Basabe tabbed as B1G 2nd teamer

sullinger says basabe can guard of

I think this is regarding the NBA level and his ability to get drafted.

Basabe couldn't handle going against guys like Kevin Love, Zach Randolph, Gasol, Blake Griffen, Amare, Dirk, Garnett, Bosh and Duncan on a nightly basis. To think otherwise would be naive.

BTW: the 1st time we played them Sullinger had 24/12 which was better than his season avg.

The 2nd time he had 13/9, but we were out of the game by halftime. We were obviously giving them the outside shot considering they attempted 21 3's that game.

I wouldn't exactly say we shut him down.

you forgot to mention the five blocks. BTW I'm shocked a 19 yr old kid can't handle the most elite of in the game, of course who can?

Were the 6 blocks all against Sullinger? I don't recall? To put things in perspective, Brommer had 3 blocks in the second game against OSU. Does that mean he is instantly qualified to guard NBA centers?

Basabe is a decent college player and may find himself as a situational role player in the NBA as a small forward if he continues to develop. I really don't see him evolving anything more without a perimeter game. At 6-7 and 225 he is undersized to play inside on a regular basis in the NBA. At best, he is basically a poor man's version of Terrence Williams

he's at least 234 now

Yeah and at his natural position he'd be going up against:

Love: 6-10 260
Dirk: 7-0 245
Garnett: 6-11 253
Blake Griffin: 6-10 251
Amare: 6-10 240

He's maybe 6-7 with his shoes on and he has no bulk like Love and Griffin. Unless he can learn a perimeter game he has no chance in this role.

That site is retarded. It has Iowa as the 143 best team in the Country and last for all BCS schools. They have North Texas ahead of Iowa.

How is he anyway comparable to Terrance Williams? Williams was an extremely good ball handler and passer in college, Basabe is obviously neither of those things. He's a very good, garbage player on offense, not a guy you can run your offense through.

If you want to make a comparison for Basabe I would say he's a poor man's Hakim Warrick or Stromile Swift.

Keep in mind, people WANT to believe Iowa basketball is back. So they will come up with ridiculous predictions and delusional opinions of players to make themselves feel better.

That's sometime I've noticed between this site and HR.

Very comparable to ISU football, to be honest.

How bout we just let Mel play 3 more years in college before we start projecting him in the NBA. Sometimes guys that are not typical size can find a spot in the league if they have a skill, like Reggie Evans or Paul Milsap.

I just love the fact that everyone seems to assume he won't develop physically or won't develop his game. I agree that the Mel we saw last year wasn't an NBA player. He didn't have thec body or the game. Unlike you I realize that he was 18 years old (he didn't turn 19 until after the season). He's certainly going to add weight (reports have him adding about ten pounds already) and I think he's going to make huge strides in his game.

Is it a stretch to say he's NBA material? Sure, but I know two things....

1) He's one of the most driven kids I've ever met.

2) He has some physical tools Iowa hasn't seen in a big man, tools that would serve him well at the next level.

Bottom line, he's the kind of kid who can end up 6-8 6-9 240+ with a seven fosters reach and plus hops. He's already got a one dribble drive game, and if he adds a face up jumper from 15 he's going to be a nightmare to defend.
