APNewsBreak: Critical audit another blow for Iowa athletics

Your beating the wrong war drum. This report was sensationalized to fit the slant of the author. It's open season on Iowa right now. The investigation was done by bean counters who would have been just as sharply critical if 1 cell phone was unaccounted for. Sure it shows a little dereliction on inventory management, but I work for a fortune 500 company that eats a whopping 4 million dollar loss every year from unaccounted for parts, tools and merchandise. I'm not saying it's great, but I don't see it as noteworthy considering that other more probative investigations are likely coming down the pipe. I suggest to thicken your skin.
We'll see. More evidence of poor management in my opinion. Not that we need more evidence.

Questionable practices, left his job....report was sharply critical

People tend to get out of dodge when when they feel the heat coming on their job and it makes sense to me that the IT guy headed for greener pastures. Everybody wants to underplay this aspect but one way or the other it doesn't help the perception of the Iowa athletic department. It also doesn't exactly help Iowa in the appeal process should it go that route especially on the unequal pay claim bringing in Taylor. The athletic department needs to clean house and start fresh in every aspect of its operation. Barta will likely take the fall and deservedly so IMO but the problems go beyond him.

For a mere $1,000,000, I will come in and eliminate 75% of that $4 million loss. :D

Maybe I'm a bad person, but I struggle to care about any of this, including the Meyer lawsuit, when the Iowa Athletic Department is bringing in over $45,000,000 alone in media rights per year

"poor management" got several Iowa sports brand new facilities and the media rights alone are well over $45,000,000 per year. If "poor management" means the university has to payout a disgruntled employee a million bucks and loses a few ipads per year...I can live with that. Take away Kirk and Fran's contracts and you're still up well over $35,000,000 this year. thats a pretty easy pill to swallow

How much longer are you forecasting those kinds of payouts continue?

certainly not forever with the way the cord cutters are going, but how many other major universities wish they had the kind of revenue the University of iowa currently has? 80%? More?

That might be hard for one man. Lol we have 40,000 employees with 117 offices across 38 states. I'm not sure 1 single person could even make a dent in the Des Moines loss per year.

Plus...are these even real scandals? Iowa hasn't been cheating, beating women or molesting children. They've made some idiotic bureaucratic mistakes. We aren't Baylor, or Penn State. We haven't had an academic scandal like UNC.

If only the State and national governments had that kind of proportional poor management.

People will swallow a camel and gag on a gnat.

No. This isn't even on the same Richter scale as PSU or Baylor. It might be on pretty even footing with UNC. I say that because I don't know a lot yet about what UNC is fully being accused of. If I had a scandal rating scale this scandal would be solid 6. I am concerned about violent aftershocks though. Further investigations are probably not in our best interest. I guess only time will tell.

Academic fraud for 18 years involving between 3,000 & 5,000 students & student athletes.

While that number seems large in plain text, it is actually a small ratio over an 18 year period. That is like 1 semesters enrollment. Not trying to marginalize the issue, just looking big picture. Since academic cheating goes against the very fabric of what a college exists for, I would say UNC's scandal is probably worse.

I think a case can be made for Barta, but he had zero impact on those media rights. Shouldn't even be part of the conversation with him.

There's no context here whatsoever. Why did they go up 43% in one year? Was there an overhaul of hardware?...
I can shed some light on this - they updated the computers used on the jumbotron and digital signage - how do I know? I bought two of the old ones @ UI surplus. The boxes I purchased were AOpen digital engines from circa 2007. They still had athletic department tags on them.

Gary Barta is responsible for the Big 10 media rights? Every school in this conference is swimming in cash.

Very true, but it also brings to light how out of perspective college athletics are compared to real life.

barta is responsible for missing iPads the same way he's responsible for the media rights

I agree that it is a lowly matter for the top dawg, but we all know when the bottom catches fire the top gets burnt.
