#41 Bo Bower

Oh my you're going to pay dearly for those comments. :)
Funny when a bar room full of half drunk Iowa fans all see the same thing and come to the same conclusion, that
Bower shouldn't be on the field, then Icky quotes some high school coaches and D2 football coaches and we are all supposed to be in awe. By the way, I don't believe that there are that many D2 football programs in this state.....alot of D3. Anyway, Icky is an idiot.

I would agree with those coaches that Bower would be an excellent D3, maybe even D2 player.

Q. Late in the game when you had your second-team in, you kept Bo (Bower) in. Was that just to provide leadership or did you want to get him more work there?

KF: No, we didn’t want to get him more work just trying to make all the pieces fit where at least somebody could kind of have command of things and be confident we were going to get the right calls in. It sure didn’t look like it, but that was the purpose behind it.
I'm not looking to criticize Bower, but isn't Ferentz's comment a criticism?

What is the scoop on Mends? Hurt? Other?

Seems like a criticism of himself, if anything.

I doubt he meant it that way, but "It's the 7th game of the year and we didn't think any of our backups could make the calls" is not a ringing endorsement of the staff.

Decent point. Probably why most coaches don't like press conferences because we get to dissect everything a coach says, 2 days after he's said it, when he's just doling out coachspeak to muddle through it. However, like it or not, it is part of their job, some are just better at it than others. Ferentz seems like he'd rather be going through a root canal without novocaine.

I don't think the fans or message board posts forced Ferentz to play Stanzi or Beathard. If anyone did, it was his offensive coordinator (O'Keefe in the case of Stanzi and Davis in the case of Beathard). I think that is probably how it works.

I think Woody Hayes said it best: "When I start listening to the big donors and the fans, I'll be out of a job."

.....sure it was all a coincidence.

Because Mends and some other LB's are 'dinged' up you stupid f***.....Jesus Ch*** you people are IGNORANT!!! JUST SHUT THE EF UP UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!! Which is pretty much NEVER!!! If 'I' know anything about KF, LOLOLOLOLOLO.....YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT KF!!!!!!!!!!
whats the over/under on the time it takes for the ban hammer? You better dust off a different alt. Try to do a better job next time while you're at it.

I wonder that to since personal attacks aren't allowed. Maybe he needs to put the bottle down for an hour or so each day.
more like the sippy cup. His mom will take his internet away when she gets home from work. The babysitter must be busy with her boyfriend.

Bower is one of the hardest workers on the team, and probably a great teammate and knows the defense quite well, especially being in his 3rd year in the program. I'm glad he's a Hawk and he's a great young man.

THAT BEING SAID, it is not a criminal offense to suggest he does not have the physical tools to be a D1 LB like Ickehawk makes it out to be. Bower just isn't a good athlete. He is often out of position, and is not fast enough to make the plays we need him to make. It was no coincidence that when he was beaten out by Fisher last year that our LB play improved greatly (along with Jewell and Niemann of course). Bower was great at his role of a pass rusher and hustle guy, and I feel that's where he needs to stay. It's time to give Hockaday or Mends a shot at the starting role.

And before he comes back in this thread and goes off on another hissy fit, can we have a serious discussion about banning Icke? The personal attacks are getting out of hand.

Expressing one's opinion to extremely opinionated people can very difficult at times.

The linebackers are doing a good job again this year. The outlaw is 6th, and Bo Bower is 12th in the conference in tackles. It is good to have the experience on the field, they get the job done.

Tell me how that's not ironic that Mends/Jones did not play during the time second teamers were in there.....
It just dawned on me that maybe KF decided to leave #41 in because he needs more practice. Possible as KF's motivations are notoriously hard to read. It could also be that Bower "knows" the defense, even if he can't always execute it With that case maybe the decision was based on leadership qualities. Eye opening for sure either way.

Well said, you articulated my thoughts much better than I have. It is probably very hard for a coach to dismiss a young man who works his butt off in practice, but just doesn't have what it takes on the field.[/QUOTE]

Mends is not even on the two deep, and neither is the other kid (cannot recall his name) that has been listed in past weeks as back up LB's. Hockaday is listed as back up to two LB positions. Likely that injury is the culprit.

The heat was on in both cases. He finally gave in and in Stanzi's case resulted in 3 bowl wins and in Beathard's case resulted in a 17-2 regular season record and a Rose Bowl. That's the good thing about our coach. There is usually no more than 2 ruined seasons before he catches on to the obvious.

The number of tackles usually reflects the amount of time spent on defense and the number of plays run by the opposing offense. Not always a sign of how good a player is. I think a better indicator of talent is where the tackles are being made.

The one thing I have always found interesting is how we NEVER go away from the 4-3 with LBs covering WRs. This is usually a matchup nightmare. There are LBs that can do it but it is not that common. We have been getting better athletes but why not go to the Nickle more often?
Hell Chad Greenway is still play in the NFL but his inability to cover Anthony Gonzales from OSU on the radar for an NFL career.
I am curious more than trying to criticize. I do think LB is a weaker spot this year but not getting pressure on the QB hurts too.

Thank you for this post. Total tackle stats by itself is the most over-rated stat. Give me stats on TFLs, forced fumbles, sacks, ints, pass break ups, QB pressures, tackles made within 2 yards of the LOS, etc.

Running around jumping on piles 10 yards down the field or making a stop in your gap 5-6 yards down field gets a tackle stat but is likely an issue that you are not filling your gap around the LOS. Not reading the play quickly and subsequently being out of your gap or getting sealed off by a block is another stat NOT kept that also sheds light on an LBs play.

Good lord, what does it take to get banned from this board?! This kind of nonsense is beyond unnecessary..
