How Iowa lost Melvin Gordon

With such few carries I'm not convinced that he is durable enough. Weisman has proven that he can handle 30 or more carries per game. 15 carries per game is far too few for an Iowa running back. This is how Iowa leads the Big 10, and is number 5 nationally in time of possession. Weisman is simply a better fit in the Iowa system than a scat back.

Cmon now fella. I love the Mossad as much as anyone and agree he's a beast. But I doubt even MW himself would say he's the better back.

He is a good fit at Iowa. I never saw the other guy play in a college game so it would be hard for me to say that a 15 carry per game guy would be better at Iowa if I never saw him.

Gordon isn't being used as a workhorse at Wisconsin, just like he wouldn't be here.

Yeah, Gordon has a lot fewer carries. He also eats up bigger chunks of yards and scores more touchdowns. I'll take a 40-yard touchdown over using 6 plays to cover the same distance. Having Gordon in this offense would make it damn deadly; the guy has averaged 10.8 ypc since the start of the 2012 season, with 1,245 yards and 10 scores on just 115 carries. Weisman, as things stand right now, would have 564 yards with that same carry total.

I'm sorry, but anyone seriously making the argument that Weisman is better than Gordon is a straight-up fool.

No, the real reason is that he committed to Iowa after the Orange Bowl season, and then decommitted to Wisconsin after Iowa stunk it up the next year and Wisc went to the Rose Bowl. If Iowa would have won 2 more games that season (including the fake punk game w/Wisconsin), MG would still be a Hawk.

Fred Russell averaged 18 carries per game in 2002, when he was splitting time with Jermelle Lewis (who averaged about 10 carries a game). It's not like Iowa has never had success without a 25+ carry back. If a guy has big play potential, which Russell had and Gordon most certainly has, it's hardly a bad thing to spread the wealth a little and not have a guy shouldering the bulk of the load.

It will be interesting to see who holds up over the course of a full season. Gordon has a more slender build and he generally runs pretty high because he is more of a sprinter. Yet, Weisman you would think would be more durable, but he will have a hell of lot more carries than Gordon. Gordon might be the best athlete in the Big Ten so definetly would have been nice to have him though.

Not so sure about this. We have not yet played a real physical team this year. Let's wait and see how he holds up in conference play. Didn't Weisman miss some games last year?

"The big factor was, when he committed to Iowa, Iowa stopped recruiting him," Kennedy said, "and Wisconsin put it into overdrive."

This just shows how self-centered the recruited athletes and their parents are. You don't just have to kiss their arses to get them to agree to come to your school, you have to keep kisses their arses after they make the promise.

Yeah, but that's the name of the game. You either play ball and keep pace, or you don't and fall behind.

Isn't Gordon too much of a 'dynamic' runner to play at Iowa? IMO, he likes to run on the edges and seems to avoid contact. IMO, he's a Reggie Bush type of runner. I know this may sound like some competing college's recruiting pitch for Gordon's talents, but just where would Gordon have fit in Iowa's offense?

to be honest though, Wisconsin has been much like Iowa in how they like to run the power running game. Wisky however, is willing to mold their O to fit the strengths of Gordon. not sure Iowa would be willing to do the same. guess we'll never know, but i think Canzeri is much more of a Gordon than a Weisman, but they use him just like they do with Weisman.

Ferentz (er, KOK) wanted Brandon Wegher to move to receiver - the season following the O Bowl.

Does he not tip in restaurants because they quit asking him what he wants to eat after he orders?

Just add him to the list of recruits that flipped to other schools. There is one or two a year. It does sting but as a fan what can you do?

Then I guess we can stop criticizing the SEC and their recruiting tactics? You either play ball, or you fall behind.
