Ali Farokhmanesh blames it on the fans

Funny how people nitpick your post and completely ignore what you're trying to say.
Yeah, I know. Frustrating. Thank you for getting it.

People freaked like I actually forced my wife to leave Iowa State. The truth of the matter is she continued to attend ISU for one year when we started dating, then decided to leave on her own, but I always joke that I rescued her from Iowa State. And, obviously I wouldn't stop my children from chasing their dreams academically or athletically, even if it meant going to Iowa State. It's just a fun way to tease my in-laws because most of them are Iowa State people.

But, again, thank you for being a mind of reason.

First of all, no one can tell you whether you are a fan or not. Mouth breathers on here will try to, but you have to remember the fraction of the fan base you're dealing
with on message boards. You shouldn't feel the need to defend yourself.
Unfortunately, it set me off in this case. Pretty hard to have a normal debate/conversation with people on here, but somehow I keep forgetting why I've never been able to post on a message board consistently.

Originally posted by DP 5555Second of all, I totally agree with you regarding your opinion on the fan base. I've been pretty embarrassed the last year or two. People get way to caught up in wins and borderline suicidal about losses. It's sad that most find it hard to see middle ground. Especially with basketball... Wisconsin went through a losing streak and now they are hot. Michigan went through a slump and they are about to win the B10. Iowa State went through a slump and they are back to playing good basketball. It can be frustrating to see fellow Hawk fans act so freaking deranged.

I'm sure there is some of this with every fan base, but I'm not a fan of other teams. I'm a Hawkeye fan, and because of that I notice it the most with our fan base. Maybe it's because I focus so much on the Hawks that I don't see how bad it is with other teams, but I sure feel like Hawk fans take the ridiculousness to another level.
Completely agree. I feel like we're dealing with a case of fanbase schizophrenia at times. People also forget that we're all Hawk fans here and we all want the same thing. But, Iowa is always going to be prone to these ups and downs, because we're not going to be a program that just kicks *** and takes names. Iowa - the program and the fans together - needs to assume that "us against the world" mentality and out-work people to be a consistent winner.

Why is it this day and age, nobody takes responsibility for their own failures? It's always someone else's fault for why you didn't succeed.

I don't know ... but it sure seems like we have a lot of people blaming the coach, this player or that player, the defense, the offense, the schedule, etc, etc.

Not that these people should take responsibility for the losses ... any more than they should take credit for the wins.

It's because we give kids a trophy and a blow job for ******* breathing these days.
The proper authorities have been notified.

Lol, wasn't one of the things Wisky fans hated Uthoff for was sending his GF in to give Bo his transfer papers?

Lol never heard that. Did his girlfriend come with him? Cause she's a golfer I'm pretty sure. I'd prolly do that too tho. Very scary man to tell you're leaving.

Perspective is a beautiful thing :)

My 2 cents.

1. Love hearing athletes with zero Hawkeye affiliation stir the pot and voice their irrelevant opinion.
2. There's obviously something going on in terms of the way Iowa is playing that is leading to the attitudes and outburst (whether just or unjust) of the fans.
3. Fans are like three year olds, they hate you one minute and then with the flip of a switch they're your best friend the next minute. It's more about fixing things from within to win the crowd back rather than worrying bout why they've turned.

Regardless, its such a small sample size of fans that are making a stink. It's really sad to pin it on or call out the fanbase as a whole.

It must be rough to be a big time college athlete. Go to college for free and pretty much major in playing a sport and you get blown by hot chicks all the time but every once in a while some a-hole calls you a name on twitter.

FEEL SORRY FOR THESE GUYS!!!!

Yeah I've said this on other posts on other subjects. I used to live around Iowa football players.

They are treated like gods.

People who feel sorry for D 1 athletes make me lol hard.

So you know me?

You know that I've been a Hawkeye fan since I was 5 years old? You know that I told my wife that she had to transfer from Iowa State if she wanted to continue dating me? You know that, even though it was a gift from my sister-in-law, I never allowed my son to wear the Iowa State jersey he got when he was a baby? You know that even my daughter, who is a toddler, understands that it's not OK to cheer for the Cyclones or, Lord forbid, attend the university. You know that I had two friends (one being my best friend) play football for the Hawkeyes? And, you know that the same best friend used to wear an Iowa State basketball hoodie when he was in junior high until I converted him? You know that I really don't have an NFL or NBA team that I'm even close to passionate about so the Hawkeyes are pretty much it for me?

You know all that about me? Or are you just basing your thought on an assumption because it's easier to do that than accept the fact that our fanbase is quickly turning into a bunch of whiny babies.

If you don't believe anyone has been upset until the last 3 games, you haven't been paying attention. Iowa fans, in general, have been ******** and moaning after every loss in basketball and football for the past 3 or 4 years.

It's gotten to the point where it is embarrassing. And, some of the attitudes people portray within this fanbase are completely disgusting.

I'm as hardcore Iowa fan as they come, I was just taught (correctly) not to get too high after a win or too low after a loss. A great basketball coach that I was very close to once said the only thing that matters is peaking when the tournament begins.

There's plenty of season left, and most basketball seasons, just like a basketball game, will ebb and flow with winning streaks and losing slides. Iowa has time to right the ship and be playing very well once the tournament starts. We've got a solid team capable of playing with anyone. The only two things that concern me about this team are that they really haven't won/put away a big game down the stretch and they're playing terrible defense.

But, it's certainly no reason to jump off the deep end.

No it's that you "think" you are a better fan or have more perspective than other fans and you get up on a pedestal and start preaching about what a true fan is.

Just the fact that you think that is a logical thing to do make me realize you don't have any perspective.

This basketball program hasn't done anything in a long time - we are finally starting to make a push and then it could fall apart at the seams..

People have every right to be upset and worried.

Also I really liked how your original post proclaimed some kind of wisdom or maturity you had that some fans didn't then the above post is pure year old material.

Another assumption.

If I'm not riding a roller coaster of emotions with each Iowa win and loss, it doesn't mean I'm a better fan, but the perspective is not lacking. I don't believe I'm a better or more passionate fan than the next guy, I'd just like to see some fellow Iowa fans handle the low points of the program/season with a little more class. Or reactionary negativity. I'd take either one.

I also don't make the mistake of assuming that I care more about the well-being of the football or basketball program than the coaches and players on the team.

Isn't that enough to be ecstatic about? Something that would keep any Iowa fan far, far away from the ledge?

Just a few short years ago, Iowa was a Big Ten bottom feeder that was scoring 50 points a game. The Hawks were completely unexciting. Now, Iowa is able to play and score with pretty much anyone. That excites me. This program has gotten back to being relevant and dangerous to anyone it plays. And, they're exciting to watch.

Has the season gone perfectly? No. Iowa should probably have at least 22 wins just by taking care of business down the stretch, but no season ever does go perfectly. Iowa still has a chance to make a run in the tournament, though, regardless of the past week's struggles. They just have to start peaking over the next couple of weeks.

Does it suck to see our team struggle like this? Yeah. But, it's no reason to lose our collective minds.

The whole entire point is that maybe we should be happy we're back in the position to be upset about consecutive losses to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Indiana when just a couple of years ago that would have been considered old hat.

It's a good thing there were never any negative newspaper articles wrtten about athletes and teams in the past. Boy, that could have been really awful.

Most of the same D1 players want paid for what they do...but don't criticize their play or they get bent out of shape.

uhhhhh ... no matter what, we are NOT penn state.
Not Iowa. "We" as in modern culture. Not literal, fawning over every little thing kids do, rewarding over and over for minimal effort and for "trying", not succeeding.

Not often you see a school's coach that looks and behaves like the school's mascot.

From Ali's Twitter:
Blame it on the Iowa fans. The negative attention via twitter etc. is having an effect on that team, no doubt. Dug this team a grave. 

What a joke.
Ali's showing that he was raised in Minnesota where this kind of thinking is accepted. If the players are so weak mentally that this is digging a grave when they've been taught over and over how to handle it then we as society are in bigger trouble than I ever dreamed of.
