Alford on Indiana Opening

Imagine if Tom Davis could have recruited!

I've been watching Hawkeye basketball since Lute Olson and TD was the best game day coach we've ever had. He got every ounce of talent out of every player.

I have to agree on Davis as the best game day coach. He also had some hard luck during his time with the Ray Thompson situation and Chris Street two guys that would have been superstars had they been able to finish their careers at Iowa.. It is also my opinion that the style of play that Davis had his teams playing was much more enjoyable to watch than the last few coaches we have had.

It is sad for me to say but I rarely watch college basketball anymore partly because the product at Iowa hasn't been the best but again it is my opinion that the entire product of college basketball is watered down. I also never watch the NBA. Allowing all these young kids into the league has ruined both products. As a whole, defense and shooting are terrible and I don't think you have the effort that you used to. Things have turned into so much one on one and isolation I just don't find it entertaining or enjoyable.

So basically you don't watch or like basketball? Got it.

First off shooting is not off, if you compare 3 point shooting now to 30 years ago, its much better. Whats different now is the way the game is played. Its a perimeter game whereby coaches are going for the 3pt shot, simple math tells you that if you take 5 shots beyond the arc and shoot 40% its worth 6pts, if you take 5 shots inside the arc you have to shoot 60% for the same result, plus missed 3s create long rebounds thus allowing a better opportunity for a second chance. I assume this is why you don't like the game. I have always felt for years if you take away the corner 3 and start it at the arc, the throwback open look pass against the zone is for a 2 then and not the wide open 3. This in theory makes a team look for a better pass to get an easier look,(ie cuts to the basket and back door plays) much like the game was played maybe when you liked it. The shot clock has created some changes to speed up the game which I think is a positive. Tinkering with the fouls has been happening at all levels, I think the jury is out. The isolation is why the NBA changed its defensive rules, but is the game worse or better now. I think the defense appears worse because of the blocking calls vs the seemingly " non existent now" defensive play of drawing a charge of yesteryear. I do know the athletes are much better. At the high school level, the majority of top teams are much more athletic than the sport has ever been, but it again it is a perimeter game, much to your dismay. The game will continue to evolve, Steph Curry has brought a few fans back but I do think the sport at the highest level is fairly flat, most professional sports have to tell their fans when to yell or stand up and like Iowa bury the crowd with pumped in noise to make it seem more exciting, I see less and less spontaneity from a crowd. .......In the end Iowa had a winning season with a new generation of players, I did not see this even from this group, hopefully, they now know what type of effort and work is requiring moving forward for self fulfillment and improvement to be competitive beyond the big ten.

scanning the Indiana boards has been interesting. Mixed bag on Alford...some still see him as the golden boy, some don't what him after the Pierce scandal. Many are convinced Billy Donovan will be the next coach.

Indiana really wasn't anything before Knight, and they haven't been that great since Knight left.

Knight made them a national brand, and then they frittered it away when they fired him.
They just fired the most successful (didn't say best) coach since Knight. Crean won 2 of the last 5 Big 10 championships.

As for Alford to Indiana... Indiana is loaded next year. But UCLA will always be able to draw talent. And with the Pac-12 style the players are more important than the coach IMO. It's all up tempo.
