Amani Jones Targeting Call

Agree completely, plus the WR hopped right back up and was fine. The pussification of football has swung too far the other way.
The NFL is unwatchable for me, because of how much they protect the offensive players, out of greed first and safety second. I know it's an old joke about putting QBs in skirts but you might as well. I can't watch it any longer. If NCAA football becomes like the NFL, I'm done with it. I'll walk away just like I did with the NFL. It's not entertaining at that point.

Wait a second. Are you insinuating the NFL put in all these rules to protect the quarterbacks to avoid losing money if a big name gets hurt, and not because they care about the player's wellbeing? That's nonsense!

Single biggest reason why I don't watch much NFL. They might as well put red jerseys on the quarterbacks during the games for how little you can touch them.

If the nfl was truly concerned for player safety they would get rid of Thursday Night Football. But, more money to be made.

I commented in the live thread on Saturday. It was refreshing to see a quarterback get tackled cleanly just after releasing the ball and have no flag thrown.

But they did review it and confirmed the refs were wrong. Can be reviewed, but not officially overturned

Where was it confirmed by the conference upon review that the officials were wrong in their call? I didn’t see this, but maybe I missed it.

He made no attempt to wrap up. He was leading with the helmet and shoulder. The guy was defenseless. The days of trying to separate the ball from the receiver are gone. Not gonna win this one.

Wrap your arms around him and he's probably OK. Iowa makes a habit of not wrapping up. May not have been a technical targeting situation, but the intent was there. It was a high hit.

  • Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area No Launch
  • A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground Detectable crouch. Not a lot but it was there.
  • Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area Helmet and shoulder were leading and the helmet level was the same as the neck. Matter of inches.
  • Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet. Intentional or not, it looked intentional.

Make proper tackles and this won't be an issue.

Maybe it's an indication of why he has been in the dog house.

You just never know - but this could work out in Iowa’s favor on Saturday. By all accounts, Indiana is a throwing team, not a running team. Welch is better against the pass, and it may lead to keeping Hooker at an OLB position and bringing Stone in as the other safety. The net gain is better pass defense, at the expense, probably, to the run defense.

It is Indiana’s passing game that scares me, not their running game.

With Welch, Hooker and Colbert in at LB, I think we will have a lot more speed to cover the Indiana passing attack than we traditionally have with our standard 4-3 alignment.

In ISU's last 2 games, there have been 3 targeting calls that were all reviewed, and the flag was picked up and no penalty was assessed. In at least one I think it was textbook targeting, in another the hit was so violent I'm shocked they picked it up. I just think we all have no clue. The rule needs to be more black and white.

It was the football equivalent of a basketball flop...and it worked. The receiver laid their momentarily...crowd reacted...refs threw the flag...player jumped up. Big Ten basketball officiating at it's best.

His helmet was to the left side of the player. He didn't leave his feet. His shoulder squarely struck the player's right shoulder. The player was trying to catch the tipped ball (they had already caught 2 tipped balls that day). It wasn't targeting, but it was a very hard, righteous hit. However, both are illegal these days. One is on the books, the other isn't. They'll need to understand that.

Iowa has tackled a lot better this year.

I don't think Jones is anyone's doghouse, otherwise he would not even be on special teams. I thought his play was quite good on Saturday - he's quick to the ball and is a good tackler. I think he was trying to do too much at first, which I think has limited his time, plus Hockaday has been playing well since he came in.

I missed this play in the game and I still haven't seen a good replay. It's only targeting if Amani hit the player in the player's head or neck (with his shoulder or any part of his body) or he initiated contact anywhere with his own helmet.

Wait until they start the "Hard Hitting Penalty", legal hits but just hard.
That's basically what it's already became. A subjective take from refs that decide if a hit looked 'too hard or not' their throwing the flag.
The only thing worse then not picking up the flag after reviewing that play is not over turning the suspension even further after the fact. I mean what are we doing here folks? If your going to have this ability to review plays and the rules are spelled out to the letter of what's legal and what's not then not call them correctly it just goes to show how inept these folks in charge are..

Here's the play ...

Wow. That’s a brutal hit. It’s tough to tell from that angle. It’s close to being too high on the player and it’s close to initiating contact with the helmet, even though neither of those may be the case. I can see why they didnt overturn the call on the field.

So basically there are no "big hits" any more. Anything that elicits a "wow" response from the crowd is by definition "roughing".

FYI ... This was reviewed but determined to not be targeting in the ISU-OSU game. That is the QB.
