Major B1G Upset Opens Door for Iowa

Yep.

Just accept it for what it is, and learn to take the frickin games as standalone, independent events for god's sake. Yeah I'd love to have beat ISU and Indiana, and I spent an entire weekend and $500 watching them lose. But here's the thing...we were NEVER going to win the conference or make the CFP anyway. Bring on Wisconsin and take it as a singular contest...which it is. Neither of these teams are going do dick in the post season anyway except fight to see who makes the Ron's A1 Muffler Bowl vs the American Chip Clip Manufacturer's Association Bowl.

Who gives a shit? And why?
I have pretty much landed on that flight deck. I still like bowl games simply because I can watch another Hawkeye game. And, the coaches like it for prep time, and the kids will enjoy any additions to the regular season. I don’t care if guys opt out. I ‘ll get a look at next year’s guys. If a game is meaningless to fans, I absolutely don’t care. I will take it as a Christmas gift.

I would counter that if there's a chance...how much money would you honestly risk on a bet for Iowa to win?

$0.50?

$50.00?

$500.00?

Anyone who thinks the Hawkeyes have a non zero chance at making the CFP is a complete idiot. Like Velcro shoes idiot.

How do people even spend time reading this crap?
I don't know, why do fans want to keep a coach who hasn't has only managed to tie for a Big Ten title going on over 22 years ago?

In my opinion Iowa has pretty much been head and shoulders above Indiana's football program since Hayden Fry came on board. Hell, Indiana could have kept their last head coach around for ever and made up rationalizations for doing so........... "Um were just not good enough so might as well just keep the guy around like Iowa does."

To be fair Indian's schedule last season played a big part, and I really expect the ground to open up and eventually swallow them soon enough, BUT.......... at least they were in the discussion longer that two games into the season. :(

Kirk has been a respectable coach and maintained Iowa as a respectable program. No one can say that's not true. Unfortunately, fans should at least be able to HOPE to play in a playoff. I Did say HOPE............. not EXPECT to. Got to be realistic. Moving forward that hope will not happen every time Kirk returns to start a new season.

Time to stand up and clap and give Kirk his accolades. Good job coach and thank you, however time for a new sheriff or captain to be in town. Kirk get's to ride his horse into the sunset with well over 100 million dollars in his saddle bags. He might want to stop by each of the Parker home's front porch and leave a chunk of it on their porches for their posterity to enjoy.

Wrong. Very wrong.

I can shit in my hand and hope it turns into a cheeseburger. That doesn’t mean there’s a chance of it happening, and if I do start hoping I get a cheeseburger all it’s going to lead to is misery and disappointment. The way the conferences and CFP are structured it’s like hoping I win the lottery. If the CFP and conference titles are what you hope for you may as well just switch teams, pal.

I just enjoy watching college football now with no stress and I feel sorry for fans who can’t do that. Because fans who can’t do that don’t are completely disconnected from reality.

False. A tie is not a win. It's a tie. If you win something it means you were better than someone else. If you tie someone it means you were exactly the same. No one wins.

Hence why they have 3 separate words...

Win, lose, tie.

If a tie was the same as a win they wouldn't have a separate word for it. Claiming ties as wins is a half notch above a participation trophy.
So nobody won the conference those years? B.S.

Correct. Nobody won the conference. Two teams tied for the conference lead. A win in that situation would require the two or more teams in question to play each other until a winner is established.

Since that didn't happen, there was a tie.

Were the Packers and Cowboys both winners the other day or both losers?

Or did they tie?

I don't know. To me, hope is the fun part of sports. I never hoped for a national title in football for Iowa. And after the Big Ten went away from divisions and expanded, I didn't think it was worth hoping for a Big Ten title either.

For me, part of the fun now is "staying alive" to eventually be in the playoff conversation by avoiding that third loss as long as possible. The season isn't over once they hit the third loss and each game can still be enjoyed on its own, but that super slim playoff chance enhances the fun.

Hawks are a razor's edge from being 4-1 or 5-0. If the Hawks were on one of those marks (I get they aren't but it wasn't beyond their capability), Gronowski hadn't gotten hurt, and with Penn State looking very beatable, we'd definitely all have some playoff buzz going right now.

My point for at least me personally, that would only add to the fun of the season right now, and not take anything away. (Even if and when the third loss hit). But I think we are kind of saying the same thing - don't let expectations take away from the enjoyment of the season.

Two different situations and you know it. One is a head to head single game, one the season conference title based on overall record.

When two teams finish with identical records and don't play head-to-head they are considered Co-Champions. Pull up a list of B1G football Champs. You don't see "No Champion" or "Vacant" for years where two teams tied.

Certainly not as satisfying, but still first place. Now there's a title game so that no longer happens.

This is strictly your opinion. I wish we could have had tie breaker games in the past but that’s not how it was set up. We never got a shot at Ohio State in ‘02. That’s not the teams fault. Could have ended up playing Miami instead of USC.
