Brady Ellingson (New Offer) Class 2014

Have to agree with others that this one is a head scratcher. If it were late in the game and others had spurned us, maybe. Offering a one dimensional kid this early makes me cringe a bit. In today's game, a kid has to be lights out from the perimeter if he is going to log minutes because it goes without saying the lack of athleticism will create a problem defensively. Was hoping to have someone in the bag by now (not Ulis necessarily), but we will have to wait and see.

Keep singing your praises on how Fran doesn't have a clue about recruiting...keep it up Ted, rock on!!!

I get what you are saying, but until Fran misses, we have no reason to doubt him.

I think Fran has his eye on a couple of them Harrison Barnes juco types for the spring.

Just saw on 247sports that Ellingson is going to be doing an official to Iowa tomorrow. Looks like it is his only official he has set up.

Also saw on the twitter feed that he plays AAU ball with Riley LaChance. Maybe that has something to do with why we are recruiting Riley now.

Oh joy sounds like a real keeper here. Sounds like Fran getting desperate.

I don't think Fran is desperate yet, but he has to fill a few of the scholarships since he can't just keep banking them or he won't have a team to play with. I would love to see us get a more athletic player than Brady, but it may be Fran believes he can open some doors to Wisconsin by bringing him into the fold.

Hate to question Fran, but this kid does not look like B1G caliber. Think it's clear this is a fallback. We really need to start stocking the roster with more athleticism if we want to make the jump and consistently finish in the top half of the conference. Lots of role players and glue guys, but really need some guys who can create on their own. Who else are we after for '14?

I think Iowa is going to be just fine...ffs

Bad timing for the instate talent to be drying up now that Iowa is on the rebound. But Fran has not swung and missed to many times in his recruiting and there is a reason why so many mid majors are cinderella stories in March as they are getting solid 4/5 year players that play hard and stick with the program. Every program needs a few of these types of players.

Ingram and Meyer. The issue is you look at this kid and think in a couple of years he might be able to take Ogelsby's spot off the bench. Is that the first verbal you want?

Not a difference maker, IMO. Not likely to get many minutes. And this could be a problem for Fran that he faces going forward. He likes a deep roster and he plays a lot of players due to the style of BB (similar in tempo to Tom Davis). I think it could be a problem attracting top flight, out of state talent. Those types don't like sharing minutes.
Just thinking out loud, so don't jump my case. I am not doubting Fran, because he hasn't given me any reason to. I'm trying to put myself inside the mind of a top recruit, rather than a rabid Iowa fan.

I have no issues with Ingram or Meyer, not sure why anyone would actually. If this is player is the first verbal, then I am okay with it.

I'm just not for bringing in kids on 4/5 year scholarships that you have to recruit over to be successful.

If you can't get a B1G caliber high school player, go JUCO so the schollie will come open sooner. Or, go for a more raw player with more physical potential.

The days of Brommer, Cougs, and JR Angle type recruits should be over.

Now, it might be that this video is just radically deceiving.

Exaggerate much? Did I say anything like that? I made a comment based on the video and the fact that Iowa needs to add a different type of player than Brady. Marble will be gone and we need to add some athleticism in the backcourt. Do you really disagree with that?

Well, we will just disagree here I guess, you have to have players on your roster that develop. Unless you are a dominant program you will always bring in players that the fans question. If he comes to Iowa is a minimal contributor, doesn't get in trouble, stays eligible and graduates...I have no issues. There are more than one guy on the roster and if Fran finds a hidden gem or three, maybe this is one of those.

Based off of a video.
Why do you think he isn't that different type of player?
Can he shoot, if so, I am good with it.
I am not exaggerating, it is funny to see the views that people discern on one video.
Does Iowa need some athleticism, who DOESN'T?
If you think Marble is an elite kind of athlete or anywhere near an upper echelon athlete, then you haven't paid any attention to his career. Marble does better at point and not at wing because of his size, not his athleticism. His lack of athleticism is why he can't play on the wing. If you want more athleticism, then you have to think that Iowa has to get better athletes than Marble.

If you think I am dissing Marble, I am not, it is reality. He is a good player, no doubt, but not a guy that I will say Iowa misses because of his athleticism.

Come on. Again with the assumptions and putting words in my mouth. I don't think Marble is an elite athlete, which even further proves my point that we need more athletic guys, but if you can't tell Marble is far and away more athletic than Brady than you're either blind or dishonest. I think Fran has done an . Amazing job thus far, but why did you jump on me when I pointed out something that is clearly obvious? And if you're being honest, you can admit that Brady looked pretty underwhelming against what was clearly poor competition. Does that mean he won't be a good player? Of course not. But it's fair to question the offer based on the obvious. Especially considering we missed on some of our primary targets and the fact that we have no one in the '14 class. Well, maybe not...

Let's see, what assumptions did I make and what words did I put in your mouth?

You make an observation on one video, I am thinking we better tell Fran right away about this video as if he hasn't saw it, he would probably pull the offer.

My point is questioning off of a video. Watch him in person and see what you think.

I didn't say you think Marble is an elite athlete, but you threw him into the conversation and I really think he is one of the less athletic guys on the roster, he knows how to play the game, that knowledge gets him by. If a guy like Basabe or Olaseni had his BBIQ, they would be scary.

Question it all you want, but I don't think Fran offers kids that are fall back, he may offer late, but based on the interviews of recruits the Iowa staff does their homework on players prior to offering. That is why I believe Iowa will be perfectly fine if Brady comes to Iowa.

You assumed that I thought Marble was an elite athlete when I said nothing of the sort. I simply said we need to keep adding athletic backcourt players. I completely disagree about Marble being one of the less a athletic players on the team. You think any of the other guards hit fadeaways with a hand in their face? It's not like Marble makes his living at the 3. You think Gesell throws it down over Sampson III? Clemmons is probably more athletic. Gabe as well. Maybe, maybe Basabe. Don't see it from anyone else.

I'm sure Iowa will be fine. Fran is a great coach.
