Brady Ellingson (New Offer) Class 2014

Ingram and Meyer. The issue is you look at this kid and think in a couple of years he might be able to take Ogelsby's spot off the bench. Is that the first verbal you want?

Ingram was a miss, but I think it is to early to call Meyer a miss. Besides every team team needs role players that will stay in the system for 4/5 years.

You assumed that I thought Marble was an elite athlete when I said nothing of the sort. I simply said we need to keep adding athletic backcourt players. I completely disagree about Marble being one of the less a athletic players on the team. You think any of the other guards hit fadeaways with a hand in their face? It's not like Marble makes his living at the 3. You think Gesell throws it down over Sampson III? Clemmons is probably more athletic. Gabe as well. Maybe, maybe Basabe. Don't see it from anyone else.

I'm sure Iowa will be fine. Fran is a great coach.

The dunk over Sampson III that is one athletic play you can point out. The fadeaways...really, he does it against guys he is 4 - 6" taller, I would hope he can hit that, it is an advantage and a smart shot because he knows he can hit it. Marble guards any wing in the Big Ten and it is ugly, have you watched? Why is it Oglesby can look better on defense against an offensive player that is far more athletic, but Marble doesn't?

We can talk about athleticism all we want, but honestly, it is just an attribute of an athlete, it doesn't make the player. I do believe Iowa needs an upgrade in athleticism, but it has to be the right player, not just getting a guy because he is a higher level athlete. Is athleticism important, yeah, but not the end all to everything.

Clemmons, Gabe, Basabe for sure are more athletic than Marble. I am going to wager that Uthoff and Jok both are as well, so I am saying he is somewhere in the middle. However, I think Gesell is very athletic, but wasn't able to show it completely as he did not let the game flow and was thinking a ton on the floor last season. He was very impressive athletically when I watched Iowa against Michigan in person.

Iowa really needs a guy that can shoot the ball, I don't care if he is athletic or not, if he can make a shot I am fine with it. Here is something that I was looking at last night. When you search Ellingson, he is compared with Tyguone Greer a seemingly, athletic kid out of Chicago who is a Top 150 player. I guess they didn't see the video that was posted.

Ingram put himself in a hole by not coming in being in shape. From there he battled, not sure he is truly a miss, but on paper he is because he left.

You can develop strength, skills, understanding of the game, etc. You can't make a guy who can't jump be able to jump or a guy who lacks athletic ability become athletic.

I agree teams need developmental players. But, they have to be missing something that can ACTUALLY be developed.

Beyond that, the statement that you need guys who will stay in the program 4/5 years is silly. The best players don't. Everyone else does. Walk-ons are practice fodder, not scholarship players.

The bigger problem is guys that don't contribute significantly by their third year. Strong teams don't have those types. There are just not enough scholarships available.

I agree with most you say here, except for understanding of the game, if you have problems grasping concepts that are basic to most, you never will by the time you hit college.

I don't buy in that you have to have 4/5 year players, but if said player has a niche, then they probably will be 4/5 year players.

Players can be developed, but as you say they have to have something to develop to begin with.

Ellingson is going to decide in the next week, he was at Iowa yesterday.

Per Mark Miller on twitter Fran has a new offer out to Brady Ellingson. Guard out of Wisc. Rivals has him listed at 6'3'' 175lbs. Offers listed are Albany, Drake, Northern Colorado, Oakland, South Dakota, S.Dakota St., UC Davis, and now Iowa.

Seriously? That is our competition and he is deciding in the next week? That would be okay if he was deciding to walk on at Iowa or take a scholarship at one of these other programs. But come on.

This is like lowering your standards in asking someone to the prom and getting an "I'll have to think about it." response.

Didn't Colorado make the tournament the last two years?

We are obviously on our second tier guys. Ellingson didn't have an offer until we missed out on the guys we really wanted. That isn't a good sign, but it isn't the end of the world either. Many programs have to shift to the 2nd and 3rd options (even Kentucky). The problem is that Kentucky's second line guys, are our top tier guys (Ulis) That is just reality.

Know little about this recruit but do know our BB coach should be given the benefit of the doubt on talent assessment based on what we have seen at this stage in his career at Iowa. Look at the offers on this "2nd tier" guy...............

Scout.com: Aaron White Profile

By the way, Ellingson has a recent offer from Missouri.........NCAA tourney team for the last 5 years.

Almost leaning towards banking at least one or two of these schollies for 2014, making a tournament run this year and then going after a loaded class for 2015 mixed with a great juco/transfer or two. Just feel like for us to now start taking that next step in recruiting we need to show we are a top 25 team with a win or two in the NCAA Tourney. Having a lot of freshmen doesn't scare me as much as it would in football. The really good basketball players can play just fine as freshmen.

As discouraging as it would be to have to take a pass this year, I am starting to agree with you. Why clutter the roster with sub-par talent that tie up schollys for 4 years. We saw how that works with Ingram and Archie. It is clear that we have failed to land any of our original or even second tier guys at this point. Ulis, Harris, Barnett, Cunningham, Law have gone another way. Now Lindsey has bailed. Not a big fan of Ellingson or LaChance. We could end up with Clemmons as our only american black player next year with Gabe and Pete being Africans. I know it bothers people when I bring up race, but I fear that it gets harder to recruit black players with a roster full of white guys. Everybody wants to feel comfortable where they attend school, and between the state demographics, the student body, and then the roster....lets just say some recruits might not feel comfortable being outnumbered at least 10-1 in every group listed. All white teams rarely win the big ten.

How the **** is Gabe African?

Ok, Gabe is a Londoner, whose parents came from Africa. You know what I am saying....not American born African American. I like Gabe and Pete. I am just saying that a Tyler Ulis or Josh Cunningham might not have much in common with guys from London and the Sudan as they would with Clemmons from East Lansing.

How in the world did my post about banking schollies and having a solid tournament run to impact recruiting turn in to we have too many white guys therefore can't recruit good black players? Kids want to play for winning teams, no matter color. We just need to show we are a winning program again!

Pete has been in Iowa for 10 years (so since he was roughly 8 years old), it's not like he just got here.

Have to agree with CaarHawk, this certainly is a bit disappointing given how active the staff was on the AAU circuit all summer. We appear to be down to our 2nd tier guys with 0 in the fold from 1st tier group. Said it before and I get hammered, but if the staff ends up with multiple kids with offers from Drake, Northern Colorado and UC Davis type schools, then he needs to cut ties with somebody and get a big ten caliber recruiter on the staff. First year coaches at lower profile programs are getting commitments, but we are not. Again, big McCaffrey fan, just don't think anybody is a good enough coach to break into the top half of the big ten without 1-2 next level kids (not saying NBA 1 and done, just next level kids).

Curious why so many think we are in a position to bank scholarships for the next class. The staff has been in place for 3 years and racks up some nice salaries and travel expenses to being falling back to Abrahamson (last year) and Ellingson this year. As we have seen with JO, a shooter has to be on, or they are a liability, due to limited athleticism. I was hoping this year we would push through the project player profile and get at least one kid with legit D-1 offers, but it seems we are not there. Banking would entail you can do better next year and thus far I am not too confident. Clearly Ingram was a reach and I fear the same for Meyer based on what I have seen in the PTL. The other recruiting blog site or whatever it is listed a zillion guys with Iowa offers, but nothing has materialized from 98% of them, so not sure how accurate their info is.
