Andrew Francis Tweet

I remember hearing that Iowa has more miles of road than any state in the US......

They are ranked 11th with 2 states behind about 200 miles. Iowa has about 113,800 miles of roads. About 10% behind Missouri and 20% behind IL. Texas blows everybody off the road.

Iowa is cheap with the limestone roads. It's also a health hazard not talked about. You don't really notice until you come back and visit. My kids laughed once when they thought we were on an Interstate that had tractors on it, but it was the 4 lane west of Waterloo.

Missouri has some kind of paving of most all rural roads as does IL. The few in IL that are not are for sure not limestone. Not sure what someone was thinking, but probably some farmer road commissioners.

Andrew Francis, I will never forgive you for what you've done. Twitter titillation is uncalled for and unforgivable. Good day sir. Close thread.

Kirk Speraw was far from a "failed head coach." He was at Central Florida for 17 years, won 20 games 6 times, and took them to the NCAAs 4 times. Also, he went through a span from '02 to '07 where he had four 20 win seasons in five years, and two trips to the dance. Better than Alford during that span.

Didn't he also have to vacate a bunch of wins at UCF and was fired in disgrace?

Don't forget Ft. Madison. Ever look at a map and wonder why that SE corner isn't in Misery? Besides the logical Des Moines River thing.

I'll take SouthEast over SouthCentral, SouthWest, Western and Northwest any day. That capital "L" or perhaps block capital "C" on the left side of the state ain't exactly paradise. It starts at Ottumwa and loops clockwise around to Ft Dodge. With perhaps an extension Eastward from Ottumwa that narrows down to the point at Keokuk.

Ottumwa must have taken away his tweeting privileges. Or Fran.

Nothing on his account since that Tweet, despite many inquiries.

Sounds like something very personal, which should not be submitted on Twitter. I have avoided Twitter like the Bubonic Plague, although I tried it once, as I have mentioned before, and I have two friends, Yoko Ono and Bill Gates......

Annnnnnd.....let the analysis continue!!! Go.

May some university of higher learning include this thread as part of the class on Modern Social Media gone wild.

Beginning with AF's tweet (assuming it was his) and the later "retraction" and the so called discussion of assistant and associate head coaches at Iowa BB.

What really is the great comedy is the dissing of the dissing of Iowa small towns.

Be it Burlington or Ottamwa, Fort Dodge or Fort Madison, Keokuck or Marshalltown...

what up with all these self-some haters? And all you diss respectors of some roots?

You all need to be much more specific about some bad... and tell us about all the good about growing up or living in a "small" town in IOWA.

Outside of the university towns and Des Moines, all Iowa towns are pretty much equivalent.

So wrong.

Drive along the old Highway 34 on the southeast corner of Ottumwa, and tell me the smell and the view is equivalent to any other town in Iowa.

You may be right but try some town in Missippii or west Texas or the Kentucky hills or some god forsaken dessert of Nevada or Utah.

You tell me what small town in America you want to live in... go ahead I double dare you.

I agree .. except the location I'd choose is northeast Iowa. The drive from Decorah through Marquette and into Dubuque is stunning, especially in May and October.

GO HAWKS!!!

Ottumwa Courier

OTTUMWA — Here I sit, a native-born Ottumwa east ender, so ashamed to invite friends, relatives and business associates to our home because of the terrible stink coming from Cargill. I grew up one block from Morrell’s in the 1950s, so I’m not a newcomer. In fact Morrell’s did stink but didn’t seem as bad as these businesses do now. Why isn’t hog killing done out at the air base where the other businesses operate? Get it out of the residential areas so we can breathe without gagging.

I believe this is one of the main reasons our population has continued to drop. Who wants to live and work in that environment?
