Your take on Woodbury: Nice to have or must have?

Let me start by saying I hope Woodbury signs with the Hawks, period. However, I sense that some view his decision as make or break for Iowa hoops and I don't think that assertion is accurate or fair. We have Olaseni with Meyer on the way. Granted, Olaseni is raw and needs some reps, but Meyer, by all accounts, is solid. Big difference here is that Meyer plays in the ATL and Woodbury plays in Iowa.

My point here is not to downgrade Woodbury's play or his importance to the future of Iowa hoops. It is to point out that Woodbury is one guy and basketball is a team sport. Centers don't play the prominent role they used today with today's emphasis on playing fast and shooting 3's. I would hate for Woodbury to come here and take Gatens' spot as the Iowa kid that never sees the dance. There has to be a supporting cast because Woodbury is not going to be a Sullinger, Oden, Durant, etc. type player that dominates games IMO.

Mods how long before people using the hawkeyenation app for androids can post there own topic? It cant be that hard to add that feature to the app.
I have been patiently waiting for a update. Please make it happen before football starts. Pretty please? (puppy dog eyes) Thanks in advance!

Sure there is. For a coach to be successful he must have players who are skilled enough to be in the top half of their league.

Does this mean Woodbury is the only option? No.

But the odds with Woodbury would seem astronomically higher than some out of state kid with a similar level of ability.

I don't understand this statement. If they have similar ability what's the difference?

The odds of landing Woodbury, who is from the state of Iowa, are much higher for Fran than landing a similarly ranked/skilled prospect who is from out of state. Was it that hard to understand?

In-state, die-hard Hawk fan, vs. someone who grew up rooting for some other team, and perhaps has never even seen Iowa play before. Pretty simple.

This is pretty much my feeling...

While Woodbury may not really be a "must get" from the regard that there are always other recruits out there, this is Fran's best chance to date in landing a highly sought-after recruit.. Being in-state, and Woody supposedly a Hawkeye fan, if Fran can't seal the deal here, then what top recruits will he be able to get?

I have to differ with the OP and say that getting Woodbury IMO is a key piece to the rebuilding puzzle, and C is a position that we DO need help in. Getting Woodbury may also help us land further top recruits if it gets us back on the winning track sooner than later..

I was going off the quote below assuming that the player would already be part of the program. I was comparing a committed Woodbury vs. a committed out-of-sate similar player and didn't see a difference. Different discussion, obviously. Landing Woody should obviously be easier than an out of state guy of similar talent.

These guys all had very good supporting casts. It's not a criteria just for Woodbury.

I'll be stunned if Iowa doesn't land Woodbury assuming no new offers. I hear Bo Ryan is quite the salesman though.

I personally don't like to label a recruit as a must have... sets them and program up for failure. Very few recruits (top 3-5 in a given year?) have the ability to instantly turn a program around, the rest are pleasant surprises. If a kid doesn't work out then fans blame the coach or the kid was too lazy... That's really not fair to them or the program.

Must get, from a psychological perspective. An Iowa kid, 7 foot tall, moves well and has some moves. From a basketball perspective, nice get. Given some more pieces he may bring us some championships but he is only a part of the bigger picture. Outstanding point guards win you games and championships, that's what we really need.

Your post makes no sense. First you "sure there is."
Then you say, "is Woodbury the only option? no"
You can't have it both ways.
There is no such thing a must have.

You don't get it, really? There are must have's for coaches to be successful, but it isn't one specific player.

Correct. That's what a "must have" is. One specific player that a team must have. There is no such thing.
So we agree. :D
