BoneG's sullied image when it comes to basketball officiating

Included in the links Jon Miller provides elsewhere today is a column by his friend Rob Howe entitled Howe: McCaffery Management. In it, Howe repeatedly suggests that the reason the BoneG suspended Fran McCaffery following Sunday's outburst at Wisconsin was to protect its own image: "The Big Ten is stepping in here hoping the admonition defends its character and prevents further storms from McCaffery. If it doesn't, the league looks even more justified in its action to suspend him now."

If that's the case, and I believe Rob to be correct in his assessment, then I submit the conference has a deeply sullied reputation when it comes to the officiating of its basketball games. It is well recognized by fans around BoneG country that the conference protects a handful of its prima donna coaches, namely Bo Ryan, Tom Izzo and Thad Matta. Add in an occasional dose of Tom Crean but those three appear to be the chosen children, the preferred ones, the more equals among equals.

Ryan, Izzo and to a slightly lesser degree Matta are allowed to work the officials much harder than other coaches in the conference with impunity, often with results favorable to their teams to the detriment of opponents. That includes emotional outbursts, running onto the floor to argue calls, wild gyrations when calls are or are not made. And yet rarely are those three coaches given a technical foul, much less a second technical and ejection.

Did Fran deserve a first technical Sunday night? Absolutely. As he said, he wanted it to express unhappiness with the way the game was being officiated and to motivate his team. When he continued to berate the officials and move towards one specific official, he deserved the second "T" and the ejection. I fully supported Fran going ballistic seeing the lopsided way the second half was being called in Madison. The only problem I had was him moving menacingly towards the officials, not once but twice, even as he was being restrained by his staff and after he was ejected and before he left the floor.

Had he simply said a few more words but stopped, then turned and walked away, he likely would not have gotten the suspension.

If indeed the conference is interested in protecting whatever "integrity" it thinks it has (and I submit it has very little), it has set the bar for the remainder of the season. Today it has a chance to prove whether it is actually serious, or whether Fran McCaffery is simply an easy whipping boy.

If the BoneG is truly interested in preserving its "reputation," Jim Delany will today order a review and appropriate punishment for its most favored son, Tom Izzo, for his behavior rushing onto the floor, wildly gesticulating and loudly berating the officials in last night's game against Ohio State. Not only did Izzo's actions very visually and publicly demean the officials, but he did so verbally as well at halftime. Supposedly there are rules against that.

Izzo just being Izzo? Or Izzo once again being protected by his good friend in the commissioner's office?

Jim Delany, the ball's in your court.

excellent post

Seconded. I had these same thoughts as I watched the game last night. I really didn't know if Izzo deserved two technicals but he certainly deserved one. I also disagreed with his assistant touching the ref on the shoulder like "it's ok, just let this slide".

I'll submit that when Fran has gained the reputation and level of accomplishment and tenure in the BoneG that he will get the same treatment as Izzo.

Sorry but we're not in a vacuum, favorites exist, relationships exist, building up goodwill exists, winning titles and making Final 4's that make the conference look good don't get outweighed by actions in one game.

Time to start living in the real world and worrying about ourselves and what we can control. The proper thing to do is hope that Fran learned from this, accepts reality, and adjusts his behavior accordingly. If he (and we) don't accept this then we're going to look like babies and Henry Hediditfirsts.

First of all, excellent read by the OP. I wish Delany would read it but we all know that is not going to happen.

*sigh* (I cannot believe this)

But I agree with cliche, the way the league is run and how the officials call the game is completely out of our control along with Frans. We can cry foul all we want but nothing will change the fact that Fran got 2 technical fouls, got kicked out, suspended, and losing to Wisconsin by 4 points. Fran needs to play the hand he was dealt and do whatever he can to help his team win, watching the game on TV tomorrow is not helping his team win nor is giving a team like Wisconsin 4 points. He needs to understand he is a marked man now and be more careful. When he has accomplished what Izzo has and has built those relationships then he will get the same superstar treatment Izzo gets.

Negative behavior should be met with negative consequences. Coach charges out on the floor should be met with immediate Tech.

Let the players be the stars not the coaches.

The coaches can work the officials while standing in the coaches box and during timeouts.

Have you noticed that Izzo and Ryan, the coaches who get to do all this whining, also have the players that whine after calls and these coaches play mugging defense and get away with it.

Letting these coaches have preferential treatment spills over to their players and affects games.

I have been perusing other B1G teams message boards the last couple days and to my surprise a large majority of posters are defending Fran's actions and glad he went nuts in the Kohl Center. The last fanbase I would expect to defend Iowa, the Illini, are for the most part on our side.

Other teams fans have been saying they want every coach whose team is getting a raw deal up there to act just like Fran did and maybe it will draw some attention to the screw jobs that go on up there.

I will be interested to watch the Wisky/Illinois game tonight in Madison to see if the game will be called anything different than the norm up there.

Fran has to coach Fran's way. He's had success everywhere he has been including Iowa. He has already been quoted as saying he regrets the 2nd T and the ejection, suspension, negative publicity for the university, etc. If he feels he has to get a T and give up 2 points to get a fair shake, give his team the best chance to win in his opinion or whatever then I'm fine with it...2nd T was the exception not the rule.

I hope Fran continues to coach the way he has throughout his career and during his time at Iowa. I hope he gets a T the next time he thinks it's necessary in his professional opinion. Fran, Iowa basketball and Iowa basketball fans don't have to take a back seat to anyone. Fran has the platform to make a statement...favoritism to the home team, certain coaches, etc. I sincerely hope he continues to make these statements moving forward. No pain...No gain!

Edit - There is another thread about Izzo last night. Reference is made to the fact that no one is going to be on Hawkeye Nation to see what we think about Izzo's preferential treatment. This is true. Fran is the only public voice we have and I hope he continues to use it. Someone may eventually listen or better yet someone else may jump in and join him in the fight.

Honestly the 1st technical was not the killer, it was the 2nd. Had Fran only gotten 1 technical perhaps the last minute would have looked completely different.

All I want to see from Fran is being under control. It was that 2nd technical is what I had a problem with. That does not mean I want Fran to change how he coaches nor do I want him to stop jawwing at officials. But I want him to give his team the best chance to win and this means not giving up points or him being in the locker room.

Whoa. Maybe Iowa fans aren't just a bunch of whiners. Interesting tweet from ESPN's director of basketball recruiting, the former head coach at Wright State and assistant at St. Louis, BC and Ohio State:

Watched the Iowa / Wisconsin game this am .Who monitors and holds the officials accountable for all the bad and missed calls? #Nextgame$

Contenders losing benefits Iowa so I will be pulling for Illinois but that's the only reason. However, I expect Decker to have a huge game and Wisconsin should win easily IMO.

Gotta question this guys basketball cred. Even my mom knows the answer to that question is no one.

BIG officiating is the worst. Watched the ISU vs Baylor game, and they lost a ref to injury and did a 1000x better job with 2 officials in that game than 3 blind mice did during the OSU vs MSU game.

Wow..another thread ******** about the refs.
Everyone in the country complains about bad officiating. Everyone. That is the norm nowadays with social media.
Get over it. People have been saying the same thing for as long as I have been watching the game.

Read some the fans comments when two other teams are playing. Go to their message boards threads for the game and read both teams. Nobody is happy. Complaints from both teams' fans.

IZZO, Matta and Ryan have better players than Iowa. That is how they win all the time. We need to recruit better players. Then maybe other teams' fans will complain that the refs are favoring Iowa.

I just know there has to be some conspiracy theory that explains everything.
