BoneG's sullied image when it comes to basketball officiating

Iowa is averaging 14 fouls per game at home and 21.8 on th road this year. Considering who we have played away, that should tell something.

It just proves that teams get more calls at home. This is pretty universal really, and like all other teams, Iowa gets the benefit of the calls at Carver, while Wisconsin gets them in the Kohl center, etc.

Perhaps my opinon is flawed becuase I do officiate high school basketball and I know when I officiate I miss some calls but it's not because I'm favoring a team or even give a crap about the outcome. The truth is I agree that Big 10 officiating is not always great... what I don't agree with is that the officials are inentionally favoring a particular team. I think that questions the integrity of the officials and as an official who openly makes many mistakes... it's not because my lack of integrity.

I do not think they are doing it intentionally either but you can show favoritism and not even realize it. Emotions are part of the game and when you have the home crowd on you it is possible it can subconsciously affect the way a game gets called. Along with a coach, who you may or may not respect, but your relationship with him could play a part in how you call a game whether good or bad. If officials were robots then this argument would go away but the fact of the matter is officials are human and whether they do it intentionally or not emotions can play a part.

Fran has to coach Fran's way. He's had success everywhere he has been including Iowa. He has already been quoted as saying he regrets the 2nd T and the ejection, suspension, negative publicity for the university, etc. If he feels he has to get a T and give up 2 points to get a fair shake, give his team the best chance to win in his opinion or whatever then I'm fine with it...2nd T was the exception not the rule.

I hope Fran continues to coach the way he has throughout his career and during his time at Iowa. I hope he gets a T the next time he thinks it's necessary in his professional opinion. Fran, Iowa basketball and Iowa basketball fans don't have to take a back seat to anyone. Fran has the platform to make a statement...favoritism to the home team, certain coaches, etc. I sincerely hope he continues to make these statements moving forward. No pain...No gain!

Edit - There is another thread about Izzo last night. Reference is made to the fact that no one is going to be on Hawkeye Nation to see what we think about Izzo's preferential treatment. This is true. Fran is the only public voice we have and I hope he continues to use it. Someone may eventually listen or better yet someone else may jump in and join him in the fight.
Excellent post! Couldn't said it better than you.

Look... I hate to do this because it is part of a private message that I wrote to somebody but it's probably the best way to recap my feelings on the entire situation...

In regards to Fran, against UNI... I felt we were getting screwed and absolutely applauded his outburst becuase I felt it was just and the timing was right that it didn't affect the outcome of the game. Sure there were some bad calls against Wisconsin but that comes with basketball and I just didn't feel the same way as I did that UNI game and I do feel that the technical fouls gave the players an unfair shake and hurt the team's chance of winning.

Fran has done enough for our program that although I don't disagree with his decision making that night in Madison, he has my full support moving forward and it changed nothing about the way I feel for Fran. He is the right man for this job.

Anyways.... that's where I'm coming from.

So no I'm not anti Fran... I simply disagree with one decision he made but the good he has brought to this program far outweighs this one bad decison.

Being a high school referee would give one a different perspective. It is somewhat a thankless job.....

Finally got the nerve to watch the ref job against Wisconsin. For those of you who DVR'd the game..check the 11:30 mark in the first half when Wisky hits a 3. We come down court with the ball..do yourself a favor and just watch Olaseni the whole possession and then watch the phantom call on him. I hate to beat a dead horse and I'm over it, but it's just a prime example of the ref job we took Sunday

I know Iowa won last night but I seen some calls I would have really been upset had it been a close game. Post players are not allowed to play defense at all, they can stand there with their hands straight up and still get a foul called on them. I seen it again last night and I think it is getting out of control.
