This is hysterical. The absolutely most average state in the nation arguing about which parts are better! Classic.

Iowa is a nice place. It is hardly stunning in most areas, but for Iowa parts of it look pretty. SE Iowa has some very nice drives and a number of towns have higher family income than small towns in other parts of the state. It is generally a long way from areas of a lot of culture and a lot of activity. Now sure I'd live in the NW where I'd have to go to a park to see the tree, but the sunsets are terrific. Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Waterloo and some smaller SE places are about as close in income and crime as Decatur, IL (I think I caught all areas). Ft Dodge isn't a great place to romanticize about, but it is home to a number of people who love it.

Iowan's I've noticed are quick to diss other states, especially to the south, when in fact there isn't a lot of difference, except actual cities and the ozarks, which actually is pretty. Goofers like to joke about Iowegians and how they'd give Iowa their bottom row of counties....well you know the story.

Iowa is a very nice average place. Enjoy more the KF please. I didn't notice it wasn't sexy when I grew up there.

February 23, 2011Not a place to live with smell in the air

Ottumwa Courier

OTTUMWA — Here I sit, a native-born Ottumwa east ender, so ashamed to invite friends, relatives and business associates to our home because of the terrible stink coming from Cargill. I grew up one block from Morrell’s in the 1950s, so I’m not a newcomer. In fact Morrell’s did stink but didn’t seem as bad as these businesses do now. Why isn’t hog killing done out at the air base where the other businesses operate? Get it out of the residential areas so we can breathe without gagging.

I believe this is one of the main reasons our population has continued to drop. Who wants to live and work in that environment?

Eddyville doesn't smell a whole lot better.

What makes ppl want to live in the state of Iowa anywho? One of the worlds unsolved mysteries.

I was born and raised in Iowa but moved out of state after graduating from U of I.

I think Iowa is an excellent place to raise a family and a pleasant place to live.

If it were not for a substantial deficiency in white collar jobs, many folks that grew up there and moved away after college would have stayed.

Too damn cold and nothing to do. But that's just me.
