State Tourney: Updates

Do you know how his defense is?
He can move his feet laterally, pretty well. He's long enough to alter shots. I'd put his perimeter defense above average for his height. He can't keep Weiskamp from getting to the rim. He's not gonna be able to defend BIG players his height, unless he gets stronger. If he puts on 30 lbs by the time his FR season starts, he'll be a welcomed addition. Otherwise, he'll struggle to defend.

Wuut! That's messed up. That kid should be shooting that shot at a 60% clip by the end of the season. Not guard the PG or stop the ball? Weird.
I'm not exaggerating at all. It was almost disrespectful. Ask anyone else if I'm kidding. West sagged back and basically put 3 defenders on Weiskamp. And they still couldn't stop him from scoring 30.

He can get some blocks here and there, but overall his defense isn't very polished. He just needs to watch his pop's championship defense video a few more times.
In all seriousness though, anytime PMac gets into the lane against these small high school kids, he should be knocking down 10 footers left and right, but he either doesn't seem able to do it or is just too passive. Not sure.

That's an NBA player there, possibly a first round pick, IMO with college experience. Would be a rare 1st round pick for Iowa. Exciting!

Well, there is a downside also with having to put that much weight on. It can slow quickness down and change one's game.

Patrick's got a nice handle for a kid his size. He'll be a handful when he gets stronger.

Foster might end up being the kid you through a Range Rover at, or at least that's how it seems you land 1 and dones.
When that time comes there probably won't be as many one and dones. Sounds like they wanna flip the rules back to not having to go to school at all. The NBA only made that rule because they wanted to protect themselves. They try saying it's to protect the kid but they couldn't care less about them. They just can't help themselves when it comes to drafting one if there's 'potential' and 'hype' around them. They wanted to have less risk involved in drafting a bust is all. Well there's always going to be that regardless. Not much difference between 18 and 19 yr old kids to be honest...

Looking at how wiry he is and what's probably his 4% BMI...I think he'll be OK with adding the weight. He looks similar to Uthoff, honestly. Some kids just take longer to add muscle. Barring him getting his shooting form corrected and getting his 3pt % up to 40%...he's going to need to add the muscle. Otherwise, he'll be too easy to defend at the D-1 level. He handles the ball and passes the ball at a really high level. That helps. I see why he's rated highly. he's got a lot of high skill sets to his game.

Oh no, he definitely needs to as he has no choice. Right now, he's just growing at such a fast pace, the weight can't keep pace with the height. Just saying that in doing so, may see some quickness (acceleration or lat quickness) slow down a bit while weight is being put on. But again, he has to.

You're 100% right. Especially the almost disrespectful part. You think they would at least put a pity defender in his general area. They were down 10 with under a minute left (time to start jacking shots up right) but their point guard got the ball at the 3 point line wide open, stands there for about 5 seconds , the crowd finally yells to shoot it, so he dribbles up to the free throw line and throws up a brick. Think about how wide open you have to be to stand there for 5 seconds, then dribble in 8 feet to shoot a wide open shot. Words can't describe how bad it was.

Lol. I was yelling "Bust that!" at my laptop, every time he was standing there wide open. It was painful.

I would say Marble was a better passer and Jok probably more of an elite shooter, but Joe will end up the better player.

My current player comparison to Joe would be Sam Hauser at Marquette. Interestingly enough, Joe plays AAU with his brother Joey. Sam is listed at 6’7/225 and averaged 15/6 for MU this year. I doubt he’s actually 225. He’s shooting the 3 ball at over 50% right now. Sam isn’t an amazing athlete but he’s solid in that regard and he uses his size and strength to create his own.

Two other comparable players would be Charles Matthews at Michigan and Kevin Heurter at Maryland.

If you're just going off assist numbers to judge his passing skills, you should rethink it. One play last night, he was facing his normal triple team at the 3 point line and threw a perfect pass to his 6'6" teammate for a wide open layup. Amazingly, he missed it. Even more amazing was Weiskamp (who had 3 people between him and the free throw line) got the rebound putback. It was an amazing bang bang play.

It made me think 2 things. One was how in the hell did he get through those guys that quick for the rebound. And two was what the hell made him crash the boards so hard when his teammate was shooting a 99% shot. It was a combination of max effort and unreal athleticism on the putback. Point being if you have 4 guys around you that have zero ability to score, you aren't getting many assists.

It was like Space Jams. Weiskamp is Jordan and the rest of his team is the Looney toons.

I would have made 5 3s that game if I was him. It maybe would have taken 15 shots, but I would have gotten up that many.
No doubt! I'd have dropped 15+ pts on West, if I was playing in that kids place and I'm 47. I'll knock down that 15 footer at a 70% clip, left that wide open. 2 dribbles...splash. 2 dribbles...splash.
Of course, I'd need cortisone shots in each knee before the game started. :(

I don’t have the slightest clue what Joe’s assist numbers are, I'm just going off film I’ve seen. At 6’6 Marble had a lot of PG skills and was a good passer, I’m not sure if Joe has that yet, but maybe he does.

Joe's high school stats (not including last night's game, most likely.
FG - 255 of 459 for 55.6%
3 pt FG - 60 of 171 for 35%
FT - 204 of 242 for 84.3%
774 total points for 33.7 ppg
36 assists
29 steals
30 blocks
54 turnovers
93 ORB and 217 DRBs for a total of 310 rebounds or 13.5 rebounds per game.
I wouldn't even consider Joe's assist/turnover ratio as he basically had nobody to pass to. He easily outscored the rest of his team combined.

Is the 60 of 171 from 3 accurate? I thought he was a better shooter than that.

Think of the shots he has to shoot. You saw the defense he played against last night. His only shots were highly contested ones. I've heard he's automatic when open. That could very well be an exaggeration and the truth is somewhere in the middle.
