Basabe vs White

Very slow, very awkward, very poor use of his feet with the ball, weak going up, to many finger rolls, low ceiling

You also talked about how bad Cartwright was last season after the first few games.

Slow - Nope. He gets a pretty decent amount of steals for being 6'8 and is pretty effective on the press.

Awkward - Sometimes. Doesnt really matter.

Weak - Shot 6 free throws yesterday so he must be taking the ball to the hoop.

Low ceiling - You're an idiot.

I talked about how bad Cartwright was all season last year and am still saying he isn't very good. I haven't changed my tune.

White is slow. He couldn't drive around Will Artino yesterday. Artino stepped in front and cut off his drive twice. As for the 6 free throws, you have to give the kid credit for attacking the hoop but he will get called for a lot of charges if he keeps going in there the way he does. Plus his FT shooting? Yuck.

Listen, I've watched and attended more Iowa basketball games than I'd like to admit. I follow the program and cheer for them much more than I do the football program. I am just saying what I see out there.

I think Miller hyping up Aaron White has given some Hawkeye fans blinders on his skill level. He plays hard and his really long but thats about it. Be a nice guy to have come in for 5-10 minutes a game to help with energy

This may seem petty but Basabe seems like a bad teammate and I partially Blame Fran for constantly tooting his horn. Start paying attention at the free throw line. I haven't seen Basabe acknowledge anyone when they attempt to slap hands after a missed free throw. I love the cocky and I love the swagger but not at the expense of the team. He is young and will learn. I am going to call my shot, both Basabe and Marble suffer from the dreaded sophomore slump.

God I hope not as that would make for a long season and another losing season

Come on give Iowa fans a break! The last game changing PG Iowa fans saw was Woolridge and Oliver. Since then Iowa has not really had a PG who could get to the lane pretty much whenever he wanted.

Cartwright is probably an average PG if you compare him to the top 30 teams in college basketball (I think Iowa and ISU should aim to be top 30 teams). It's not like Bryce is a guy who can get to the lane whenever he wants, but he gives Iowa something that no one else on the team can offer and that is a guy who can acutally dribble drive and draw some defenders. Right now Cartwright probably gets slightly over hyped just due to others around him having such glaring issues in the dribble drive game.

As for white I have no idea how good he will become but if I had my choice I like 6'8 guys who can shoot from the outside and put the ball on the floor a little bit. It's not like he will take a lot of guys to the basket but I think he will be able to get around some 4's if they follow him out to the perimeter. White just has more of an all around game and might be a great guy to plug a hole on a good team. It would be nice to be able to get 15-18 solid minutes a game out of him.

Watching better teams play in these pre season tournaments really shows Iowa lacks that stud PG and stud wing player that teams need. In a half court set Iowa struggles to create shots against teams not named NCA&T, Norther Illinois or some of those slop teams Iowa will play.

White is good. He's just getting his feet under him. Give the kid a few games before you judge him.

Iowa needs Basabe to play like he did last year or better to even sniff a winning season.

Someone should point out to the young man that playing like he is, is going to be a sure ticket NOT to play in the NBA.

I am so far removed from the inside of Iowa bb that I have no idea what is going on. Just disappointed in his play so far.

Exactly, what position does Basabe play in the NBA?

It really doesn't matter until we get somebody who can fill what Jarryd Cole meant to these guys last year.

This...this is what they are missing still on the court. I have yet to see a true leader emerge on this team since Cole left. I do not see anyone currently on the team that CAN fill this role. I hope I am wrong, but until that person steps up and dose it, we will have a few more nights like sunday.

It is clear this team is still building and finding out who they are. If coach feels that Basabe needs a wake up call I am sure he will do it. Out of any coach in Iowa BBall history Fran is the one to do it. With as much passion as Fran shows on the side line I highly doubt he would tolerate or coddle a prima donna.

I gotta tell you guys, I see Basabe as more of a Doug Thomas sixth man type. He has limited offensive moves, is undersized, isn't great defensively, can't really make his own shot...

He is basically a garbage scorer and outlet scorer.

Remember when Matt Gatens was on the all frosh team? Remember when he didn't make any all conference team after that?

Remember when Eric May was on the all frosh team? Remember when he didn't make any all conference team after that?

Well, we are right there again with Mel.

Decent freshmen play on bad teams. Great freshmen play on good teams.

this is reminding me of the Payne/Stokes years; Payne had a good fr campaign then kinda fell off; Stokes not so great a fr season but finished strong, Basabe good fr season, so far this seasoin not so good
McCabe so-so fr season and is having a better season
will McCabe put up #'s like Stokes, probably not but he is putting up better #'s and a better effort;
plus McCabe can shoot the 3

as for White people are ready to throw him under the bus because has not put up #'s like he did in the 1st game in the next 3! WOW, white is good but not one and done good;
give him a break there are still a minimum of 27 games left to this season plus 3 more seasons to go before the final judgement to be made, hopefully Fran can get Basabe to show up;
Gee this team played one bad game against a good team and lost, nobody in their right mind expected a perfect OOC slate
get over it people they will get better and win some games and lose some
this as got to be the most bi-polar fan base in the country

This is a very poor assessment.

Please explain what is poor about my assessment? He uses his feet poorly with the ball. He was called for one travel and could have been called for a couple more. Glen Worley esque. He is out of control and got bailed out on some charge calls. Go back and watch the game again.

He couldn't drive around Will Artino

He finger rolls everything, which I hate as a bball fan. It's weak. Royce White finger rolls as well and its going to bite him in the *** come Big 12 play.
