Hey Fry, an IHSAA update!

All I can say is whatever CF had on that game was all exactly the same and they didn’t look like basketball shoes at all. Even the guys from our school that taped up their shoes, the tape wouldn’t stay on right.

Welp, private schools went 2-1 yesterday with 3 more playing today. IC Regina lost in OT yesterday. Had it 2nd and goal at the 6 inch line in OT. They have the #24 rated RB in the nation and didn't give it to him once in OT. Still don't get that one.

Part of me was hoping for the privates to go 6-0. Not that it would do any good, but the obvious would hopefully put some pressure on the State to do something (no way in hell it would, but still). Class A is the only class that had 2 publics schools in the finals, but that class really doesn't have many privates to begin with. Hasn't had a private champ since 1995.

This x100. Huge disparity between privates vs public.
Yeah, Regina screwed the pooch in overtime.

There are 32 private high schools in Iowa with sports out of 329 total schools. That's 9.7%.

Now go look at the percentage of private school state tournament qualifiers in softball, baseball, football, basketball (boys and girls), wrestling, and volleyball compared to public shool...

The free/reduced lunch thing works sorta okayish when talking just public schools, but it really didn't do much. Very few schools changed classifications and at the smaller school level it really didn't do anything.

What they do now is when assigning classes they go by enrollment, obviously. But since 2023, they determine the final enrollment number by subtracting 40% of the number of kids on reduced/free lunch.

So if a school has a baseline enrollment of 500 students and 35 of them are on reduced/free lunch, it goes like this: 500 - (35*.4) = 486. That doesn't do enough. Why should it be 40%? Who came up with that number? Tom and his criminal associates pulled it out of their asses. To me it should be 100%...or even 200% and the privateers should be forced to play in their own leagues. They can afford to travel long distance and if they can't...tough shit...maybe you should charge more for tuition then. Or get some of your board members to donate gas money.

It should be assumed that if a kid is on reduced/free lunch, his or her folks cannot afford to buy a student cleats or a baseball/softball glove. Let alone travel/club ball, camps, hotels, etc. I had kids playing for me who had to miss practices because they had to work, not because they wanted to work. It wasn't a choice for them. Make those private trust fund babies travel out of state to play bigger schools if they can't find competition here. See how they compete in Chicago.

Another private playing in the 3A champ game next: Bishop Heelan vs Nevada

And finally, in the evening 5A game, Dowling vs IC Liberty.

Yup, privates all over the place.

We should have an MMA league in high school.

How do we think a Dowling senior whose mom and dad pay to have their house cleaned and laundry folded would fare against some freshman from Ft. Dodge or Storm Lake who doesn't know if the electricity's gonna be on when he gets home?

That should be another thread: what non-sanctioned sports should IHSAA or IGHSAA sponsor?
