Alford on Indiana Opening

Interesting to think that's it's been 16 years since the Alford to Indiana rumor mill started up while Alford was at Iowa. Maybe now he'll finally get his dream job.

If there's one thing that could get Bob Knight back on campus, this could be it. Of course it could also lead to Knight never speaking to Alford again

Indiana has been spending way too much money on football. He's not going to leave a basketball school for a football school. :)

As far as asking a personal question, I would expect personal pronouns. Like every other coach he's trying a cryptic answer about memories without telling his home state "no".

Indy AD: "I'd like to introduce the new IU coach, Stevie "Luke" Alfraud. He'll be mentored by Bobby "Darth" Knight. Welcome aboard fellas." Feel the dark side once again Hoosier nation.

Isn't ten years enough time to get over an ex-coach?

I know he was a bit aloof and we didn't get the wins we wanted but it's not like he was a Sandusky or Art Briles either.

Yeah but it's fair that he's a topic of conversation since the Indiana job opened up. Honestly I kinda hope he does screw over UCLA for the Indiana job, the crowd reactions in Carver might be fun when Iowa plays Indiana with Alford as head coach.

"...the greatest brand anywhere on the planet."

The guy is an absolute goddamn fruitcake.

Pretty narrowminded. Does Alford realize most of the people on Earth don't even know about UCLA basketball. Manchester United is a far bigger brand than this

Careful. Depending on who you talk to he allegedly blindly supported one of his players who allegedly had a serious run in with the law.

GO HAWKS!!!

UI see what you did there.

Indiana really wasn't anything before Knight, and they haven't been that great since Knight left.

Knight made them a national brand, and then they frittered it away when they fired him.

Silly! Iowa played the very first college basketball game ever in 1896 and has never won a National Championship. Indiana won 2 before Knight, under McCracken. Then 3 under Knight. They damn near won another under Crean. Indiana is either the 4th or 5th best basketball all time program. I don't want to give them credit either, but it's not possible to argue with history.

Crean never got IU past the Sweet 16. That's only a third of the way (2 wins out of the required 6). If that is "near" winning it all, then you could say that Tom Davis almost won a national title at Iowa, too. He didn't.

I won't argue that Indiana has a lot of tradition, but I don't think they are at blue blood status anymore. They *could* get to that level but you could say the same for a lot of programs that have a lot of in-state talent. 30 years since IU's last title, and they've rarely been a realistic threat to do it in the past 25 years or so.

As far as Alford goes, the IU job has been open a couple times since Knight was fired, and it hasn't happened. Now that Alford is at UCLA, I'm not sure I see it happening, but you never know I guess. Maybe it's time for Stevie Wonder to come back home. Depends on what makes the guy tick these days, and if Indiana wants him there. I don't know the answer to either question.

I actually meant Mike Davis in 02. I was typing to fast and had Crean on the mind. I will point out that Crean has had Indiana ranked #1 in the country in 3 separate seasons and that 2012-13 season they lost to Syracuse who made the final 4. Trust me Indiana is still a blue blood. UCLA is 23 years since a NC. I suppose they are also not a blue blood? I don't think you actually ever lose blue blood status. Once a nobel always a nobel kind of thing.

Alford's comments kind of sounded like Roy Williams' comments during the Final Four tourney before he abandoned KS for UNC. IMO, I don't care for either one of them and their smug opinion of themselves.

IMO, UCLA has lost it.

Is Minnesota or Nebraska still blue bloods in football? No, you have to keep winning.

Probably the most telling thing about Alford is that there isn't one fanbase he left behind that overwhelmingly supports him. Even at Missouri State, where he got the Bears to the Sweet 16 in 1999 (and they haven't been in the tournament since), it's about 50/50. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way during his short time in Springfield.
