Charlie Jones in the portal

Loved Jones but he is replaceable. If he thinks the grass is greener good for him. Thanks for the memories.

If Ragini is the guy doing the replacing, i'm not super stoked. Nothing against Ragini, he has a role, but being explosive ain't one of them. It is a blow, when you lose one of the few dudes who can make plays in space.

I don't think he even needs a bigger stage, just more volume. Iowa was ranked second in the country for a brief period last year until we absolutely shit the bed against Purdue and left a fucking mess worse than the bed of that drug addled fiend in the documentary Seven. The shit was thicker and more disgusting than the bathroom in Trainspotting. Do you remember that game? Guh.

Anyway, I doubt he's gonna wind up somewhere that is ranked 2 or higher next year. Hell, he'd be better off going to a MAC, CUSA or MWAC school and putting up 90 catches than staying at Iowa and getting 3 looks a game. He's already established return tape against solid D-1 competition, put him on a pass offense in a warmer environment where he gets 10 looks a game so he can show he can play the slot consistently and he'll get some NFL looks.

Yep, Purdue could be a landing spot but if Jones wants a bunch of targets there are much more pass happy teams in the Big 12, Leach is at one of the Miss. schools, and some Pac12 or teams out west.

Actually, Purdue needs to upgrade their running game to really be a challenger for a Big title. The last 6 games of a season can be in some lousy weather in the Big 10 so that running game helps.

Ragaini has made some great plays for the hawks but he is more of a down the hash, slant, quick sit down route runner that moves chains. Jones seems to be faster and his return moves proves he can get a lot of YAC. I hope KJohnson and Bruce can stay healthy and play faster.

I think Leach is at Miss State. That would be a good landing spot if they have room on the depth chart for a slot guy. He'll get to go up against Bama, A&M, Auburn, Georgia and LSU to showcase what he has against the best of the best in the collegiate game. Probably will get a nice paycheck as well. Can't fault him if that is where he goes and will definitely cheer him on every game except against Bama.

Well what I meant by stage was more reps and targets and volume pretty much as you mentioned. Not the team itself. If BF and Petras had a more potent/aggressive offense that'd be one thing. Our top 5 WRs last yr combined for 105 catches. How anemic is that? We don't even try to feature a good player at that position. We just situationally try to hope they can make a big play when needed.

I agree with going down a level and maybe get that kind of volume. I doubt if he goes anywhere else in the BIG that he'll get 5 plus touches a game either in the offense. Assuming that's what he's looking for anyway.

Why do you think he waited so long though? He could have jumped at the end of the season. Or even at the end of spring practice.
That's the 64k question that maybe involves $$? I wondered the same thing. If not even prior to spring ball this yr what's happened or changed? I guess that arbitrary date of when guys have to transfer by is just that. Sounds like since he's a 6 yr grad transfer he should still be good to play right away wherever he goes. I would think If I were him and leaving was on the front of his mind that I'd have been looking prior to spring ball even. But that's just me

The timing makes it seem the 'transfer destination' was already a done deal before his announcement.
I'm guessing he was offered by a team (with much more $ to offer) that needed someone with his skills to upgrade their roster.

Always hate to see a kid transfer, and wish him well if he thinks there is a better opportunity for himself.

My only issue is that nothing has changed since he announced he's coming back earlier this year (same QB's, same coaches, same offensive scheme). So instead of transferring after the bowl game, he probably just took a lot of reps away from the younger WRs in spring ball, that could have helped them get better, and he used up a scholarship for the spring that could have went to a walk on player.

I didn't know until today he and O'Connell were classmates in grade school together. Also, Milton Wright, Purdue's number one receiver, was ruled academically ineligible for the year and currently not on the team. You add that with wanting to get more touches and you understand why there is a lot smoke around Purdue.

Apparently, Notre Dame may have some interest as well.

I think almost any school would love him to return punts and kickoffs. I just hope the hawk ticket office, Athl Dept marketing people didnt pour a bunch of money into printing Charlie and his name on jerseys on various print material, tickets (if they even use paper tickets anymore), an other merchandise.

I am sorry to see him go because he was just a very good hawk player, electric at times. He wants to take his juice (did you like that electricity pun) to another place

That is pretty anemic for your wideouts in modern day college P5 football, but remember Kirk throws a lot to the TEnds and Rbacks so that is where a lot of catches are, and yet still anemic at whatever low ranking our offense had.

For a kid like him to have ND sniffing around that'd be a tough thing to say no to for him I would bet if they offered. Be curious to know how true it is. They have a new coach now so that's interesting but it's still Notre Dame. Purdue has Brohm and that guy is an offensive guru. He obviously has Iowa's and Parkers #s. He's just a good offensive coach I've respected the job he's done and was hoping he'd have left for greener pastures by now. Jones and Tracy could both get used more there than they ever woulda here. Is what it is.

oh screw Bama, What you cant insert "just kidding " emojis anymore?

Hey, OK4P, were you a Bama fan back when they stunk before Stallings had his short term good run and then they stunk after stallings when every coach they hired was like the litany of Nebby coaches since Osborne. Actually, Bama was Nebby before Nebby was Nebby!!!!!

Hell a couple of new Bama coaches never made it to the start of their first season because of some such type of indiscretion

They can just take his name off of them and pretend they are James Vandenberg jerseys.
