Ali Farokhmanesh blames it on the fans

So you know me?

You know that I've been a Hawkeye fan since I was 5 years old? You know that I told my wife that she had to transfer from Iowa State if she wanted to continue dating me? You know that, even though it was a gift from my sister-in-law, I never allowed my son to wear the Iowa State jersey he got when he was a baby? You know that even my daughter, who is a toddler, understands that it's not OK to cheer for the Cyclones or, Lord forbid, attend the university. You know that I had two friends (one being my best friend) play football for the Hawkeyes? And, you know that the same best friend used to wear an Iowa State basketball hoodie when he was in junior high until I converted him? You know that I really don't have an NFL or NBA team that I'm even close to passionate about so the Hawkeyes are pretty much it for me?

You know all that about me? Or are you just basing your thought on an assumption because it's easier to do that than accept the fact that our fanbase is quickly turning into a bunch of whiny babies.

If you don't believe anyone has been upset until the last 3 games, you haven't been paying attention. Iowa fans, in general, have been ******** and moaning after every loss in basketball and football for the past 3 or 4 years.

It's gotten to the point where it is embarrassing. And, some of the attitudes people portray within this fanbase are completely disgusting.

I'm as hardcore Iowa fan as they come, I was just taught (correctly) not to get too high after a win or too low after a loss. A great basketball coach that I was very close to once said the only thing that matters is peaking when the tournament begins.

There's plenty of season left, and most basketball seasons, just like a basketball game, will ebb and flow with winning streaks and losing slides. Iowa has time to right the ship and be playing very well once the tournament starts. We've got a solid team capable of playing with anyone. The only two things that concern me about this team are that they really haven't won/put away a big game down the stretch and they're playing terrible defense.

But, it's certainly no reason to jump off the deep end.

Lol Idk if you guys saw this but White's girlfriend replied back to it and said: "I couldn't agree more... we have some rude people who consider themselves fans."

Typical girlfriend move. It's nothing more than mentally weak starting at the top and ending on the last player on the bench. If you can't handle criticism and angry fans dont play D1 bball. Simple as that. This is not anything a team hasn't seen before.

Funny how people nitpick your post and completely ignore what you're trying to say.

First of all, no one can tell you whether you are a fan or not. Mouth breathers on here will try to, but you have to remember the fraction of the fan base you're dealing with on message boards. You shouldn't feel the need to defend yourself.

Second of all, I totally agree with you regarding your opinion on the fan base. I've been pretty embarrassed the last year or two. People get way to caught up in wins and borderline suicidal about losses. It's sad that most find it hard to see middle ground. Especially with basketball... Wisconsin went through a losing streak and now they are hot. Michigan went through a slump and they are about to win the B10. Iowa State went through a slump and they are back to playing good basketball. It can be frustrating to see fellow Hawk fans act so freaking deranged.

I'm sure there is some of this with every fan base, but I'm not a fan of other teams. I'm a Hawkeye fan, and because of that I notice it the most with our fan base. Maybe it's because I focus so much on the Hawks that I don't see how bad it is with other teams, but I sure feel like Hawk fans take the ridiculousness to another level.

As far as the teams handling of outside criticism and the Twitter incident. It's easy for us as fans to say these guys need to suck it up. They need to block it out and play ball. WE AREN'T DEALING WITH IT EVERYDAY! These guys are young men with a tremendous amount of pressure on them, and they live and play basketball in a state that is a fishbowl. Don't judge them unless you know what they are dealing with. I'm guessing that weeds pretty much all of you out.

I know Hoiberg is Iowa State's coach. Which means most Hawk fans don't care what he has to say, but you absolutely can not argue with the fact he was an incredible collegiate basketball player. This was his response to how he would have handled these Twitter incidents if he had to deal with it in his day:

“I would not have been able to function with that when I was playing,” Hoiberg said. “I was so mental that I would have taken to heart everything that was said to me. It is too bad that that is the world we live in right now but it is what it is. You have to block it out the best that you can and try to play. I haven’t done that with our guys. I’ve talked to them about being careful not only with what they say and also with what they read.”

If Hoiberg said it would have thrown his game off then I have no reason to think it isn't capable of having a real impact on the performance of the Hawkeye basketball team. Certainly so with McCabe. He hasn't been playing great all year, but since that incident he has been downright awful. I'm sure for some people it is easy to block out the noise, and for others it isn't. I'm just saying none of us are in a position to judge the ones who may struggle with it because we haven't been in that position ourselves.

Any modern day NBA champion has to deal with way worse than what Iowa players have to deal with.

Sure it's rough in some ways, sure the pressure they feel is worse than what I feel (at least as far as fan pressure goes) but it boils down to you can deal with it and win or don't deal with it and lose. At the end of the day the excuses really mean jack **** because you have a loss on your record. Bottom line is everyone deals with some type of **** in life, some overcome it, some don't and use it as an excuse, an excuse that really doesn't get you anything except maybe a little bit of sympathy from some.

Lol, wasn't one of the things Wisky fans hated Uthoff for was sending his GF in to give Bo his transfer papers?

It must be rough to be a big time college athlete. Go to college for free and pretty much major in playing a sport and you get blown by hot chicks all the time but every once in a while some a-hole calls you a name on twitter.

FEEL SORRY FOR THESE GUYS!!!!

I think it's obvious that EVERYONE involved with this season is feeling the pressure.

You've got the head coach lashing out at a caller and telling him to go root for another team and now questioning if he's able to push the right buttons. You've got the starting center shushing the home crowd after a monster dunk on a fast break because he's tired of hearing the criticism of his athletic ability. You've got the team captain telling some meathead on twitter to "SAFO".

You've got fans turning on players, coaches and themselves.

This is the probably the expected reaction when you've got a program and fanbase that hasn't made the NCAAs in 8 years and hasn't won a game in the NCAAs in 13 years and then it FINALLY looks like the program is possibly going to do some historic things only to see it start slipping thru everyone's fingers. We're all gripping right now. Sunday COULD go a long ways to loosening the grip somewhat. Or it could simply just be another loss on the way to yet another March Situation.

I think this sums up the situation (no pun intended) pretty thoroughly.

It's like being a SR in high school tough.

Absolutely no one is saying they feel sorry for these guys. I'm not saying that at all. I wrote a book in that post, and not one place did I say I feel sorry for them.

I'm saying you can't relate to them. Neither can I. When we have no idea what kind of outside pressure they are dealing with we aren't in a rational position to either:

1. Tell them how they should handle it.
2. Act like we know what they are dealing with.

Now I agree, no matter what they are feeling they need to figure out a way to win. Every team deals with this type of stuff in one way or another. I'm not making excuses for them.

I almost skipped reading this thread, because I suspected that it would give a bunch of posters another opportunity to come back and blast the players and coaches for being immature babies; that no one takes responsibility for his/her actions anymore; that trophies are given to everyone; and, that anyone who is not highly critical of our players and coaches is enabling the team and making excuses for them. I also knew that there would be all kinds of personal attacks that don't address the topic but rather try to discredit those who post views you don't like. So, I screwed up and skimmed the first couple of pages. My apologies to several people who, although they disagreed with each other, kept it clean; I do not mean to lump everyone in this thread together.

That post wasn't directed at your post.
