Basabe vs White

Please explain what is poor about my assessment? He uses his feet poorly with the ball. He was called for one travel and could have been called for a couple more. Glen Worley esque. He is out of control and got bailed out on some charge calls. Go back and watch the game again.

He couldn't drive around Will Artino

He finger rolls everything, which I hate as a bball fan. It's weak. Royce White finger rolls as well and its going to bite him in the *** come Big 12 play.

How many games have you watched of White? Did you see him at the PTL? What about any high school film?

I can only assume you've seen him just the one game vs. Creighton (please correct me if I am wrong). That didn't show much.

He has a high skill set.
He can usually beat other 4/5s off the dribble. He can pick and pop. He has great range and can hit the three. He's normally a very good shooter from the field and FT shooter. He is terrific at the top of the press with his long arms. Very good passer for his height. Really nice BB IQ, as well. He's scrappy, as well.

Desperately needs to work on his defense and D rebounding. He has a LOT to work on, but his base skill set at his height is terrific.

He also needs to forget about his debut as a Hawkeye.

This is a very poor assessment.

Lol,
I don't know what a lot of people were looking at besides the score. I watched the game again last night. Knowing the score I mainly focused on the individual play of the two freshman. I was impressed with White's energy and some of his moves and quickness around the basket especially for someone who has only played in his fourth game in college. The same is true for Oglesby. Both of the kids are going to be very good players as they get more experience and get familiar with Fran's system. They both will greatly compliment the recruits coming in next year. It's also good to see McCabe coming along.

The only complaint I have about the game was the officiating. Creighton got away with hand checking, pushing, and hard bumping the whole game without any fouls getting called.

A loss can be constructive if the players learn and improve from it. I expect that to happen. We will eventually be fine. We are not there yet but we are on our way back. GO HAWKS!!!

Please don't tell me you are using high school and PTL as your examples Stormin? You are better than that. Brent Barz scored 25 a game in the PTL. Sean Haluska use to take the CCL by storm

He won't beat any 4's and 5's in the Big 10 off the dribble. He couldn't beat Wil Artino off the dribble.

Scrappy? Scrappy means: not good but plays hard

I'm telling you, he is out of control and has poor footwork. A lot of off balanced shots for him and travels. Save this post please.

So, no, you haven't seen anything else besides the one game. Is this correct? Have you seen him in person?

HS and PTL are just a few very small ways to judge a player. I can only go by 2nd hand information on those two. I am using those just as examples in the fact that I don't think you seen enough of this guy to make a judgement on his skillset.

If I am wrong on that, please correct me. Please.

Being scrappy has nothing to do with talent, it has to do with energy and a willingness to put yourself on the floor and to get inside a guys jock if need be. Cramer from Purdue was scrappy, Russ Millard was scrappy, Jeff Moe was scrappy. It has nothing to do with talent, it has everything to do on how a player plays. You can be VERY talented and still scrappy.

But I've seen White in person and I have seen him in every game this season. He plays like a freshman at times, but he has a lot of the tools to be a very, very good 4 in this system. He hasn't tapped half of his potential.

Scrappy is just a term people used for awkward white players who play hard. When somebody tells me a player is "scrappy" I instantly think the guy stinks.

You are right though. I've only seen small videos of White as well as the Creighton game. Unless there is some underlying talent I am missing, I just don't think he can play the 4 in the Big 10. I think he will play fine against some scrub non confernece teams but when the schedule picks up he will look lost. His shots will get blocked and he will turn the ball over at a high rate, with a lot of charges.

That's my opinion on White as of now. Hopefully I am 100% wrong.

Reggie Evans is/was scrappy. He's not awkward nor white. Same thing could be said about Joakim Noah. The same thing can be said about Dennis Rodman.... Etc... There are plenty of example of scrappy players. If you don't like that term - use the term "hustle", "high energy", "hard worker", whatever... I think you get my point.

White has not been very good as of late because he is forcing it too much. Give him time and watch him a little more. He's got the skillset to be very good.

Just don't use the term spark plug or pepper pot. I hate those.

I agree with you Spank the local clone troll is way off base with his assessment of White after the Creighton game.

Using the PTL and even HS clips can have it's flaws for evaluation but so can an evaluation from a one game snapshot.

He'll either be good or he won't but you can't dismiss a freshman this early in the year.

forget it spank, talking to a couple of clown fans about Iowa player is futile
no matter what board i read it is the same, to slow to sloppy will get there heads handed to them on a platter against good competition,
haven't you learned by now only good to great players go ISU or anywhere but Iowa, there arecyclone putting Woodbury and Gesell down as being to slow and unathletic to be able to play in the BT
just walk away and ignore the clown fans

Aaron White over Basabe? Really Hawkeye fans? Aaron White is AWFUL. Did we watch the same game yesterday? Wait until he plays in the Big 10. They'll destroy him. Basabe has things you can't teach. Size and athletic ability.
Go troll somewhere else. At least White has some fire. Basabe read his reviews and decided he can mail it in. White is 18 for god sakes and he gives all he can with limited experience. Your post is typical of a clone troll.

Your opinion is mostly wishful thinking of a cyclone fan. BTW he is a thee not a four.

He was the MVP of the Kentucky Ohio allstar game which featured a bunch of high major players.

The guy is 6'8 with guard and forward skills, three point range, and good passing ability. How many times do guys with that sort of skill set not turn out to be good?

Is this your first time watching college basketball, freshman who do not struggle are the exception, especially in their first four games.

Allot if not most of them struggle as underclassmen because of a lack of strength and then their last two or three years they end up being very tough matchups.

In fact I will go as far as too say that with his skill set it will be nearly impossible for him to not be a major contributor by his junior year.

Herkyattack - I have fact and solid evidence Mel has been called out in practice on more than one occasion recently. Wouldnt have posted what I posted if it were only a rumor / etc.

Still want White to start over Basabe? Does everyone still think Basabe is going to transfer, or that he should get benched?

Great post. Id like Mccabe over white too only thing is that white is way, way better.
He's a bigger body and finds ways to rebound the ball. He'll play regardless of his athleticism until someone else can do what he does on the boards.

Basabe has progressed well both offensively and defensively from where he was earlier in the season.

This team as a whole is playing much, much better. If only they had 1 or 2 more guys that could hit an outside shot consistently...

The future looks bright for the Hawks.
