Frans future

He's been here 9 freaking years and his "body of work" is decidedly underwhelming, not to mention his embarrassingly childish behavior. Only an imbecile like Barta would consider Franny to be worth keeping around. Next coach in!

First you call Barta an imbecile and then you want Fran gone..... expecting Barta to NOT be an imbecile when hiring the next coach? What kind of logic is that?

My deepest sympathies go out to the Lickliter family. To get fired by Gary Barta has got to feel like a tragedy.:D:p
Don't forget that Gutless Gary had no intention of firing Lickliter until certain players walked into his office and told him "he goes or we do".
People incorrectly blame Lickliter for the demise of Iowa basketball. It's 100% on Gutless Gary Barta.

Lol. So, Fran can make the tournament every year, get blown out by 20 points every year, never win a tournament game again....and he'll be the Iowa coach for the rest of his life? Sounds about right for a Gutless Gary contract.

Two very good points. Sure we might lose a little bit of offense if Cook goes, but Iowa’s offense will still be very good next year. Personally I’m hoping Nunge is a huge improvement on defense if Cook does go.

Garza is simply a liability on defense I don’t think that’s going to change too much, but hopefully he can get a little better as you say.

Your Nunge statement makes good sense. He was second on the team in blocked shots and fifth on the team in rebounding while playing only 15 minutes a game as a freshman. And his outside shooting (read "outside 8 feet") is definitely an improvement over Cook's.

LOL. Nice spin. Fran can't recruit talent, or athletic players, and Fran can't coach, period. 9 years here, and what has he done? Nothing. Our athletic director is a moron.

And yet you and many other [negative] posters here on this board want said moron to hire the next basketball coach.

KF's teams go on the road an it isn't a shit show? Do you watch Iowa Football? Purdue game? PSU game? thats just this year. Both programs are irrelevant, period. KF has been here 20 years, Fran 9 years. Look at where both programs are. Average conference records. Neither coach would have a job at any other Power 5 school.

I'd hardly call #12 Penn St irrelevant.

Iowa has 15 wins against teams ranked 136 and above in the RPI and fortunately hit 3 buzzer beaters Against the bottom teams in the Big Ten. Iowa has only 3 quality wins all season and up until this weekend had only 2 until Oregon turned it around. Iowa also I think has the worst SOS of any the Big Ten Teams.

Close. Here are the stats from CBS Sports on SOS:
10 Penn St
12 Maryland
17 Purdue
20 Mich St
23 Wisconsin
29 Minnesota
37 Nebraska
40 Michigan
45 Ohio St
49 Indiana
50 Illinois
73 Iowa
74 Rutgers
86 Northwestern

If Cook stays and can't make the NBA early or at all, then Fran's recruiting reputation is cinders. Every coach that we go against will mention to a prospective recruit that Fran couldn't develop a guy like Cook. That's not a good look.

If you think recruiters run down other programs instead of talking about their own successes, you really don't understand recruiting. A recruit would be thinking "Should I go to school A or school B?" Each one will talk about their past successes and their vision of what they see the recruit doing. Most recruiters don't use the "well don't go to xxx because they couldn't do yyy" because EVERY school has recruits who have seen success and seen failure.

I'd love to know how much the school stands to make from being in the dance for even just the one game... Does it cover Frans cushy bonus and then some or would he need to win 2 games and get to the sweet 16 to do that?

We are going to be stuck with this guy for a long time. Why would he want to leave when he gets a bonus for being mediocre and a contract with such a huge buyout?
The only way he leaves is if the fans harass he and his kids so badly that he just can't take it anymore. I'm not advocating that for the record. People who do that are the worst.

Absolutely agree that he wasn't a 3. I'm just not sure he's an upgrade or the answer at the 4 - post TC.

He was second on the team in blocks (to a player who played 8 more minutes per game than him) and 5th on the team in rebounding (highest non-starter) as a freshman. His shot is MUCH better than Cook's. With this year off, he's probably put on some needed bulk/strength. I see him being more effective than Cook, especially once he gets used to the physicality of the B1G.

Marble averaged 5 points on a terrible team as a freshman, ended as a 1st Team All B1G player
He also averaged a crap ton more minutes by his senior year and yes he should've improved that's my point I just named more regressers than you named progressers....is that the way it's supposed to go 1 positive for every 4 players through the system? I'll even add 1 more...there's been little if any improvement in Kreiner's game since his sophomore year and not counting on anything more for his senior stanza!

AW improved. Let me say Fran and Staff seem not to'focus' at all times. Also NOT getting off-season Defensive specialist is Glaring example of non-focusing. But Win next things will be semi-ok. Go Hawks...Win!
Agree

I would have to go back and see if he really improved from his Jr to Sr season. He most certainly did from his Freshman year no doubt. It's also true that as a team we have NOT improved one lick as a defensive unit in the past 3 seasons.

I've never stated that I think Barta should be allowed to stay.

There were about 6,000-8,000 empty seats a night telling Barta the same thing. But yes, another mass transfer would have been a virtual death penalty. Lick may have had a chance with a nucleus of Jeff Peterson, Jake Kelly, Jermain Davis and Anthony Tucker. All he needed were a couple big men to replace Cyrus Tate. But he lost them all and by the end of the third season we looked like Indiana at the beginning of the the Tom Crean era.
