Even though Rutgers was a much harder fought game than UMass, Gronowske was surprisingly consistent in the passing game across both efforts.

UMass 16 of 24 66.7% 179 yrds 7.5 yrd/A 2 TD-pass 1 TD-run 0 Int 2 sack for 11 yrd-loss QB rating 156.8

Rutgers 12 of 18 66.7% 186 yrds 10.3 yrd/A 0 TD-pass 3 TD-run 0 int 2 sack for 7 yrd-loss QB rating 153.3

Gronowski Rushing in both games

UMass - 6 attempts for 12 yards 1 TD
Rutgers - 13 attempts for 55 yards 3 TD

This is going to get a lot harder against good defensive fronts, especially in the red zone. Time to practice those end zone passes.

Third down conversions didn't stack up so well for Iowa against Rutgers. Two of the chances were missed easy passes. Another was a sack.

Against Rutgers: 3 of 8 on third down; no fourth down tries.
Against UMass: 10 of 16 on third down; 1 of 2 on fourth.

Iowa had a good deal of success converting on second down, giving them less third downs.

All running backs seem to get enough momentum and push to fall forward most of the time. There were quite a few times it looked like no gain then out of nowhere they fall 3-4 yards
Nice to see Kamari Moulton back.
Rushing 68 yards on 14 tries, avg 4.9 yds/A - longest 11 - 1TD
3 Receptions 21 yards - longest 11

Jaziun Patterson did well early in the game, before going out with ankle injury. 6 for 37 yards - longest 12

Nation McNeil has 1 carry for 10 yards.

Terrell Washington 1 carry for 0 yards, 1 reception for 16 yards.

Kaden Wetjen got hammered for a 4 yard loss on his only carry. 2 Receptions for 17 and 3 yards.

Slightly better than falling forward.
Except for Washington, whose 6 total carries in the Iowa St. and Rutgers games resulted in a grand total of 8 yds. I hope he doesn't play another down at RB this year. That he started the Iowa St. game was a terrible coach's decision, and very unfortunate for the team.
Re Gron's stats: if you add in Phillips' drop of a perfect 30 yd pass v Rutgers + the 4 drops receivers had vs UMass, his stats would look even better. Now, if he can just eliminate short-arming wide open receivers!

Gronowski has been a HUGE weapon as a runner. He was sacked twice for 7 yards, so his actual rushing stats were 11 carries for 62 yards. He scored touchdowns on a QB power and a read option, and made both look easy.

I don't have any insight into why Washington was preferred for the Iowa State game. Was it something the coaches liked in practice. I also don't know who the good blockers are among the RBs.

Boy, it sure is nice winning the numbers game prior to each snap, on offense. What a nice bonus. Fans have been harboring for that for years.

I've started to realize that we don't need to throw for 250 yards to consider the passing game revitalized and rejuvenated. We just have to simply be able to move the chains. Ironically watching the Rutgers game I'm thinking to myself that we actually looked like a competent offense despite the fact that our passing yards still couldn't exceed the 200 yard mark. But honestly I don't care. Sure it's a couple games and Indiana scares the piss out of me next week, but if we can rely on the stable of RBs and Gronowski's legs we don't need to put up big yards. We just need to do it consistently well enough to move the chains and create the occasional opportunity down field which we hadn't done in years/games past.

Gron has gotten better every week. I will fight you if you disagree with that.

The fact that he had a very similar statistical and aesthetical against UMass at home and then against a much more talented team on the road in Rutgers is further evidence that he is growing. Was he perfect? God no, but he is getting better each week and that is kind of what KF said he expected.

Indiana's defense looked very good against Illinois, and if we hold the Hoosiers under 30 points, I will be surprised. So, if Gron continues on a linear progression and has a slightly better game this weekend, we probably lose by a TD or better. To win, Gron is going to need to make some plays and protect the ball.

200 yards passing and 2 TDs
60 yards rushing and 1 TD
No TOs
Win TOP 36/24

Hawks need long sustained drives with points to end them. Keep that offense off the field and tire the Hoosier D. Nice mix of pass and run. Win turnover battle and special teams. Gotta win line of scrimmage. Best challenge for us yet this year. All hands on deck, coaches, players need a good week of practice supported by an excellent game plan.

I don't think we win TOP by this margin but we will have to win it. It is, IMO, about as key of a statistic as there is for Iowa in this game. We've got to keep the ball away from that explosive offense.

Which is why we are a TD dog at home. Its a tall task. Indiana is also capable of scoring very quickly, so I think TOP has to be pretty lopsided in our favor to sneak a victory here. Gron has led the offense to some long scoring drives and the offensive line is coming together.

That said, on paper, Illinois is a better version of Iowa and they got boat raced. Its an uphill climb, but that's why they line up and play the games.

As the old ball coach once said, “It ain’t about touchdowns, it’s about first downs.”
