2023 NFL Predictions…

Hillis, Van Eegen, Craig James, Rocky Blier, Csonka, Riggins in last 50 years with 1000 yard seasons. Others?

Oh ya the Hawkeye demolisher.

Christian McCaffery if he could tie his shoes without getting hurt.

Mike Alstott? Not sure if he ever did it.

Walt Garrison never did it but he was one of my personal faves. On the college level a player that I've mentioned before, Michigan State's Blake Ezor, was one of my all time B1G favorites. Small, but durable and fast. Had the requisite late 1980's curly perm mullet. It wasn't quite "The Boz", but was impressive nonetheless.

While I don't see Moss being an NFL CB, I watched this year and wondered about DeJean (although I think he would be a better prospect at other positions). No question he's an NFL player, but didn't know what to think about him being a CB.

ESPN's 3rd ranked CB for the '24 draft: (they also have All as their #2 TE)

Cooper DeJean, Iowa:

The Iowa secondary was loaded in 2022, and DeJean led the group with five interceptions and seven pass breakups. He also had 67 tackles and scored three defensive touchdowns. DeJean is an all-around cornerback who plays the run as well as he plays opposing quarterbacks. At 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, he also has NFL size.

Here's a 2023 NFL prediction.

AJ Epenesa better step up his game.

Took a good look at him today. At the NFL level he loses contain on the edge, cant get off blocks, is frequently trailing the play, and has few moves to the QB.

The only time I noticed him being any factor was when he was able to bull rush.

Some of this was an issue in college. But I feel like he isn't taking advantage of his opportunity. Von Miller went down for the season in the Detroit Thanksgiving game, and Eppy hasn't stepped up.

Like Leonard Floyd of the Rams, Eppy had a decent rookie year but hasn't built off it. Bears finally cut their losses with Floyd, shipped him to the Rams, and Leonard not only had his best year in 2021, he won a ring.

With Miller set to come back, perhaps a change of scenery would do AJ some good as well.

I don't think NFL front offices care if a DB is white or black. The reason there hasn't been a white starting CB in the NFL for 20+ years is the same as the reason that a white male has not won a world championship in the 100m in over 40 years.

Why might Moss be different?

NFL teams employ more DBs than they used to.

We will see what Moss runs at combine/pro-day, but his speed is pretty elite. His best time as a senior in 110H (admittedly, wind-aided) would have placed him 8th at the B1G T&F championships last spring. And guys get faster from 18 to early-20s.

He is fundamentally sound, and is a good fit for slot/hybrid corner with his sure tackling.

He has some dawg in him. He is a lot like Kittle that way: goofy enough to have no fear, not so goofy that he becomes a distraction.

Pretty good recent track record for Iowa DBs (although not necessarily at CB).

Reminded me of when asked about WR Roger Carr, Bert Jones infamously stated "he's so fast, they'd better check to see if he's white or black."

Nobody batted an eye.

From The Athlete:

CB: Who are the prospects not enough people are talking about who will make a splash this week?
DB: Most are already familiar with Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez and Iowa defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness, but there should be more appreciation for their athletic traits after they test. In terms of a lesser-known prospect, Florida wide receiver Justin Shorter is a size/speed freak who should turn heads.

DeJean would fit in the Troy Polamalu mold. He could easily be flying around like that making open field tackles. Whether NFL GMs would take a chance is a whole 'nother deal.

Riley Moss as great as he is as a Hawkeye, is a college player. He's not even close to athletic enough to play in the NFL. CB is out, obviously, and he's not built enough to play safety.
We'll see soon enough.

You know, with Van Ness, LaPorta, Campbell and Moss all expected to be gone by end of day 2, it got me thinking who might be gone within the first 3 rounds next year?

Possibly DeJean, All, Lachey, and Craig? I think Castro might be a third day guy. Harris might be on some boards too. I'm glad Graves won't be eligible yet, because he might be the highest rated prospect on the roster by mid-season.

Even if he wows at the combine, where's he going to fit on an active roster? Moss is in that no man's land of size and let's face it, he's just not going to be a CB in the NFL. Troy Apke was WAY more physically gifted than Moss and even he couldn't hang on, and Moss doesn't have the size for safety. Riley's great as a Hawkeye where he's at but it doesn't translate to the bigs.

As you always say, you are wrong all the time and don't mind admitting it. But something really blinded you on this one. We were talking about an above-average length, high-productivity, All-American with elite athleticism. Among CBs at the combine, he was top 17% in height, top 28% in hand-size, top 20% in 40 yd time, top 4% in 10 yd time, top 13% in vertical, and top 15% in broad jump. NFL.com ranked him as the 6th most athletic CB in the draft.

I am sure a few teams had durability concerns, but this dude was always going to get drafted.
