Fran vs Hoiberg

When Hoiberg was hired I thought it was a curious hire and probably not a good one. Wrong. He may be on the verge of creating a very good program at Iowa state. And I have to admit he is a class act. When Fran was hired I thought it might be OK. I think the jury is out on Fran. Clearly a better choice than Lick but has yet to recruit the athletic types that can make his style of play work. This year may be make or break.

I have to admit my evaluations of hires hasnt been the best. I thought Alford was a great hire. NOT! I thought Ferentz was a strange choice and no matter what happens down the road he has done some good things at a tough place to succeed.

If Fran doesnt get over the hump in recruiting and Ferentz doesnt make a comeback next year I may get a chance to evaluate new coaches but also a new athletic Director.

If you think the jury is still out on Fran then you're attempting to flame. If you think this is a make or break year and aren't flaming then you don't know much about college basketball. A lot is going to have to go wrong for this not to be a make year...NCAA appearance. I can't envision a break scenario. You aren't a longtime Clone fan by chance?

Fran has officially turned one of the worst major conference programs into a top 25 team. Does that mean much? Sure. Can they get to somewhere better? We shall see. I don't really give a **** about comparing him to others.

The Hoiberg hire made complete sense on basically every level except for head coaching experience. He is Ames' favorite son, star player at ISU, played in the NBA and was a connection to Johnny Orr. It might not have worked but the rationale was clearly there when they made the hire and he definitely was a hit amongst ISU fans as soon as he accepted.

I don't think this is a "make or break" year by any means but there is probably some truth in saying that it's a very pivotal year.

It's year 4 of Fran, there has been some hand wringing amongst the fans about recruiting difficulties. If Fran makes the NCAA tournament and wins a game or 2 then the fan base is wildly satisfied. If Iowa eeks out a 10-8 or a 9-9 finish and is on the bubble then think some might question the continued upward trajectory.

I think Fran easily takes the team to the tournament and the fan base is wildly satisfied. But there is some merit to saying this is a pivotal season.

this thread is basically bullcrap.

if fran goes 9-9,10-8, he's still fine.

I think we learned our lesson the last time we got rid of a steady 9-9 coach.

What the hell....why do we go through this every damn year? Frankly, It's a mute point....these coaches aren't playing the game.....I just like it when Fran get's ******.....

I might be wrong, but I think the lack of outside shooting has been more of an issue than the athleticism. I think the athleticism hasn't hurt us a bit since Fran's been here and definitely think you're underestimating this teams athleticism.

Look at the long athletic guys Fran has recruited - White, Woody, Gabe, Mel, Uthoff...throw Marble in because he had to "re-recruit" him. OP is wrong, these long armed players able to get up and down the court are exactly what we need to play his style. They create havoc for opponents (see Uthoff's 7'1 wingspan!). The only thing he hasn't been able to recruit yet is a stud player. But overall has increased the athleticism on this roster by leaps and bounds over where it was. My hope is we'll get that special player after a good year this year.

That might be the worst rational in hiring a coach I've ever heard. It appears Fred is a good basketball coach, but those are simply stupid reasons to hire a coach.

He may not be that person yet but I think Jok could turn into that star player. I have been harsh on him so far as I think he has been forcing a bunch of shots, but he has done some great things as well.

Fred hasn't really recruited a star player either who wasn't a transfer. Niang was comparable to White or Basabe his freshman year. If Naz Long can keep playing the way he started the season he could be Freddy's first star player that he recruited out of high school. If he doesn't, it looks like Rashad Vaughn could easily be the first true star.

He did some great things on both ends of the court last night. Showed some athleticism and quickness that people are still wondering if he can recover.

Fran is already over the hump in recruiting.

haha....oh this is serious? yikes.

I think most non-Iowa fans and most non-ISU fans would say that Hoiberg has down the better job up to this point.
Both came in the same year to horrible situations. Results after 3 years are 2 NCAA tourneys and 2 wins for Hoiberg and 1 NIT tourney for Fran.

Who has the better progam going forward remains to be seen.

.

Fred has had more success, faster than Fran, that isn't even debatable. Fred has ISU sitting with the program set up for the next few years, as he has some good young players and Custer, Nadar & McKay to replace Ejim and Kane next year. If he gets Vaughn, watch out, as he is a one and done player.

Fran also has Iowa in a very good spot. The team has to perform this year though, and they will be set up nicely for a couple years after that with White, Gesell, Woody, Uthoff, and Jok. Then he has to have another (Gesell/Woody) type class recruiting wise in 2015. If he gets to the NCAA and gets that good '15 recruiting class, Iowa will be looking solid for years to come as well.

I think it is great having 2 strong BB programs at the same time. Plenty of BB players to go around to support 2 Iowa and ISU being good at the same time.

are we seriously going to go thru this **** for the next month? ******* ISU trolls all over the place? shoot me in the head.
