit his ceiling of production with them I would bet. If he's going to get an NFL shot he'll want to be on a bigger stage with more volume so I get it.

However I don't like the timing of it. I wish he'd have done it prior to spring ball because that woulda meant more reps for others and time to replace him. But that's the NIL Transfer portal world we live in.

I don't think he even needs a bigger stage, just more volume. Iowa was ranked second in the country for a brief period last year until we absolutely shit the bed against Purdue and left a fucking mess worse than the bed of that drug addled fiend in the documentary Seven. The shit was thicker and more disgusting than the bathroom in Trainspotting. Do you remember that game? Guh.

Anyway, I doubt he's gonna wind up somewhere that is ranked 2 or higher next year. Hell, he'd be better off going to a MAC, CUSA or MWAC school and putting up 90 catches than staying at Iowa and getting 3 looks a game. He's already established return tape against solid D-1 competition, put him on a pass offense in a warmer environment where he gets 10 looks a game so he can show he can play the slot consistently and he'll get some NFL looks.
 
Had openly stated he wanted to gain more film time at the receiver position as one of his reasons for return. Maybe he saw enough of Iowa's "reinvigorated offense" this Spring to see little changed.

Purdue, why not? All you have to do is look at their offense and in particular their passing stats. Nobody threw the ball more in the BIG than Purdue last year.........and at a 70% completion rate.
 
Strange date to enter. I thought May 1 was the last date to enter to be eligible for next year w/o waiver? Also he already used his free transfer when coming from Buffalo so a waiver will have to be approved I assume?

O’Connell chucking the ball all over the yard, he could easily get 70 to 80 catches next year in Purdue’s offense.
 
The one guy that can get separation and stretch the field decides to leave an offense that was already challenged…well, this sucks.

Getting separation only matters for the first game of the season against a cupcake because that's the only time any of our QBs will be able to hit a deep pass. Might as well not have anyone who can get separation and then use what would otherwise be a deep shot to run a stretch play to the short side of the field on second and 9. Third and 8 is better than third and 9.
 
Loved Jones but he is replaceable. If he thinks the grass is greener good for him. Thanks for the memories.
