Beth Mowins?

I agree with DMLadyHawk, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. But sometimes our opinions are being shaped by factors we may not be aware of at a conscious level, and that can be helpful to know.

I wouldn't have said anything a year ago. But having a daughter makes you start thinking about this stuff a bit more. I have also heard a few female sports media members as podcast guests (Doris Burke, Rachel Nichols, Stephanie Ready, Erin Andrews), and while they all try to downplay having to deal with the sexism as just part of the job, hearing some of the crap they go through makes you think.

BS, throwing out the sexist label every time someone disagrees with a woman has to stop. She is terrible, her voice is annoying....not because she is a woman, it just is. I believe that the only reason she keeps her job....is because she is a woman.

Agreed...

OK, I'll agree that sexism, racism, et. al., still exists. That doesn't change the fact that Beth Mowins is NOT a good "listen". But when you bring Erin Andrews into it, sorry, I gotta call it. Talk about someone who uses both sides of the "sex" debate! And talk about someone whose "talent" is based less on what she "knows" than how she "looks"?!

There are tons of female commentators, play-by-play announcers and sports anchors. I can think of, oh, maybe 50 that are more "defendable" than Beth Mowins OR Erin Andrews.

And I don't know about you, but MY daughter can pin her success to hard work, an ultra-competitive nature and a desire to succeed. She doesn't need to play on sexism OR blame others IF she doesn't succeed. Although I don't really know, given that she has been a success at pretty much everything she does.

So basically, you're right..and anybody who responds otherwise is automatically wrong. They're just not enlightened enough to realize it.

Yeah, you're "that guy" alright..you fit today's PC model to a T. There is only one approved viewpoint...and it's mine. Period. All who disagree are the problem.

I'm pretty sure he didn't say that. If you don't like her insights or don't like her voice as an announcer, I get that. But any time she announces a game, it comes up.

There are both male and female announcers that drive me nuts and it tends to be on ESPN. I certainly get that. I'm just glad we have games on TV to watch. In my younger years half of the games were on TV. I'm not complaining. Those that do, it's all good. Cry me a river. My 2 cents

NOOOOOOO! I might as well just watch the game without any sound. She constantly misses play calling and substitutions. She is always sidetracked and off topic, thus adding nothing to the game.

It's not just Mullins but her entire production crew seems to suck. At least 2 years ago it did.
Maybe it changed since then. The graphics suck and are full of mistakes, the analysis sucks. It is like ESPN put all its B-grade, no, F-grade performers on the same team.

I guess I haven't really followed her career too closely. As a podcast guest, she sounds very knowledgeable and passionate about sports, especially college football. Can you give some examples of how she has taken advantage of the "sex debate"? I can't recall her wearing provocative clothing or acting anything less than professional.

You can try to raise your daughter to be hard-working and to take responsibility for her own successes and failures, and at the same time recognize that the playing field is not level and advocate for disadvantaged groups. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. It is easier for us to do this as men because it is less likely that someone will say, "there you go, pulling out the sexism card again," since we [men] are not in position to directly benefit from such advocacy. If a woman tried to say the same thing, she would attract all kinds of criticism.

And just because there are individuals out there capable of succeeding in the face of obstacles, who just accept those obstacles as "the way it is" and kick ass anyway (e.g. your daughter, the above-mentioned female sports media personalities), that does not mean sexism shouldn't be addressed. That sounds a lot like the Erik Trump, "My sister wouldn't allow herself to be sexually harassed" argument, ultimately putting the responsibility on the person who is already at the disadvantage.

Oh please..Erin Andrews got her gig because of what she looks like. She is terrible at what she does and has an annoying voice. Plenty of good women reporters out there. She is not one of them.
Who in this world hasn't had to deal with some "crap", man or woman? Very tired of the "poor me, I have had to overcome so much" attitude many have. Work hard, treat others with respect and be thankful everyday that you are lucky enough to be living in the greatest country in the world!!

I'll admit Erin Andrews doesn't have the most pleasant voice to listen too but she usually asks good questions, she's also more knowledgeable than most give her credit for.

He stated his opinion and then immediately attempted to preempt and invalidate any dissenting responses (before you give me the standard response, you may want to examine yourself. Translation: you're probably not as enlightened as me)...so yeah, he kinda did. Take another look.

Whether or not you like Mowins or any other announcer is personal preference. But please don't give me that knee jerk victim's response that every critique of someone is because of their race/gender/etc rather than simply the way they act or perform. Equality includes the possibility of being both praised and criticized.

For those raising daughters -- I think we as a society should promote the belief that girls/women can choose any career and succeed at levels equal to men (at least). We should raise our girls to believe that, then go out and conquer the world.

But, if I could ask for one compromise -- if your daughters are going to become football announcers, please teach them not to pronounce "yards" like "YAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDS." That's my only complaint about Mowins.

Thanks

Beth Mullins is about as good as any other play by play announcer. And you have to give the mother ship some credit because they have a lot of women now doing games, on sportscenter, etc. Plus minorities as well. Used to be a network of mostly white guys and now they've made the effort to diversify. See nothing wrong with that.

No, I really didn't. I simply asked people to consider a few things. That is very different than invalidating anyone's opinions. If you don't want to consider the facts I presented, that is fine. But please don't claim that I am trying to shut down opinions or discourse, when I was actually trying to do the opposite.

I do agree that it gets into a messy area of, "can anyone from under-represented groups actually be fairly criticized without accusations of blank-ism?" That is a tough one to work around. The best we can do is to try to be as objective as possible in assessing any individual vs. their peers, and to try to make ourselves aware of ingrained biases in these assessments in the process.

Back to the specific topic of Mowins: a quick look around the interwebs shows a broad swath of people being hypercritical of her (see links below). Maybe that does truly mean she is inferior to her peers? Or maybe there is something else at work? Each person can take in the data on their own and make their own judgement.

Amen... That's probably the most annoying thing about listening to her call a game to me. My humble opinion of her isn't very high in the sense that she does nothing but annoy me when I try to watch a game she calls. I can't be wrong about that can I? It's an opinion. It's like someone preferring to watch football instead of a WNBA game called by a male. I'd rather watch football it's what I prefer and like. Now Mullins calling the Iowa game would never prevent me from tuning in. I love my Hawks I watch to keep up with them. So I'll tolerate her and survive just fine. But if I'm channel surfing any other week and she's calling a game between two teams I could care less about I sure wouldn't tune in very long and would continue surfing...
