Brady Reiff cited for public intox....big deal, or no big deal?

Stumbling around in downtown IC is an invitation to get busted.

There must be a dozen other venues one can go and not draw attention to cops just looking to add to their quota.

The sophisticate upper-classmen types do their drinking in Coralville, the Cicero to Iowa City's Chicago.

One thing to remember about this situation is that Brady is of legal age to consume alcohol; not that it makes a difference. His body
Problem is, IF Kirk lets it go, certain folks (yourself possibly included) still go into attack mode. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

That said, suspension is wrong IMO. Then again, the arrest itself was wrong. That, or the law needs overhauled. You can be drunk in a bar, but the second you step outside you're breaking the law? Not right at all, no matter what pontification Gold wants to put forth.
James Ferentz was a repeat offender and never missed a game for it. I don't recall anybody complaining about it, either.

Actually, he missed his first season. But again, my problem isn't as much with KF--I'm pretty sure "arrest", at this point, will always equal "suspension" because of possible backlash--as much as it is with ICPD and the law in general. A guy can be drunk in a bar...but the second he steps outside he is subject to arrest? Doesn't compute, IMO.

Why not? Really just asking. In other countries where public intoxication is quite noticeable it's not fun to be around. Lot's of drinking/defecating in streets, robbery (both doing it and being robbed) and so on. Women getting grabbed in a drunken bar is to some degree different from being groped on the street. Usually in a bar there are employees there to handle the situation.

<<In other countries...>>

Yawn.

<<Lots of drinking/defecating in streets, robbery...>>

Happens here, too. And much of it is done by sober people. Your point?

<<Women getting grabbed in a drunken bar..>>

100% irrelevant to this situation. Unless you have inside info the rest of us don't? Pretty sure assault and/or sexual assault are not listed as charges in this case.

<<Usually in a bar there are employees to handle the situation>>

Again, relevance? He wasn't IN any bar when he was arrested. But, along that line, did said bar make any effort to call Uber/cab? And if so, why was Reiff not then waiting in said bar for said Uber/cab?

It's a crap law in the state of Iowa. I really don't CARE what the law is in East Wendorf or South Nahavia, or whether or not you witnessed the public intoxication in such locales.

That was a thoughtful response.
OK look at SF now.

For his 2nd offense, all he missed was part of spring practice. Didn't even miss a game.

The decent thing for the cop to do was give him a ride home, and after he gets him home, tell him he's not an Uber driver, and recommend that he never does that again. Lesson learned and the cop has a good story to tell.

I'm fairly certain that would probably be against department policy and a huge no-no to give rides. People would cry favoritism, what if he got into an accident or the cop got called to something dangerous and had to drive high speed, etc...

I don't have such a huge p[problem that he got a ticket, my issue is that some people in the media and on this board think it's such a huge deal. Let the kid move on, he's already pretty embarrassed I'm sure.

Y'all could probably tell, but my biggest problem is that Kirk thinks it's a pretty big deal.

Kirk gives zero fvcks. None. But he has to act like he does. MSU is in line for a 9 figure payout because of Nassar. PSU suffered untold damage from Sandusky. OSU is getting raked for something now, too. What that does is makes it so schools have to make examples out of minor infractions so they can tell their "stakeholders" that all is good, and "oh, don't worry guys, we run a tight ship. Why just last month when that football player had too many beers and was out in public, we brought the full weight of the student code of conduct down on him and nothing bad will ever happen here." It's all just a song and dance. It's like sensitivity training at work, just there for appearances and to look good to a court later on if the institution ever gets sued.

So, you're saying that if James Ferentz were to get his second public intox in this era, he would actually have to sit out a game?

Probably. At least a half or whatever Reiff gets. The compliance apparatus has substantially tightened in the past couple of years. Not sure what the punishment for using Section 8 housing would be, though.

Kirk has no wiggle room on this anymore. Yes, If James Ferentz were busted now, he would serve a suspension, too. Times have changed. It's that simple. I don't agree with it, as there should be some discretion based on the circumstances, but days of discretion are pretty much over.

Let's be honest, Kirk has all the wiggle room he wants. He could put all his kids, wife, in-laws, and cousins on Iowa's payroll and I'd still be the only person that would give a shit.

No. I give a shit. I'm glad that he had that nice run from '02-'04, gave us those great memories in late '08&'09 and I thought '15 was great. But the family just has a different moral code from mine and that's a big reason I don't particularly care for him.

Back when I was in college, my roommate went on food stamps and told me I should as well. No. My parents taught me that stuff was for the really needy and it came from taxes and taking that stuff so I could work less or buy dope or booze with my extra cash was akin to theft. My old man just turned 66 and his biggest complaint is that he's another year closer to full retirement age on Social Security, but he doesn't want it because he doesn't need it and is pissed about how it will be a huge burden on the younger generation. I think this is a fairly standard moral code of Iowans.

The Ferentz family has demonstrated they do not share this moral code and I find it detestable.
