APNewsBreak: Critical audit another blow for Iowa athletics

Can the U afford NOT to let Barta go at this point? I would think there is a certain threshold and he's gotta be straddling that at this point.

The BIG 12 is a mess and may not be around in 5 years. Some have called Bowlsby out (Finebaum) and call the commisioner of the BIG 12 a mess. Anyway, would Iowa bring him back as AD again before the 12 collapses? Could that happen? I guess I wouldn't be imposed to it.

That might be hard for one man. Lol we have 40,000 employees with 117 offices across 38 states. I'm not sure 1 single person could even make a dent in the Des Moines loss per year.

Okay, for $500,000 I'll try and be more realistic about my chances.

In and of itself, this report wouldn't be a huge deal...but in conjunction with the Meyer law, the cumulative effect of these blows will matter.

Indeed. Did you hear Meyer's lawyers start salivating when they heard the news about the audit? They couldn't wait to include it in their case.

"poor management" got several Iowa sports brand new facilities and the media rights alone are well over $45,000,000 per year. If "poor management" means the university has to payout a disgruntled employee a million bucks and loses a few ipads per year...I can live with that. Take away Kirk and Fran's contracts and you're still up well over $35,000,000 this year. thats a pretty easy pill to swallow
Gary Barta had ZERO to do with that 45 million in media rights. If your argument is that he is good at soliciting funds, put him in charge of the Alumni association and give him a cell phone.

So barta has ZERO to do with the media rights, but its ALL HIS FAULT that a few ipads are missing? ok

Barta hired Fran and Heller. Big wins in my book. Ipads and an extra $500 charge on a credit card? Lets freak out!!!!

This is a strange argument. Why can't there be both new facilities and no lawsuits? You can't take away the contracts from a management discussion and be doing an honest evaluation of management. Also the audit of IT department is less than ideal.

Barta also is responsible for hiring Lickiter, who Iowa had to buy out for $2.4M after three miserable seasons. Iowa paid him $3.6M for those three miserable seasons. $6M for the Lickliter gaffe.

My point was related to the firing of Gary Barta which people seem to badly want. Obviously Barta screwed up in the dismissal of Meyer, no doubt about it. It's a black eye on the department. However, under Barta the U of I athletic department has also gotten a number of brand new facilities, a revived basketball and baseball program, and is generating more revenue for the university than ever before in the history of the school. IMO the good still outweighs the bad and its not even close.

And I'm not even a Barta fan. I think his Ferentz buyouts have been ridiculous and the Lickliter signing was a gross overreaction to the Alford situation.

Maybe I'm a bad person, but I struggle to care about any of this, including the Meyer lawsuit, when the Iowa Athletic Department is bringing in over $45,000,000 alone in media rights per year

I'm in the same line of thought. Other than the "bad look" for Iowa, I find myself not really caring that much.

My sister, over the last 25 years, was a head coach for a small private school in Iowa, an assistant coach for Creighton women's bball, Head coach for a D2 school in Minnesota, an Associate AD and fill in head coach for a major D2 school in Florida, and a Head AD for a small college in Oregon. She also happens to be happily married to a woman. I say all of this to give context that she probably identifies more than most regarding all sides on this matter. I've talked to her a little about all of this, and while she isn't a huge Barta fan, she had some interesting opinions on how he was likely getting a raw deal, all things considered. She also stated she doubt he survives this. She has seen bigotry and old boy cronyism up close, has plenty of connections (in the past) to Iowa athletics, and says this is all being wayyyy overblown. She is one of the people I respect most in this world, she loves Ferentz and how he handles things, received her Masters from Iowa.

Barta is likely done, but, all in all....I feel the same way my sis does on this particular subject....meh. In her view, if Meyer wasn't gay and/or a woman, in this exact scenario, it'd be an absolute non issue,

I've rambled, apologies. I have massive amounts of feelings on the overall macro of this general topic, but not on this particular situation. Get if over with and be done, one way or the other.

The only way Bowlsby comes back is as Roberta...

True, and i'm no huge Barta fan, nor a hater, kinda indifferent in honesty, but at the time it didn't seem like a bad hire on paper, and he did fire him as well(no, I give him no credit for that as it was a no brainer)....but he did hire Fran, which at least appears to have been pretty solid thus far, with a ton of promise. I think Barta likely has to go, and i have zero problem with that. I simply want the replacement to be well thought out, and hired for the correct reasons, whatever those are.

I think you have to weigh the entirety of his performance as he would do for those he supervises. There is plenty of good and I hate to see anyone lose their job. I just think that the recent negatives are so negative that he won't survive. We'll see.
